Taken resultsdb_frontend, any chance you could look at hddfancontrol? (

Zabbix doesn't run on Fedora 24

2016-09-16 Thread Erik Logtenberg
Hi guys,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, so my apologies if you
feel that is not the case.

The zabbix package doesn't run on Fedora 24, due to a restriction in the
selinux-policy. This wasn't an issue on earlier versions of Fedora, but
since 24 Zabbix just doesn't work anymore. There is an open bug on this:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1349998

Usually the selinux-policy guys pick this up pretty quickly, but maybe
this bug was somehow overlooked. I posted some small updates, apparently
kind of annoyed Volker Fröhlich in the process - which wasn't my
intention by the way. What is the right way to get this bug to the
attention of the selinux-policy guys?

On a side note, I am still puzzled that this package is non-functional
in Fedora. Volker said he couldn't test on all Fedora releases, but is
it not basic Fedora QA policy to at the very least test if a package
actually runs on the current release with default settings?
I suppose such a basic test could even be automated relatively simply.

Kind regards,

Erik.

Re: Orphaning python-lirc package

2016-09-16 Thread Alec Leamas

On 16/09/16 10:32, Ján ONDREJ (SAL) wrote:

Hello,

I'm orphaning python-lirc package, which is long time not supported
by upstream and has no python3 support. Last release has been in 2005.

There is an alternative python-lirc package, but with different python
import (lirc instead of pylirc) and I have also an python-ctypes
alternative, which can be updated to be compatible with current Fedora
package (py2 and py3 compatible, one .py file only).

I think this package should retire, but if anyone interested, a new
package should be reviewed to replace this one.

Actually, the proper action might be to take whatever exists and file it
as an RFE bug to lirc upstream so that lirc could ship python bindings.

BTW, I note that the existing packages does not support sending a. k. a.
blasting, which is supported by lirc client libraries as of version 0.9.2+

Cheers!

I don't know how to determine this.

SELinux is set to enforcing, if I reboot with enforcing=0 the same

I know a lot of folks find it difficult to configure.

I proposed some docs changes that might (I hope) help people:

https://github.com/fedora-infra/fmn.web/pull/76/commits/93bbe73e514b86c59403d9362920e53c38033c8e

Other suggestions to make it easier welcome.

Yeah, that would probably be important for everyone. But an email
address is available for anyone who can file a bugzilla, so this should
be possible.

It seems that our compression routine is borked and falls over with EINVAL
when it is asked to compress an empty file. I'll fix that.
But if the file it is trying to compress is empty, the problem already happened
before (the core should not have 0 size).

What is the kernel.core_pattern value that you are using?
Do you have the same result with the default of
'|/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-coredump %P %u %g %s %t %c %e'?
Is selinux enabled, and if yes, do you get a different result with enforcing
off?

You don't want much, do you? :-)

A person who can do what you require might as well fix the bug, because
they have to know the application almost as well as a developer. (I
understand that this an exaggeration, hyperbole, but there is some
truth to it also.)

'what upstream version'

The version of the problem software is easy to pull out of the src.rpm.

'reproduce the bug using generic installation from sources'

The environment where the software runs is *part* of the bug. If the
software can't deal with various environments properly, that's a bug in
the software. Is upstream saying, our software only works in generic
environments and we don't guarantee it, or fix it, anywhere else? If
so, they should explicitly state that, or their development environment,
and disclaim any other usage.

This might make sense if I'm Joe Blow, and I'm running my custom
distribution, but for Fedora, Ubuntu, Suse, Debian, Arch,
Gentoo, where there are standardization processes? I don't think so.

The software resources and scope also matters. If I've created a small
app to display some proc variables by myself, with a single computer,
that's a different situation than a program like gcc or gnome or kde.

'want to see a concise summary of findings'
'want to see an explanation why the bug is an upstream bug, not a
distro-specific'

If I'm killing flies or mosquitoes, I want them to land on a block and
stand still while I swat them with the fly swatter. But they don't
seem to co-operate. Bugs in software are like that.

I agree with you that the person who is doing this triage has to have
some domain knowledge, and provide a first filter, but I think the
filter can be much coarser than you do. That is, I put more onus on
the developers than you do.

