Hi all,

After a discussion amongst the Apache NetBeans community on the dev mailing
list[1], voting on a PMC chair[2], checking the podling status page[3], and
working through the maturity model[4], I would like to call a vote for
Apache NetBeans graduating to a top level project.

Apache NetBeans entered the incubator on October 1, 2016. Since then, we
have announced 2 releases, nominated several new committers, participated
in conferences and events, have 99 contributors with 2,423 commits, and --
most importantly -- have grown and diversified our community. Apache
NetBeans is a healthy project that is already acting like an Apache top
level project, so we should take the next step.

If we agree that we should graduate to a top level project, the next step
will be to draft a Resolution for the PPMC and IPMC to vote upon.

Please take a minute to vote on whether or not Apache NetBeans should
graduate to a Top Level Project by responding with one of the following:

[ ] +1 Apache NetBeans should graduate.
[ ] +0 No opinion
[ ] -1 Apache NetBeans should not graduate (please provide the reason)

The VOTE is open for a minimum of 72 hours. Per Apache guidelines[5] I will
also be notifying the incubator mailing list that a community vote is under
way.

Thanks,

Geertjan
on behalf of the Apache NetBeans PPMC

different FileChooser behavior with JDK 11.0.1 on Windows than with 11.0.0

2018-10-17 Thread Jens Hofschröer

Hi

I wanted to test the current JDK 11.0.1 in our RCP application and found
a wired behavior when I tried to open a new project. I got spammed with
error messages that various (Windows-)links on my Desktop are no longer
valid and if I want to remove them.

These messages are OS-messages and occur normally when you try to open
an file or application via a .lnk file and the destination does no
longer exist. A valid message for an invalid file. But these messages
only occur if you actively click on these abandoned shortcuts, never
when you just view them in a directory listing.

/!\ This behavior is specific to the NetBeans FileChooser and the 11.0.1
release. There is no regression in plain Swing applications and the
default JFileChooser. There were no regressions with the JDK11+23 build
of OpenJDK.

I tried OpenJDK and OracleJDK since Azul and AdoptJDK do not provide a
recent build.

Java: 11.0.1; OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM 11.0.1+13
Java: 11.0.1; Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM 11.0.1+13-LTS

Also this is not specific to NB10. I tried NB8.2, NB9 and NB10 together
with our RCP based on NB8.2 and NB9

System: Windows 7 Version 6.1 läuft auf amd64; Cp1252; de_DE

I don't know where to start digging the problem. What does the NetBeans
FileChooser different than the default Java one? What change was done to
Java? I could not find a hint on this. Am I the only one with this problem?

Greetings
Jens

No, only Apache Releases (and the corresponding convenience binaries)
can be distributed from apache.org, if non-Apache releases need to
stay up a different solution will be required.

An idea: Upload the old artefacts as releases to the history github repo
by Emilian. So the "old" sources and the "old" releases are on one place

filenames are part of the API so we can't change them, but I think we

Custom Rumtime Image for RCP Applications

Hi

I am testing a little bit with Custom Runtime Images for our RCP
Application and want to share my experiences. Our custom image is

created by the following Ant snippet.

${gtbjdk.home} is the used JDK home directory and ${gtbjdk.dir} is the
destination folder name.

  java.desktop,
  java.instrument,
  java.logging,
  java.naming,
  jdk.localedata,
  jdk.management,
  jdk.pack,
  jdk.jdwp.agent,

  en,
  de,
  pt-BR,

failonerror="true" if:set="dojlink">

Created JRE in
${temp.dir.rest}/${gtbjdk.dir}

The tasks are executed as dependecy of the "build-zip" target and after
"build-launchers". On Success the generated JRE-Path is set directly in
our app.conf:

property="gtbjre.exist"/>

The generated Runtime Image is about 64 MB from an Oracle JDK 9.0.4 (win64)

Do you have an email address or website? What is the name of the plugin?

Re: Netbeans cache and configurations

2018-03-21 Thread Jens Hofschröer

Am 21.03.2018 um 03:05 schrieb cowwoc:
Windows has a concept of "global" installs vs "user specific" installs.
The former goes into "c:\program files". The latter goes into
c:\users\xxx\AppData.

Netbeans is kind of odd in that it installs into the global location,
but uses user-specific directories for data. It probably makes sense to
ask users whether they want global vs user-specific installs and then
keep the data in each respective location (instead of crossing the wires).
This does not work for us. At work we are not allowed to install any
user-specific Applications, so the IDE is installed into the "global"
"Program Files" Folder. But the user has no right to write at that
localtion, so every user-specific data has to be written into a folder
where the user has write access.

As Emilian pointed out at [1] is an explanation of why these folders are
where these folders are today. And this is exactly what we need at work,
exept, that we start with an explicit --userdir outside the userprofile.
We use "roaming profiles" where the "%LOCALAPPDATA%" is excluded from
sync so we start with a fresh cache on every login.

But I would like to see the "Cache Control"-Feature build in somehow
into the IDE.

We should create a vote thread here, or on users.  This is consistent with
normal apache votes.  All it needs is a link to the confluence page to show
the images and their option numbers.

It avoids everyone having to have edit writes on the confluence just for a
vote.
