Re: [Blog Draft] Update about Apache Asia Road Show Beijing 2012 @Dec 13

2012-12-16 Thread Shenfeng Liu
Hi, all,
I just want to give you an update that we had a successful Apache
OpenOffice session last Thursday (Dec 13) on Apache Asia Road Show 2012
Beijing.
Thanks to Peter, Tao and Da Li for the speech! The topics covered AOO
general introduction, contributions from local volunteers, how to join
community and make contribution, and building social/cloud solutions by
integrating with AOO. We also distributed AOO promotion materials that
prepared by Da Li.
We got more than 100 audience participated in the OpenOffice session
14:00-15:00. Most of them are technical people from different companies and
universities. Per my check during my speech, only <20 had used OpenOffice
before. So it is really a good promotion of our product and community.

We are refining the presentations and will publish them later.

  Thanks!

IAccessible2 bridge related changes were just delivered into cws "ia2". The

Does anyone interest in it? Any suggestions or comments are welcome.

We need only do (1) and I would do it within the httpd config like our existing
redirects. Regardless if there are both file1.htm and file1.html in the source,
one of these must be removed from the source svn.

See https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-5668 for this request along
with a set to avoid an incubator redirect for certain links.

We do not need to do (2) because we already are making this change in the
staging and publish. You see no diffs for the old htm files because they are
not changed. I do see diffs in the html versions of the pages. Even with the
redirect in place, it still makes sense to edit the pages to use *.html and not
*.htm in links.

I think it is ok to force the pages to be *.html. We should have some
consistency. Maybe soon it will be time to start switching openoffice.org to
mdtext.

It will also be a problem, unless we accompany it with other changes:
for example, http://www.openoffice.org/pt/ would completely break, and
all external sites that now link to some of our .htm files would break too.

It was intentional. Before doing so we would need to make a group
decision about how to treat the two types of files.

Regardless of what templates we apply, the best solution should:
1) Allow a .htaccess redirect/rewrite from .htm to .html (to preserve
existing internal and external links)
2) Have the SVN file names match the URLs: editing a file named
"news.htm" in SVN should not result in a change in a page with URL
".../news.html". The current handling confuses the CMS too (for example,
no diff is reported). So either we mass-rename files from .htm to .html
and rely on 1) above, or we don't change .htm to .html but publish .htm
URLs.

There are two different procedures from view.pm used: ...
There are several templates used from templates/.

To me, .htm and .html are not different file types and were never used
as such: I mean, volunteers historically committed .htm or .html
according to their habits, but it doesn't make sense to have different
ways of handling them now. So I would tend to rename all .htm to .html
and put the .htaccess redirect in place, and have only one "type" of
HTML files to handle.

  Andrea.

Exactly.

From path.pm
[qr!\.html$!, html_page => { template => "html_page.html" }],
[qr!\.htm$!, html_page => { template => "html_page.html" }],

r1221295 | wave | 2011-12-20 06:52:47 -0800 (Tue, 20 Dec 2011) | 1 line

Wrap .htm files like .html. Comment a couple of PayPal references. The page
"donate-thanks.html" states that it is landing page after PayPal donations to
TOO - changed to request donations to the ASF. (Not sure if it is still used.)

Daniel example was from three hours prior on Dec. 20, 2011.

I think that we can purge these *.htm duplicates, but if we do it will be a
"sledgehammer" build.

It was intentional. Before doing so we would need to make a group decision
about how to treat the two types of files.

[qr!\.html$!, html_page => { template => "html_page.html" }],
[qr!\.htm$!, html_page => { template => "html_page.html" }],

Note that this will change htm to html just like the folllowing mdtext files
are changed into html:

[qr!doctype.mdtext$!, single_narrative => { template => "doctype.html"
}],
[qr!brand.mdtext$!, single_narrative => { template => "brand.html" }],
[qr!footer.mdtext$!, single_narrative => { template => "footer.html" }],
[qr!topnav.mdtext$!, single_narrative => { template => "navigator.html"
}],
[qr!leftnav.mdtext$!, single_narrative => { template =>
"navigator.html" }],
[qr!rightnav.mdtext$!, single_narrative => { template =>
"navigator.html" }],
[qr!\.mdtext$!, single_narrative => { template =>
"single_narrative.html" }],

There are two different procedures from view.pm used:

single_narrative and html_page.