Upstream is free to ignore these tickets like they are being ignored in
redhat bugzilla. But if there are a thousand tickets from redhat,
ubuntu, debian, suse, arch, debian with the same complaint, I think it
would be evidence that there is something wrong with the upstream
software (just my opinion), and the developers might want to focus some
attention on the problem. i.e. where there's smoke, there's probably
fire.

This was only a suggestion, in the spirit of mind mapping, or
brainstorming, where wild and outrageous ideas of solutions are thrown
out to trigger thinking outside the box. And, if nothing else, I
learned more about the problem because of your feedback.

And I thought we'd done that in F24 too. We *certainly* shipped the
newer libp11 which obsoletes it, even if we didn't manage to properly
retire the engine_pkcs11 source package :)

It looks like maybe some 0 length coredump get cleaned up sooner than

that it was within the lifetime of Fedora 24.

I don't care so much about all that (it's more important for systemd
due to distro integration), I just want the bug reporter CCed on the
upstream bug, and able to respond when I ask a question.

So this is the issue really. I guess we should make the output
more clear in that case. Please try something as simple as
bash -c 'kill -ABRT $$' → this should result in a coredump appearing
in /var/lib/systemd/coredump. If it doesn't than maybe you don't
have enough free space and systemd-coredump, or something else is wrong.

Yes, of course (MaxUse=, KeepFree= in coredump.conf, similarly to how
journals are cleaned up, and there's also time based cleanup specified
in /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/systemd.conf). I just wanted to underline the
fact that old coredumps can be removed by hand if wanted.

Automatically? If I receive a bug upstream, I want to receive it
without the distribution's embellishments: I want to know what
*upstream* version of the software was used, how I can reproduce the
bug using generic installation from sources, and not using the distro
package, etc. Also, I don't want to read the full history on the
distribution bugtracker, I want to see a concise summary of
findings. I want to see an explanation why the bug is an upstream bug,
not a distro-specific thing. The person who is forwarding bugs has to
all of this by hand, and doing this automatically is infeasible.

Works for me with this change to the spec file:

-export MAVEN_OPTS="-Xms1024m -Xmx3096m -XX:PermSize=128m
-XX:MaxPermSize=384m"
+export MAVEN_OPTS="-Xms1024m -Xmx2048m -Xss5m"

Scratch build: http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=15662528

root.log shows:

OK so the confusion is that it should use the last matching entry,
which it does, but then there's no file.

Wouldn't it make more sense to have a way for package maintainers to
decide if a bug was local or upstream, and a button they could push to
automatically send it upstream?

Suppose that if a fedora package has an upstream bug tracker, *fedora*
owns a login to their bug tracker. Then, when the maintainer looks at
the bug, he or she decides whether to send it upstream by clicking a
button. If it is sent upstream, the [yet to be designed and built
application] converts it to the appropriate format, logs in to the
upstream bug tracker, and puts it there. And it places a message in
the bug on redhat bugzilla stating that the bug has been sent upstream
for resolution. That leaves the package maintainer dealing only with
local bugs, and new releases. Sort of like abort for packages.

Lots of issues here, but it greatly simplifies the package maintainer's
job.I have 10 bugs today. I look at them and send those for
upstream there, with a click. Leaving me 4. Much more manageable.

But it takes work to have this happen, mostly one time, but with some
ongoing maintenance.

Database of upstream logins and passwords has to be built and
maintained.

Getting a package approved requires a fedora login and password to be
approved, or an exception if it doesn't exist, and entry into the
database.

I don't know how many different kinds of bug trackers there are,
but translating bugzilla to multiple other layouts might be an
issue. Maybe instead, just place a link to the fedora bugzilla on
their bug tracker. Still, this requires programming and maintenance.

Is the trade-off of resources worth it?

FWIW gave up trying to configure my notifications and just turned them
all off. Last time I checked, I couldn't find a way to configure
notifications on a package-specific basis. The flood of notifications
from packages I have commit access to but don't want to receive
notifications for was pretty overwhelming.

