Re: R: the right Accessibility configuration
Deyla, Actually Windows accessibility in Apache OpenOffice no longer makes any use of the Java Accessibility Bridge to interface to the Java Accessibility API installed with a JRE. A native accessibility bridge for Windows has been implemented based on the IAccessible2 API. Apparently JAWS and OpenEyes do not yet correctly support global use of the IAccessible2 API, as I believe they have in the past implemented support as program moudules, i.e. for the old IBM Symphony implementation of IA2. At present, the NVDA project provides more functional support for the IAccessible2 API standard. Re: Speech recognition with openoffice
This has been addressed multiple times by the development community. https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=6104 https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=70567 https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=71542 https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=84997 https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=116253 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=69039 As a cross platform program supporting Linux, OS X and Windows environments--the UNO Accessibility API will remain the basis of support for AT. In short this is not an Apache Open Office (or a LibreOffice) responsibility, it falls to 3rd party extension developers. And it remains for external projects to implement AT for mobility impaired users who would benefit from speech recognition. Microsoft TSF is in legacy status. And currently no agreed standard exists for Speach recognition. Microsoft has gone its own way with UI and MSSR. And Nuance, with its current Dragon NS 12--Full Text Control function--looks to again have omitted Apache OpenOffice and TDF LibreOffice support for UNO API, and only supporting Microsoft productivity products. The full implementation of a native IAccessible2 (v1.3) standard based bridge for Windows OS now provides the AT hooks needed to implement Windows speech recognition to both Apache OpenOffice and LibreOffice. That might be a Nuance DNS commercial module, or I'd lean more to an Extension for AOO/LibreOffice using the Python based Dragonfly speech recognition framework and a AOO/LibreOffice specific command-module for Microsoft WSR. Perhaps a cross over from the NVDA community. -- View this message in context: http://openoffice.2283327.n4.nabble.com/Speech-recognition-with-openoffice-tp4659010p4659028.html Sent from the Development mailing list archive at Nabble.com. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: dev-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: dev-h...@openoffice.apache.org

RE: Web accessibility guidelines -- which ones?
Rob, *, ... However, there was a confusing (to me) number of authorities for accessibility standards. It is really pretty simple--WCAG 2.0 is the gold standard for Web content, and is applicable to Non-Web Information and Communications Technologies (ICT). National and International Standards bodies are basing conformance against this standard. WCAG 2.0 A, AA, AAA ( also published as ISO/IEC 40500:2012 ) are functional levels of conformance with accessibility standards. http://www.w3.org/WAI/intro/wcag The reworked AOO Website should probably meet majority of WCAG v2.0 AA level requirements. And Apache OpenOffice as a document preparation and review program should also strive to meet WCAG level A AA conformance criteria for ICT (http://www.w3.org/TR/wcag2ict/ ). Fortunately much of that is accomplished for the website with valid HTML 5.0 and WAI-ARIA markup. While the introduction of IAccessible2 to supplement MSAA, and improvements in ATK and NSAccessibility move the office suite proper into a better compliance with some notable shortcommings. In the United States, the existing Accessibility Board US Section 508 requirements were loosely equivalent to WCAG v1, and are being rewritten to match functional levels of WCAG 2.0 A AA. The draft proposal for U.S. conformance can be found here: http://www.access-board.gov/attachments/article/490/draft-rule.pdf Also, relevant parts of the European Union EN 301 549 ( http://www.etsi.org/deliver/etsi_en/301500_301599/301549/01.00.00_20/en_301549v01c.pdf ) as work of the European Commision (EC) Mandate M 376 ( http://www.mandate376.eu/ ) are also based on WCAG v2.0 level A and AA. So running conformance validators for WCAG 2.0 A, AA, AAA is probably the correct choice in reworking the web site. Re: IA2 branch testing of r1484083 merege with trunk
Jamie, James Teh wrote I've since discovered that I can only reproduce this if I run Writer directly; i.e. via the icon named OpenOffice Writer in the Start Menu or by running swriter.exe. If I run the main OpenOffice application (i.e. the icon named OpenOffice in the Start Menu or soffice.exe), everything works as it should, even after I select to open a new text document. If I open a file associated with OpenOffice, everything works correctly also. Can you reproduce this by running Writer directly? Yes I get exactly the same result with this r1484083 based ia2 branch build. Except for the swriter.exe launcher, all the other components launch without issue as does the Start Center. And like you, when Writer is launched from the start center, it comes up cleanly. On an initial launch from the Writer shortcut, or if running the writer.exe directly--the swriter.exe, soffice.exe, and soffice.bin will all run--but the writer session hangs. Have to manually end the writer process from task manager. A relaunch of any OpenOffice launcher or the start center panel results in a recovery panel that will not complete. A reset of user profile (i.e. delete %AppData%\Openffice ) is the clean way to return function, as edit of the XML recovery stanzas in the OpenOffice registrymodifications.xcu configuration file is not worth the hassle. The user profile will rebuild to default, and just reactivate the Tools -- Options -- Accessibility -- Support assistive technology tools. This issue with the writer.exe launcher is not a problem on the AOO 4.0.0 release, so should resolve when Steve Y. rebases the ia2 branch. Meanwhile, best to simply not use the writer.exe launcher in working with the ia2 branch. RE: Updating BZ versions for next releases
