[jira] [Commented] (ZOOKEEPER-2232) zkperl is out of sync with CPAN releases

Patrick Hunt commented on ZOOKEEPER-2232:
-

Hi [~maflick88] are you still maintaining CPAN zkperl? Sorry for the delay, but
I only just noticed this while looking into ZOOKEEPER-2133. I'd be interested
in working with you to get the patches back into our contrib if you're still
interested. While trying to address ZOOKEEPER-2133 I noticed that a few of the
tests are failing (ubuntu 14.04 base) - so I'd want to get those addressed as
well.

One thing we'd have to consider - are the patches licensed under the Apache
license? And something that you'd (or the original author if not you) be
willing to contribute back.

> First some background here:
> Around 6 months ago I had some bug fixes I wanted patched in zkperl, which I
> had been using through [CPAN|https://metacpan.org/pod/Net::ZooKeeper]. I
> volunteered to take over maintenance of the code, and Chris Darroch set me up
> with permissions to push new releases to CPAN. At the time I was unaware that
> Net::ZooKeeper was bundled with the rest of the ZooKeeper code, and hadn't
> reached out to any other ZooKeeper devs.
> Since that time there have been a few CPAN releases, which included some
> feature requests from
> users([#1|https://github.com/mark-5/p5-net-zookeeper/pull/1],
> [#2|https://github.com/mark-5/p5-net-zookeeper/pull/2]), bug
> fixes([#3|https://github.com/mark-5/p5-net-zookeeper/pull/3],
> [#5|https://github.com/mark-5/p5-net-zookeeper/issues/5]) and test failure
> fixes.
> I'd love for zkperl to be kept in sync with CPAN releases, and to have other
> ZooKeeper devs approve feature requests from users. Is there any preferred
> process for keeping these distributions in sync?
> I don't currently have any specific ideas. I mainly wanted to start the
> conversation here, with other devs.

Re: github.com zookeeper pull requests in "limbo"

Looks like lucene/solr stuck with patches attached to jiras:

Same with Hadoop

Re: github.com zookeeper pull requests in "limbo"

2016-03-10 Thread Patrick Hunt
Hm. Looks pretty straightforward - although in our case we have to
consider that git repos already exist (for bk it was new). From the
lucene infra jira it looks like they said to recreate the git repo and
mirror. The additional side effect of doing that would be that all the
"limbo" PRs will get blown away.

As part of this change we'll need to consider how to change our HTC
process. e.g. do we still want to require folks to attach patches to
jiras or can we just use PRs to do it. If so how. What about review
process.

How is BK handling this?

Right, we moved to a git repo when the project became TLP:

Re: github.com zookeeper pull requests in "limbo"

2016-03-10 Thread Patrick Hunt
Hm, that seems to be about github integration, see this for what
lucene/solr recently did:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-11056 "Migrate Lucene
project from SVN to Git."

I'm also +1 for git.

 However I'm recommending we turn it _off_ until then. Interestingly
 there's a discussion going on right now in apache infra about this
 (github mirrors and PRs), I'll let you know.

 That said, is there any interest to move to git and drop svn? I'd like
 to move personally, hadoop moved a while back and lucene/solr just
 moved recently. I think it's a pretty well worn path if we're
 interested to do so.

 someday we might move to git, but for the time being it seems like we

Re: github.com zookeeper pull requests in "limbo"

2016-03-10 Thread Patrick Hunt
I could see us turning it on if we move to git as our source repo.

I think it's a pretty well worn path if we're
interested to do so.

 https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/ZOOKEEPER/HowToContribute

 someday we might move to git, but for the time being it seems like we
 should do something about this.

 I was thinking about contacting Apache infra and asking them if they
 can turn off accepting pull requests at github.com, just wanted to
 check with dev@ to see if this makes sense or do folks want to do
 something else? If I don't hear back anything negative in the next few
 days I'll ping infra about shutting down acceptance of pull requests
 (may not be possible but I'll check). I'm not talking about removing
 the mirror to be clear, just shutting down accepting pull requests on
 the mirror.

 Patrick

 ps. regardless we probably need to get back to everyone and ask them
 to follow the HTC page I don't seem to be able to close out the
 PRs, just comment on them, so that's going to be a possible issue as
 well arg.

[jira] [Commented] (ZOOKEEPER-2383) Startup race in ZooKeeperServer

 ]

Rakesh R commented on ZOOKEEPER-2383:
-

I think I found the code changes which results in this bug. Its due to the
change in startup sequence - ZOOKEEPER-2026.

Here it just moved up setting 'zkServer' reference before starting up the
standalone server fully. Internally, this 'zkServer' reference is used to see
ZooKeeperServer's running status. In the defect scenario, the standalone server
is partially started(by Thread1) and simultaneously client(by Thread2) send a
connection request. Since the 'zkServer' is not null it proceeds to process the
connection request and causing the trouble. Please refer my previous comment to
understand the problematic call sequence.

{code}
ZooKeeperServer.java

private void readConnectRequest() throws IOException, InterruptedException {
if (zkServer == null) {
throw new IOException("ZooKeeperServer not running");
}
zkServer.processConnectRequest(this, incomingBuffer);
initialized = true;
}
{code}

Probably should use server RUNNING state instead of "zkServer == null" checks
to know the running status. Server is updating the state to RUNNING after
starting all the services.
{code}
ZooKeeperServer.java

public synchronized void startup() {
if (sessionTracker == null) {
createSessionTracker();
}
startSessionTracker();
setupRequestProcessors();

registerJMX();

state = State.RUNNING;
notifyAll();
}
{code}