What about "flow" or "journey"? With "flow", we could use the term "reflow" for
switching between them as well.

Running docker images crashing F25?

2016-09-16 Thread Philip Rhoades

People,

I couldn't find a specific docker Fedora list so I am posting here -
feel free to tell me a more appropriate list . .

I decided to live on the edge and did a bare-metal install of F25 x86_64
a little while ago - it has been going pretty smoothly but in the last
few days I have been playing around with docker again (specifically:
cprogrammer/indimail:fedora-23 ie a qmail server) and I have had a few
spontaneous reboots - one that locked up at a BIOS splash screen.

Is this something I should be helping to debug somehow? I just did a
full "dnf update" before the last couple of crashes . .

Thanks,

Phil.

I agree on not using "version" for this. I'm not completely sold on
"stream", partly because we talk about "upstream" and "downstream" so
much, and this is unrelated to that. How about "branch"? That fits with
the idea of "rebase" for switching between them

[Bug 1376845] New: The license tag should mention GPL+ or Artistic

2016-09-16 Thread bugzilla
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1376845

Bug ID: 1376845
Summary: The license tag should mention GPL+ or Artistic
   Product: Fedora
   Version: rawhide
 Component: perl-Params-Validate
  Assignee: rc040...@freenet.de
  Reporter: ppi...@redhat.com
QA Contact: extras...@fedoraproject.org
CC: lxt...@gmail.com, perl-devel@lists.fedoraproject.org,
rc040...@freenet.de

Params-Validate-1.24/c/ppport.h contains license declaration:

This program is free software; you can redistribute it and/or
modify it under the same terms as Perl itself.

The file is included into compilation unit when compiling
lib/Params/Validate/XS.c into XS.so. Thus I think the spec file should mention
"GPL+ or Artistic" in the License tag. Now it declares "Artistic 2.0" only.

This is exactly why I'm against the "version" keyword here :)

Just because another "version"/"stream" provides newer upstream
version of your software doesn't mean it's really an upgrade
for you. It might, it might not be. You need to consider
other module metadata too.

Anyway, the verb we've been using for switching between module
"versions"/"streams" so far is "rebase", AFAIC. I believe
that's also open for discussion.

I appreciate the idea, but I'm not sure it will actually pan out that way.

Right now, the bulk of problem reports for users still go to bugzilla
either via ABRT or manual filing. Ask is used more for true newbies
or for issues where the person doesn't even know where to file the
bug. The community helping there can handle the type and number of
issues being reported. It's users helping users.
If we start directing users to Ask instead of bugzilla in a
coordinated effort, I'm afraid a few things will happen:

a) The problem of maintainers ignoring bug reports will become even
more prevalent because asking them to monitor multiple locations for
problem reports.

b) Regardless of whether A happens or not, we run the risk of
information loss and excess process being implemented. Bugzilla and
Ask could be linked somehow, but bridges rarely work well.

c) We'll quickly burn the existing Ask community out.

This works in IT because they have dedicated customer support teams.
We do not. The problem we face is not really the tools we have, but
the lack of people dedicated to customer support. Trying to jumpstart
one from the Ask community seems to be asking an awful lot.

Yes. Or even variations of the same upstream version.

I'm really pro-stream here because these identifiers have
nothing to do with upgrade paths and some modules or module
stacks wouldn't even have any concept of numbered, progressive
builds/releases. It's just a label.

I would save the word "version" to identify updates within
these "streams".

> > * enable vs install vs select
>
> select is the worst :)

It's what I half-jokingly suggested during the last WG meeting :)

The reason was it's a verb we often use when talking about
modularity -- users "selecting" what modules they want on
their system.

Selecting/enabling/installing a module doesn't necessarily
mean something will get installed on your system. I don't like
"install" much for that reason.

/me shrugs.

Until very recently, I thought install and enable were just
different verbs for the same action. I don't really understand
what "install" means now either. Could someone knowledgable
elaborate?

The installation profiles would list components that would
get installed if that particular profile was selected by the
user, for example with permanent configuration, GUI buttons or
command line options. These could also be used for [container]
image generation. Later we'd also like to extend these with
recipes for automatic component configuration.

