Doesn't work for me.

JDK 11.0.2
NetBeans 11.0
Debian "buster" Linux

Sample project: https://gitlab.com/Cenbe/fxmaven

symptoms: Ignores "suspend=y" and "jpda.address" in jdwp settings,
breakpoints not hit. Trying to attach debugger at address shown in
debugger output results in a hang requiring NetBeans restart.

I remember a mailing list discussion back in "the old days" stating that
the color scheme had to do with the likelihood of color blindness (which
is higher than one might think, especially among males).

will be the PMC chair of NetBeans upon our graduation to a top-level

Yes, the question was whether it would be unseemly to have an Oracle
employee as PMC chair. I think there's clear agreement that that's not
the case.

Yes, that's correct.

And speaking of pedantism :) how long should a vote like this stay open?
It's my first time proposing a vote. Is it 72 hours? Then what happens,
must we notify mentors somehow, or is posting of the vote results
enough? Should I make a voting results post with count of the votes (and
must only IPMC votes be counted, or all of them)?

javadoc URL

2019-02-21 Thread Glenn Holmer
When I ctrl-space to get Javadoc and click "Show documentation in
external web browser" from the popup, the URL is wrong. For example, for
the Position class, the URL it tries to use is:

https://download.java.net/java/GA/jdk12/docs/api/javax/swing/text/Position.html

whereas the correct URL is:

https://download.java.net/java/GA/jdk12/docs/api/java.desktop/javax/swing/text/Position.html

(note tne module name).

Is this a known issue? I'm seeing it with both JDK11 and JDK12.

I wasn't even aware that anyone had written a test spec for this (I
added an empty placeholder for it during the last NetCAT, as I recall).
Since that's part of a larger spec and someone is testing a different
part, it's closed for edits.

The sections still being tested are IDE profiling and Heapwalker, both
by Michal Owsiak. Michal, can you complete these tests to open the spec
for John's edits?

NETBEANS-1359

2018-10-12 Thread Glenn Holmer
I filed issue 1359 (self-profiling hangs when stopped under JDK 11):

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-1359

and I wonder if someone could help me figure it out. I traced it by
running NetBeans under the debugger:

SelfSamplerAction.actionPerformed() creates an
org.netbeans.modules.sampler.InternalSampler when self-profiling is
started, which creates a SamplesOutputStream.

When self-profiling is stopped, Sampler.stop() gets called (superclass
method), which calls SamplesOutputStream.close(). This calls
writeToStream() on each sample, which fails as soon as toCompositeData()
is called (line 178 in SamplesOutputStream).

Sampler.java doesn't catch the resulting exception (line 239), so the
snapshot save hangs.

Some googling brought me to this issue, which has a similar stacktrace:

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-882

but I'm over my head at this point. Does anyone understand what's going
on with toCompositeData()?

1359 has a repro case, does that help?

[profiler] Profile the IDE

2018-10-05 Thread Glenn Holmer
Does anybody know how to get this to work? It looks like you're supposed
to be able to click on the "Profile the IDE" button (in the Performance
toolbar), do some work in the IDE, then click it again to "Stop IDE
Profiling and Take a Snapshot".

But what I'm seeing is a "Saving snapshot" progress bar in the NetBeans
status area on the bottom that never goes anywhere and has its "show
output" and "Cancel" context items greyed out.

If that's supposed to work, I'll just file an issue. Or is that not the
way to use it...?

Shall we do a New and Noteworthy page for NetBeans 10? And btw, is it
NetBeans 10 or NetBeans 10.0?

Invitation to join the Apache NetBeans 10 Community Acceptance Testing program

2018-09-28 Thread Glenn Holmer
Hello NetBeans users,

We hope to release NetBeans 10 in November:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/NETBEANS/Apache+NetBeans+10

and that means... it's NetCAT time!

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/NETBEANS/NetCAT+10.0+Schedule

Anyone to would like to help test the next release is invited to join
the NetCAT program for our next release. Instructions for how to join
can be found here:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/NETBEANS/NetCAT+10.0+Participants

and if you experience any difficulties joining us, you can post on the
NetCAT mailing list for help. Everyone should join a "tribe", which
focuses on testing a specific part of NetBeans, using test
specifications that can be found here:

http://netbeans-vm.apache.org/synergy/client/app/#/specifications

We'll be adding test runs for the next release shortly. Please have a
look at the test specs as soon as you join, as an important part of
testing is keeping these specifications up to date.

We look forward to seeing lots of participation in NetCAT again. Please
join us to help make this the best NetBeans release ever!

Looks good! Let's make sure we spend enough effort on updating the test
specs. I think it would be helpful if active developers had a look at
them too (even if they're not taking part in NetCAT), so we can make
sure that they reflect NetBeans' current functionality.

I see the Travis build failed because
"ide/db.drivers/external/postgresql-42.2.5-license.txt contains a
license body which does not match that in
nbbuild/licenses/BSD-postgresql". Looks like I missed something in
VerifyLibsAndLicenses.java.

What is the correct way to fix this? I copied the license straight from
the Postgres JDBC driver site. Must the one in nbbuild be replaced as
well? What is the reason for having another copy there, is it to do with
Rat?

When it's fixed, what's the proper way to correct the PR? Delete it and
create a new one?

downloaded binaries questions

2018-09-23 Thread Glenn Holmer
Some questions about downloading external binaries at build time:

1) Where is the format of the external/*-license.txt file documented
(e.g. ide/db.drivers/external/postgresql-9.4.1209-license.txt)?

2) Do I understand correctly that whether a binary is downloaded from
Maven or from hg.netbeans.org (Ant property "binaries.server") depends
on whether the entry in external/binaries-list can be parsed as a Maven
coordinate by org.netbeans.nbbuild.extlibs.DownloadBinaries.java?

In practice, it is (or should be) a discussion within the tribe to see
which issues should be *proposed* as blockers. Tribe leaders are mainly
responsible for dividing up the work of going through the test specs and
making sure tribe members are on schedule.

I agree with what you're saying here; we're in a new world now. The PMC
is the body that must make decisions about whether to release; NetCAT
should be seen as an advisory body. Just as in the past, when NetCAT
reports a bug, committers may clarify or override the severity.

As a long-time NetCAT team member, I'm certainly not trying to minimize
its importance. If NetBeans users feel strongly enough to participate in
NetCAT (it's a lot of work to go through those test specs!) and make a
point about an issue, it should be taken very seriously, and the role of
NetCAT in the release process should be clearly defined.

I'd like to work on this. I'll have lots of questions, but I want to
learn the NetBeans internals. I'm studying "NetBeans Platform for
Beginners" and the API docs on netbeans.org.

I had a look at NETBEANS-170 (referenced by 870):

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-170

If Postgres is the last driver still bundled with NetBeans, are the
above steps even worth the effort?

First of all, it's "gene...@incubator.apache.org", yes?

I'm confused by what's going on here. Have the mentors voted against the
release, or have not enough mentors voted in favor? Is there consensus
among them on what is keeping us from getting a positive result?

And why is there so much shilly-shallying about over build systems here
when we have bigger fish to fry? How can the average non-committer help
to get a release out the door?

Hate 'em. The NetBeans splash images have always been artful and
inventive. Don't go with the "modern" "flat" look just because designers
are telling us it's fashionable. We aren't using 4.77MHz PCs any more,
it's OK to use a nice-looking image.