There are several templates used from templates/.

html_page.html
single_narrative.html
navigator.html
doctype.html
brand.html
footer.html

I took a look at this issues. Would this allow us to build with java 7?

I'm wondering about this because our buildbots are configured with
java 6 and I *really* think we should go onto 7 if at all possible.

ups I didn't suggest that! This may break your system, at least it does
in Fedora, where all java stuff is built with Java 7, targeted to a JVM
7. The best thing is to download a JDK 6 from Oracle, install it in /opt
and configure --with-jdk-home, this way you don't break your system.

the build system is still looking for stuff from the JDK 7, as the path
suggests: java-7-openjdk-amd64

I guess LinuxX86-64Env.Set.sh has some old variables, look at JAVA_HOME
because the includes are generated from that variable, see SOLARINC

SOLARINC=-I$JAVA_HOME/include -I$JAVA_HOME/include/linux
-I$JAVA_HOME/include/native_threads/include

If you removed everything from JDK7, then run ./configure again so that
it updates LinuxX86-64Env.Set.sh

If it still fails, make sure to explicitly point to the JDK directory
configuring with --with-jdk-home

Ariel, removing all JDK7 worked! Heck yes.

This time it failed at VCL:
make: *** No rule to make target
`/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/include/jni.h', needed by
`/home/ljdelight/aoo/trunk/main/solver/350/unxlngx6.pro/workdir/CxxObject/vcl/source/window/syschild.o'.
 Stop.

I'll double check my dirs are clear, java_home is set, and double
check I destroyed all jdk7 in synaptic.

Thanks a bunch.

I've no idea. In theory you can use javac from JDF 7 to compile old
code, and even target to an older JVM, as javac has the -source and
-target options, but I've no idea if the HSQLDB ant scripts has this
options set (ant's javac task supports both source and target
attributes).

The 3D-engine is limited concerning shadows, but the rest is usable. Only
the UI needs an improvement.

What I would like to was to create a half "ball" out of a circle (a dome
for an astromony observatory, a hobby of mine, when I do not work on MWIKI
or l10n), and then add some cutting lines etc, for a mechanic to follow.

Do you have already enabled the set of predefined 3D-objects? Right click
the drawing toolbar > Customize > Check "3D-objects". The set contains a
"Half-Sphere". Perhaps that is already what you are searching for.

That helped me halfway.

Do you know the chapter about 3D-Objects in the Draw-Guide? I ask because
it is not clear, how much do you already know about 3D objects. For
example, do you know the difference between object properties and scene
properties?

No problem in asking, I know a lot about 3d objects...I used to use 3Dmax,
but working with AOO, I felt I should give draw a try.

Then you will probably stay with 3Dmax.

Working with updating the wiki, I tried to use it :-)

but the page:
http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Draw_Guide

is very empty ??

so where is the guide ?

Documentation are made by ODFAuthors.
http://www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english/draw-guide
You can use the LO guides, the difference is small.

Am I wrong or is the 3D support limited to presentation and not really fit
for drawing (in case not is there any work in progress) ?

No, the objects are the same in Draw and Impress. One difference between
Impress and Draw is, that you have animation in Impress and that you have
layer in Draw.

In case not, can anybody recommend a good tool, where I can import the
files in AOO and write the documents.

What part of AOO you want to use? If you will use Writer, then the
3D-application should be able to export to pictures. If you will produce a
presentation in Impress, then Flash might work as well, you can use the
Flash plugin.

I actually just need draw...I have to make a drawing of a dome, made of
triangels.

That will only work using macros, because the rotation does not use
triangles and extrusion will not generate a half sphere. You would have
to place each triangle individually and that is practically nearly
impossible with the current UI.

So my idea was to take a half sphere and draw lines on it...in

3Dmax that is a piece of cake, because you work in 2d with X,Y,Z planes and
it generates the 3d object.

Therefore I ask what do you want to do with the result. If it will
become a picture in the target, why not using 3Dmax?

Drawing 3D-lines will be hard; using hatching or picture texture might
be easier. But if it was easy in 3Dmax, I would use that application.

Kind regards
Regina

There is a patch in debian that adds some stubs for this. The real solution is
updating hsqldb
though.

On the subject of Java 7, someone should look at
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=121098

The fix is rather trivial.

Re: AOO trunk build fails with HSQLDB

2012-12-16 Thread janI
I use ubuntu (12.04 server and 12.10 desktop) and have no problem building
trunk, branches/l10n.