System profiles are something else entirely -- they define what
modules and module variants ("streams"/"versions") should be
chosen when installing new content or [automatically] upgrading
your system. How exactly that would work isn't defined yet but
the idea is that you could select modules by their "API", their
life cycle, licenses or pretty much any metadata they provide.

So, before we start using ask for more things, I'd prefer it be in a
better place from a infrastructure point of view at least.

Right now ask is running on RHEL6, using an old version of Django and
various other old bits.

The current plan was to wait until Aurélien gets mailman3/hyperkitty
all reviewed and in EPEL7. Then we can package up the newer askbot and
use the same Django 1.8 that mailman3 uses.

That said, upstream hasn't had a release in about 1.5 years.
There's a number of bugs and things that don't work that don't seem to
get much attention from upstream. (twitter integration, mailing daily
digests of questions/answers, etc)

We have been trying to setup a Fedora theme for... well, since we set
it up at first. There is now the latest attempt setup on stg:
https://ask.stg.fedoraproject.org/en/questions/

It's also not super clear how active the community is there. I see a
lot of "No answer" questions on the first page at least, so I am not
sure if it would work to try and get them to answer user problems and
file bugs. On the other hand, It doesn't hurt to try and see how it
goes. :)

What plan do you have for libp11 and engine_pkcs11?

Packaging guidelines state that packages SHOULD support PKCS#11 URIs if
they support using certificates/keys via a filename.

Which is made fairly trivial by libp11 and the engine. But only if it's
actually *present* for the version of OpenSSL that you're building

Thanks for the hints, I'll try to look into that over the weekend.
Are there any aarch64 machines available for Fedora developers (like
with arm and ppc64)? It'd really help in this case.

Right, so, this is part of the context for my idea above. There *isn't*
a triage team, but there *is* a community around Ask Fedora, and we
could build from that. It wouldn't be the same at all as previous
efforts to "bugzilla-garden"

There's a FTBFS for matplotlib even without the dep loop. The dep loop
is actually due to the FTBFS of matplotlib on the import, I can assist
in fixing this if someone who knows more about it can fix the FTBFS. I
suspect, but aren't 100% sure, the tests failure is due to an
assumption about memory page size of 4K, on aarch64 (for Fedora at
least) it's actually 64K.

It might be easier to do a scratch build for test against F-25
arm.koji.fedoraproject.org as all the deps are there and you can see
the actual failure.

Re: User Visible Terminology

2016-09-16 Thread Björn Persson
"Mary Clarke" wrote:
> * List-enabled: lists all enabled modules

If this is terminology to be displayed in a user interface, not
technical identifiers, then this hyphen is wrong. "List enabled" is a
verb applied to an object, and is a reasonable short form of "list all
enabled modules". "List-enabled" is a compound adjective that means
something like "enabled for listing". Presumably modules that aren't
list-enabled are omitted from the list.

> * Check-upgrade
> * Check-rebase

If these are supposed to mean "check whether something can be
upgraded/rebased", then these hyphens are also wrong. To "check-upgrade"
something means either to upgrade it in a "check" way, or else to first
check it and then upgrade it.

If, on the other hand, these terms can't contain spaces because they're
command line parameters, then they should be written in all lowercase.

And if I'm completely off base, then perhaps you should have provided a
little more context.

Enabling task-abicheck notification for all maintainers *by default*

2016-09-16 Thread Dodji Seketeli
Hello fine fellows,

There recently was another incompatible ABI change in a core library in
Fedora. This did spark a lot of discussions, especially in the thread
at
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/de...@lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/MCYGMG24GAHGUD2AUACL45MFGXSSR4OR/.

The good news is that incompatible ABI change was caught by our
task-abicheck task.

The less good news is nobody got aware of the result of the task because
the maintainer was most likely not notified. Because by default,
notifications about the result of this task are turned off. And another
message to the thread I mentionned above shows that it's not that easy
to turn those notifications on without making any mistake:
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/de...@lists.fedoraproject.org/message/J4IBLB3PMBCN4J4EQQCBEQZ4HSADMRIY.