All reasonable changes that should improve the QA process using BZ, especially the last confirmed on 4.0.0--just will need to be kept up going forward. I'd like to clean this up a little, as follows: 1) It is reasonable for someone to report a bug using 3.4.0, 3.4.1 or 4.0.0. None of these versions are end of life so they should be allowed for new bug reports. 2) I don't see the purpose of AOO PleaseHelp as a milestone version. Are we overloading meaning in this field? If we really need track issues that need help we should define a keyword for this. So I'm inclined to delete this milestone version number. 3) I'd also like to simplify the versions across the board to be just 3.4.1, 4.0.0, etc., without the AOO prefix. 4) For Last Confirmation On, I'd like to hide values except for 4.0. We should not be confirming bugs without testing on the most recent version. Sure, new bugs can set Version to 3.4.0 or 3.4.1, but confirmation should occur on 4.0. 5) I'll add a new Target Milestone of 4.0.1 and Version of 4.0.1-dev since it is likely that we will have a 4.0.1 release to address some of the defects that have been reported on 4.0.0. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, even if it is just a quick +1. I would recommend we test IA2 in its branch, and once our QA people give it thumbs up, merge it back to trunk. I do the same with l10n40, and as far as know rejuvenate01 follow that same rules. Lets try to keep trunk free of major untested changes, that makes life easier for everybody. rgds jan I. Apologies, I was not clear. No intention to suggest that Steve Yin's work on the IA2 branch be merged back into the trunk at this time. Support for Windows 7 (and 8) Jump list
Windows 7 (and now 8) have WPF support for Start menu and Task bar feature commonly know as Jump lists. They allow organization of frequent and recent tasks and documents into Jump lists associated with applications when pinned to the Start menu or the Task bar. Apache OpenOffice 4.0 does not implement dedicated support for this Windows specific GUI, yet Jump lists are a major UX aspect of the Windows 7 and now Windows 8 desktop. Buildbot and Unofficial Developer Builds -- whats up?
Sorry for the cross post, but this rubs on both the QA and Dev sides of the project. So, I understand that we are mid-way through, a full regression testing of the 4.0 branch at Rev 1478648. But has the project actively stopped the building of dailys, and have the cognizant developers been asked to stop posting up their snapshot builds? If so, fine but would help to know that as it does impact testing of patches for those of us not rolling our own builds. Or is it just an unfortunate confluence of events between the build bots and the hand posted work for our outstanding AOO developers? In any case the BuildBot site is a mess ( http://ci.apache.org/projects/openoffice/ ) with even the Linux 64-bit now failing. And since the Development Snapshot Builds - full installation sets ( https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Development+Snapshot+Builds#DevelopmentSnapshotBuilds-AOOSnapshotfullsets ) are not labeled with the SVN revision it is frustrating to download and end-up not having a current build to test latest patches. Also, I haven't seen a viable build of the IA2 branch in over a month. Yes, there is the open issue https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=122244 against the nightly build bot site. But nothing noteworthy being discussed there. I'm getting a little concerned, am I missing something? Shenfeng, Yuzhen, Liuping, Rob Took a moment and browsed through the TestLink test cases for the Full Regression and earlier test plans against the trunk and sidebar branch. Unless I completely missed seeing it, one noticeable omission from the test cases in general is a lack keyboard based navigation and use of accelerators. Initial testing is very promising. I'm working on a few tweaks to get NVDA to use some of its custom code for symphony to allow for reporting of formatting, etc. (Unfortunately, Symphony's IA2 implementation doesn't follow the IA2 standard in some areas, though we've already worked around this.) Yes I've spent a bit more time with it, and Steve Yin's folks have done a superb job so far. I am concerned though that you see non-standard IA2, because while the ia2 Branch builds thus far have been for Windows testing, assume that other accessibility components of the Symphony contributed code will also be merged in some fashion. Assume you'd like things to be IAccessible2 1.2.1 and better draft 1.3 compliant. But that will mean some work under the hood to move the Symphony ia2 code base onto