I use the following conf call:

./configure \
 --with-dmake-url=
http://dmake.apache-extras.org.codespot.com/files/dmake-4.12.tar.bz2 \
 --with-epm-url=http://ftp.easysw.com/pub/epm/3.7/epm-3.7-source.tar.gz\
 --disable-odk \
 --disable-binfilter \
 --enable-wiki-publisher \
 --with-lang="da"

(also with --with-lang).

I have not changed any java setup, actually I just installed the 12.10
yesterday, so it is fresh out of the box.

I had a problem with sysui and permission, but I committed a change to build
a while ago.

java is version 1.7.0_09
OpenJDK runtime (IcedTea 2.3.3)
OpenJDK 64bit server build 23-2-b09

I just had another build all this evening which just completed.

This method was added on Java 7, see
http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/api/java/sql/Statement.html#isCloseOnCompletion%28%29

Either use alternatives to switch to Java 6, or better install Java
6 from your distros repo, leaving your system's default, and pointing
the build system to the right JDK 6, configuring with --with-jdk-home
for example:

--with-jdk-home=/opt/jdk1.6

here JDK 6 is in /opt/jdk1.6

AOO trunk build fails with HSQLDB

2012-12-16 Thread Lucas Burson
Hi,

I cannot build AOO from source. I use Ubuntu 64bit. I have never been
able to build correctly; I switched from jdk7 to jdk6 and that didn't
change anything.
I used these instructions, [1], to get things started but I use a
different svn url. (off topic: I tried svn-git but it stops responding
after a while).

These are the commands that I run to get the build going:
svn co https://svn-master.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/trunk ~/aoo/trunk
cd ~/aoo/trunk/main/
autoconf
~/aoo/trunk/main/configure
--with-dmake-url=http://dmake.apache-extras.org.codespot.com/files/dmake-4.12.tar.bz2
--with-epm-url=http://ftp.easysw.com/pub/epm/3.7/epm-3.7-source.tar.gz
--disable-odk --disable-binfilter
~/aoo/trunk/main/bootstrap
source ~/aoo/trunk/main/LinuxX86-64Env.Set.sh
cd ~/aoo/trunk/main/instsetoo_native/
build --all -P4 -- -P4

It fails. I get a bunch of compiler errors about abstract methods not
being overridden:
"
[javac]
/home/ljdelight/aoo/trunk/main/hsqldb/unxlngx6.pro/misc/build/hsqldb/src/org/hsqldb/jdbc/jdbcStatement.java:127:
error: jdbcStatement is not abstract and does not override abstract
method isCloseOnCompletion() in Statement
[javac] public class jdbcStatement implements Statement {
[javac]^
ERROR: error 65280 occurred while making /home/ljdelight/aoo/trunk/main/hsqldb
When you have fixed the errors in that module you can resume the build
by running:
build --from hsqldb
"

Thanks for the help,
Lucas

[WEBSITE] Problem with .htm files

2012-12-16 Thread Andrea Pescetti
I had a long discussion with Infra today trying to find out why a change
I had applied was not appearing. Analyzing it, it turns out that we have
a problem already visible on over 400 pages and related to .htm files
(as opposed to .html files).

Reproducing is easy:
1) Edit a .htm file, e.g., do this:
http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/openoffice/ooo-site/trunk/content/pt/about/newsletter.htm?r1=1413471&r2=1422592&diff_format=h

2) Publish the changes and you get file duplication:

http://www.openoffice.org/pt/about/newsletter.htm
(the existing URL, ending in .htm, not updated)

http://www.openoffice.org/pt/about/newsletter.html
(a new URL, containing the fix)

This silent change of URLs is quite scary and we already have 401
"duplicate" pages. For other examples see

http://www.openoffice.org/fr/Documentation/liens.htm
http://www.openoffice.org/fr/Documentation/liens.html

or

http://www.openoffice.org/ui/proposals/Readonly_mode.htm
http://www.openoffice.org/ui/proposals/Readonly_mode.html

Daniel Shahaf, who investigated the problem, suggests that we take a
look at our path.pm.

Looking at it, I think the place to start investigating is line 14 of
http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/openoffice/ooo-site/trunk/lib/path.pm?revision=1413471&view=markup
which seems to actually turn .htm files into .html files, but it's
probably best that someone familiar with the CMS does the change, since
I definitely don't want to break the website.

  Andrea.