I guess my point is that experience is showing us that if this kind of
notification is not enabled by default, people are just not aware of it.

I am thus proposing that notifications about the results of
task-abicheck that are either NEEDS_INSPECTION or FAILED be sent to
maintainers of the relevant packages *by default*.

There is also a proposal about making Bodhi to block the automatic push
of a given build to the stable repository *if* the task-abicheck result
for that build is either NEEDS_INSPECTION or FAILED. I obviously agree
with this latest proposal, of course. But I think it should come in
*addition* to making maintainers aware of (possible) incompatible ABI
changes of their packages *early*, at Koji build time, giving them a
chance to fix things before they reach the Bodhi stage.

What do you think?

The sphinx documentation could be skipped: the documentation is probably
available on the web anyway. Or one could patch out the sphinx version
checks — sphinx is fairly backwards compatible and in my experience the
checks are always wrong.

So there's a dependency loop between python-matplotlib and
python-scikit-image (used by matplotlib for documentation). Building [1]
matplotlib w/o python-scikit-image (with_html 0) unfortunately results
in a test failure [2].

[1] http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=15658562
[2]
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/getfile?taskID=15658562=build.log=-4000

I wonder it it'd be more efficient to try to fix this with current
matplotlib-1.5.2-rc2
that we have in Fedora, or to move to matplotlib-2, which might already be
fixed…

Hi,

tl;dr: in case you see a similar message, I think it can be ignored for now.

A few days ago I got a whole bunch of similar messages, for many of my
python packages. matplotlib is a very standard and important module, so
I don't think it make sense to make support for it conditional.
It seems that Orion is trying to build python-matplotlib:
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=15643133, and it fails
because python-scikit-image is missing. But the dependency on scikit-image
can probably be made conditional… so matplotlib should become available
and this problem should go away soonish.

Good. s3cmd sems to have been superseded, at Amazon, by awscli.
Unfortunately, awscli is a !@#$!#@ to RPM bundle. I tried. The
difficulty is the chain of python module dependencies, each of which
have python module dependencies, and some of which have *conflicting*
python module dependencies. The conflicts apply especially to the
Sphinx versions used to build the documentation of different modules.

So s3cmd is going to be a necessary RPM until and unless that python
dependency hell for awscli is resolved, unless people are willing to
run "sudo pip install awscli" and accept possibly replacing working
RPM versions of python modules.

I've just gone to https://apps.fedoraproject.org/notifications/ to
make sure I have the relevant Taskotron notifcations enabled. I
didn't.

It's not at all simple to figure out what needs to be enabled. I found
the "Particular taskotron task outcome" rule which says:

The full list of supported outcomes can be found in the libtaskotron
documentation.

but the link gives a 404. Great. So I guessed that FAILED is what I
want. But Dodji tells me that's wrong and I need
FAILED,NEED_INSPECTION.

The inline text for the rule should be updated to mention
NEED_INSPECTION and/or the link to the docs should be fixed so we can
actually read the docs.

Given how hard it is to enable those notifications correctly, we
should just enable them by default for everyone. Or at least for
anyone maintaining a critpath package (which are the only ones being
abichecked today anyway).

Orphaning python-lirc package

2016-09-16 Thread SAL

  More info in this bug:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1360753

I think this package should retire, but if anyone interested, a new
package should be reviewed to replace this one.

I would like to take this, but I have one question about the
versioning. The actual 0.2.90 version is broken anyway and needs some
patches(backports to work, at least on 24. If I remember correctly,
it's the same on 23.
The current git revision (with the grilo-plugin) is internally bumped
to 0.2.91, but not official released.
Whart would be the best way for the versioning ?
A 0.2.90 post-release with checkout date and probably git-hash and
increase release-number or a 0.2.91 pre-release (also with date and
git-hash) ?

I think the pre-release scheme is correct here

Dan

It is just Vincent now because chpe removed himself in commit
d738f13028a3512f6f7650dbc91c524b23dc25c8. :) Since Vincent
moved on to other projects in 2012, and the last real code commit
was in early 2011, I think it is safe to call it dead.

I think we should drop xchat-gnome since hexchat is a worthy
replacement.