the emerging standards for IAccessible2. Obviously lots of work, and at this point Steve Yin characterizes the work on IAccessible2 at only 5% complete-so for getting collaboration on standards compliance in place--now is the best time. Also, for the other bridges--ATK/AT-SPI and NSAccessible--and their mappings of the existing UNO Accessibility API, this ongoing work on a native Windows bridge offers an opportunity to clean up and redefine incomplete or inadequate roles and mappings to bring all the APIs equivalent correcting any omissions. And I'd hope that once started, the whole UNO Accessibility API could ultimately be systematically extended to support needs of all the ISO/IEC 13066-1 parts for improving AT. I found and read the mailing list thread about this support and saw your question about bug tracking, but there hasn't been a response yet. I'll check the thread from time to time, but it'd be great if you could let us know once a decision has been made about bug tracking. I'm hoping for Bugzilla, as this makes for better tracking and I'd rather not be swamped by the general ooo-dev list. :) Will keep an eye out for response. Steve, Nothing substantive yet in working through the Windows build of the ia2 branch. Should we build against Linux and OSX and be testing for impact on ATK/AT-SPI and NSAccessibility User Interface? And, with QA and testing of the ia2 branch proceeding what mechanism should folks use for reporting and tracking issues on the ia2 branch builds? Should we stay with PM and ML exchanges, or start to use Bugzilla at issues.apache.org/ooo? I believe that starting with BZ tracking now provides continuity upon merge of branch back into AOO4.00. And, if into Bugzilla, would suggest a note in your AOO 4.0 IAccessible2 release planning wiki that QA participants and casual users report in Bugzilla categorized for consistency as against: Product: UI Component: AccessBridge Version: AOO4.00-dev Stuart =-=-= Sidebar--the legacy IAccessible2 enhancement bug could probably be revised https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=107914 And here is a generic BZ search for accessibility issues https://issues.apache.org/ooo/buglist.cgi?query_format=advancedresolution=---short_desc=msaa%20accessible%20iaccessible%20iaccessible2%20accessibilityshort_desc_type=anywordssubstrorder=component%2Cpriority%2Cbug_severityquery_based_on=

So an uninstall of JRE 1.7u11 did set everything right with this initial build of the ia2 branch, a big thanks Ariel for building and posting to get the QA effort rolling. And congratulations to Steve and all the ia2 branch team for some very solid work on the merge! With no JRE the, Open Accessibility (A11y) group's AccProbe Eclipse RCP can not run, but comfortable to say the \winaccessibility IAccessible2 implementation is already matching support Symphony 3.0.1 fix pack 2 for basic MSAA/IAccessible IAccessible2 roles. Folks doing QA will need to use AccProbe so should go ahead and install either JRE 1.6u39 or JRE 1.7u13, but Java Access Bridge is NOT a requirement for full function of the ia2 branch. Since I still fight with LibreOffice and the JAB I went with the JRE 1.6u39 install--the JRE 1.7 builds with JAB 2.0.3 are still a problem ( https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=121510 ) Only a couple of hours into the interface and working out the testing tools--the a11y project's AccProbe is going to need some work, but it or something similar is necessary for working on correctness of IAccessibility2 events and roles. I have to dig deeper, but I do think there are some pretty big holes in what is instrumented. At the same time, I found Microsofts AccEvent and especially the Inspect tools from the Windows 8 SDK very helpful. I started leaving the Inspect panel running minimized and popping it open to review non-sounding actions in the GUI. And if working with a screen reader, folks should note that when using a current release of NVDA (2012.3.1) the NV Access developers have put a lot of effort into the project to read UI Automation and MSAA events--so it is not purely dependent on IAccessible2 rendering of UNO Accessibility API roles and events for the user interface. Its a hybrid, but it is already working as well with the ia2 branch as with the last Symphony builds and I think on a par with GNOME Orca for LibreOffice, I don't have access to JAWS but suspect there will be similar improvements in fidelity over Java Access Bridge based Accessibility and AT support there as well.

Also, in addition to JAWS, a current build of NVDA would be helpful. And I'm sure Jamie Teh at NV Access has some solid Python utilities for use with exposing events in Windows Stuart Foote
No Accessibility API support with the Java SE 7 Accessibility API, problem with JAB 2.0.3 and passing event focus
Have an open, but unconfirmed, bug against Apache OpenOffice 3.4.1 https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=121510 Can confirm it, but unable to edit the Bugzilla status. Also, I just verified it remains an issue with the 4.0 Developer builds, r1400866 Probably related to Oracle's work on: http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=7166956 Impact is that Apache OpenOffice users must continue to use a Java SE 6 JRE and JAB v2.0.2 to have any usable Assistive Technology support. With Java SE 6 public support ending, this likely will become an issue until the IBM Symphony \winaccessibility contribution can be integrated.