RE: [UX]Comments visibility

2012-12-16 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
It might be useful, as part of UX review, to look into the overall situation
with regard to information that is not being shown and for which there is no
indication where it is present.

Here are some considerations that come to mind:

Part of the issue about invisible comments has to do with determining what is
appropriate when documents are signed. Currently, digital signatures apply to
all of the content, whether visible or not. It is impractical to make it
otherwise. Warnings are appropriate when a signature is specified and there is
any hidden content. (In addition to comments, this applies to tracked changes
and change history and alternative graphic renditions that might not be visible
as well. There may also be discrepancies in document properties and other
metadata.)

Some unobtrusive indicator that there is a comment and revealing when the
comment is included in a selection is also valuable (whether leading to a
deletion, copying via the clip-board, or something else). It should also be
possible to strip comments and there might need to be finer-grain control.
E.g., it can be useful to have a way to review comments that steps through them
with the option of removing and/or editing them in the manner that is used for
accepting/rejecting tracked changes.

Finally, I am certain there are accessibility issues around this too, and some
marker might be helpful. Advice is needed from accessibility experts.

This makes sense, but then we would have to add an option at least in
Tools - Options - Writer - View to hide comment anchors too (and it
would have to be active only if "Comments" in unset... not very friendly).

> 2- Make note anchor show a tooltip with the note content, the same way

This would work, but the user wouldn't get rid of comments completely.
He would still see the anchor and I don't know how annoying this would be.

Definitely a good question for UX!

apply the style "Hanging indent". If you need to adapt the amount of

There are two triangles on the left side of the horizontal ruler. The
upper one with tip down is for the indent of the first line and the
lower one is for the indent of the rest of the lines. What is your
problem with this triangles? Drag them to the indent you want.

We do not. Apache OpenOffice is designed to work with styles, although
hard formatting works as well. So if you want a hanging indent then
apply the style "Hanging indent". If you need to adapt the amount of
indent to your needs, then modify the style.

What about using the forum http://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/ ?

+1!!!

The new handlers are really nice, and the anchor transparency is just
gorgeous!

I have comitted this now, mainly that all get the chance to have a look
and play around with it. Please do not hesitate when you see negative

not mean it's the end of the story :-)

For the worst case, svn *is* a time machine. I (still) hope that the
handles which are more pleasing to the eye find mostly everyones liking.
I was very careful, the change is moderate.

Just take a look first ;-)

The buildbot version has it now and I tried it. The transparency for the
anchor icon is really a large improvement. And the handles have a good
compromise between brightness and transparency. The draw center and
mirror axis markers are visible in front of dark backgrounds too. So I
think, well done. :)

Note that Hanya has provided Bookmarks Menu extension and rupxamgon
VisibleBookmarks extension, both in the Extesions repository, which are useful
in helping to work with bookmarks and help overcome the above problem from
/tj/.

Their (or similar) code and functionality could be usefully incorporated into
AOO future releases

by accident.

KG01 - The system should avoid deleting hidden elements. Should the system try
to delete content which includes a hidden comment, we should inform the user of
the consequence of the action, and provide a way to quickly review the comment,
in context, and give them options on how to proceed. Options could include 1)
delete content and comment, 2) delete content and push comment to cursor
location 3) or cancel action.

I agree this can be a usability problem.

So I think there are two point that can be considered:
1- Set by default the option of viewing note anchors even when "view
comments" is disabled.

KG01 - View option for common objects could be simplified. With some task pane
toolbar view options (clipart gallery, navigator, etc) moving to sidebar task
pane, we could push a high frequency view options command (dropdown) to the
main toolbar. Where one click on/off could control view options, such as
comments.

This makes sense, but then we would have to add an option at least in Tools - Options -
Writer - View to hide comment anchors too (and it would have to be active only if
"Comments" in unset... not very friendly).

2- Make note anchor show a tooltip with the note content, the same way
footnote anchors show footnote content when hover over it, but of course
only when "view comment" is disable.

KG01 - we could explore user friendly action tool bars as a way to reveal
comments.

This would work, but the user wouldn't get rid of comments completely. He would
still see the anchor and I don't know how annoying this would be.

KG01 - I'll add this to the ux backlog. This is an area where we should sketch
out some concepts, then socialize for feedback.

Definitely a good question for UX!

KG - Yup. Keep 'em coming :)

Regards,
  Andrea.

While you're thinking about visibility, please think about bookmarks.
Totally invisible, very deletable, combination undesirable.
