U.S. rural areas? :-D

Are we talking about the DVDs being useful in areas with no internet
at all, or just slow internet? And would an optical specific Live
Workstation spin for Ambassadors be a useful work around?

koschei failed dep resolution

2016-10-10 Thread Orion Poplawski

For a number of packages, koschei is now showing:

 Package resolution failed package
texlive-collection-basic-5:svn41149-8.20160520.fc26.1.noarch requires
xdvik, but none of the providers can be installed

I'm not sure what the issue is here. My rawhide machine is down at the
moment. My EL7 machine with mock/yum can install
texlive-collection-base and xdvik just fine.

Is this an actual issue with texlive? With DNF? With koschei (which as
I understand it at least at one point had some custom DNF based code)?

the change from glibc cause OpenEXR to fail on Rawhide repository

Re: Installation validation test change proposal: merge USB tests into 'default boot and install', add more environment columns

2016-10-10 Thread Thomas Gilliard

On 10/10/2016 03:48 PM, Kevin Kofler wrote:

Matthew Miller wrote:

This is already a problem. We're giving away DVDs because it's
something to give away, not because it's what people really still want.
We need to find out some other take-homes that people find
useful and desirable *anyway*.

Based on feedback from Ambassadors, DVD images may still be useful
giveaways in regions with less access to bandwidth. I'm not sure what
to do about that.

My experience from the yearly Vienna Linux Week is that demand for DVDs has
been dropping significantly for the last couple years. It was still high for
1-2 years when the demand in the US had already dropped, but notebooks
without an optical drive have since become commonplace here too. (You CAN
still get a notebook with an optical drive if you really want around here,
but it is not the standard anymore.) That said, the demand might still be
non-zero. We did not have any Fedora media to give out this year (there
wasn't even a Fedora stand due to lack of personnel), so I do not have
precise data from this year.

What would be really great would be USB keys to hand out, but I guess the
prices for those are still too prohibitive. "USB burning stations" have also
not worked out all that well when they were tried at various events in the
past, though it might be worth retrying that these days. Having a reliable
nondestructive way to transfer Fedora onto a USB key would help there,
though. At least I really wouldn't feel well about just erasing every USB
stick I am handed over, nor would I have the time to check every stick I am
given with the owner (nor would I want to peek around in the owner's data to
begin with).

This sounds like a use for https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/MultiWriter

Most pure-python packages nowadays support 2.x and 3.x from the same
codebase (at least "libraries", this not true for some "leaf" programs).
So if you are lucky and don't need any complied python modules, simply
adding site-packages from a similar version to PYTHONPATH should be
enough.

And anyway, once you have python running, then you have pip, and
bootstrapping is significantly easier.

Pointing out the contradiction contributes to the discussion that it points
out that the claimed guarantees that you will not end up with the old
Pythons without installing them explicitly are blatantly false if there will
be exceptions to the "no dependencies on those packages" rule.

So far I've had to deal with three small factor PCs with not enough
USB ports and no PS/2 ports for mouse and keyboard. One of them needed
a USB port for a GSM dongle, the other for a WiFi adapter and the
third for a USB2Ethernet adapter. All of them had optical drives. I
did an offline installation for two of them and the other without a
mouse. Had I known beforehand, I would have taken a hub with me, or a
DVD. Also, on some systems, not all USB ports can be used at boot;
they do have power, but no data signals- I don't know why, could be a
firmware issue, but only some of them function around POST.
Afterwards, they work normally. In most such cases, not having a DVD
is an inconvenience, but not an insurmountable one.

> 2) What do we do about handouts (giving away media at conferences)?

There are many dirt cheap flash drives around, with painfully low
write speeds, almost decent read speeds and when they are not DOA,
they can usually survive an installfest. On the plus side, they can be
ordered with a fedora logo or engraving at no extra cost.

There is no need to keep broken deprecated stuff in fedora repositories. If
somebody really wants to use this, use a COPR. Or use the distro with
conservative risky update policy you are developing against (CentOS, RHEL,

Based on your other message elsewhere in the thread, I promise not to
pull you or anyone else in QA under the bus, but I mght drag Jan
Kurik with me as FPGM. Jan, what do you think about doing a Lightweight
Critical Issues Review Meeting every, say, two weeks? We could start it
with you and me and anyone else who wants to show up, and give it a
hard limit of half an hour.

Adam, if we do that, would it be hard to add to the existing
blockerbugs app, so we don't need to stand up new infrastructure?

Then we could try it for a bit and see if it is working / helpful or
just another crazy idea.

I can't think of in the Fedora case. I can image some situations where
install media is mandated to be read-only, but I doubt it's Fedora
being installed in those situations. The only other one I can think of
is "we've always done it that way", which I guess shouldn't be taken
completely for granted.

GRUB's syslinuxcfg command is called from an existing grub.cfg, so
using extlinux.conf files do not obviate the need for grub.cfg.
syslinuxcfg pretty much just parses for boot menu entries in the
extlinux.conf file and merges them with its own boot menu entries.

At the moment, I expect this to be broken because, again, Fedora's
GRUB depends on commands linuxefi/linux16 and initrdefi/initrd16,
which no one else uses as far as I know. Not upstream or other
distros. I do not know why this detail goes in the configuration file
rather than being substituted in code based on what firmware the
system has - it seems the other distros do it that way. But this seems
surmountable.

However...

OK so there are a few things:

1. The information needed to present boot options, the "menu entries",
are a separate thing from the bootloader specific configuration file
and file format. And yet all the bootloaders out there conflate these
two things, and make the problem of cross compatibility more
difficult.

2. The most important and useful part of bootloader spec is splitting
them out. A standardized boot menu entry file, and file format, as
drop-in snippets, which is "loosely based" on the GRUB 1 grub.conf
format. It's just menu entries, and quite simple.

3. The result is bootloader specific configuration files becomes
static, non-changing and don't need to contain boot entries (although
it's not disallowed). And individual boot menu drop in scripts are how
new boot entries are added. The bootloader then merges them together.

4. An issue with using syslinux's format, as well as the original
bootloader spec format, and a major source of disagreement, is the
assumption that the kernel and initrd are on the same file system as
the bootloader and its configuration file. No cross volume hopping.
This is necessary to avoid putting the kernel and initrd on the EFI
System partition, and causing a lot of installation grief with how to
deal with dual boot support.

Anyway, regardless of what format you want to base things on, it
probably should be a superset of the menu entry functions, including a
way to specify volumes by device designation, LVM, or volume UUID, or
now your format isn't actually compatible with GRUB on UEFI as well as
a bunch of less common scenarios.

Quitting cold turkey sounds better than switching from active to
passive testing (only block if someone finds a failure), because all
it takes to block release is a last minute "can't boot this" bug.

Maybe it's practical to only support optical boot on either Lives or
netinstalls (and by extension server DVD). I'd say block on
netinstalls, just becase those can fit on either a DVD or CD, and
desktops and servers are more likely to still have optical drives.
Laptops just don't anymore for the most part. Part of why is dropping
DVD playback support in Windows 8 and 10. To get DVD playback support
now you have to buy the software separate from the OS. Licensing fees.

You can use Koschei to narrow down package changes which could've caused
this.

Using optical media feels so dirty, though I guess it does give me an excuse to
use up that tower of blank discs. Thank goodness for in-place Fedora upgrades.

Blender failed to build on rawhide

2016-10-10 Thread Luya Tshimbalanga
Blender recently fails to build on rawhide as test via scratch build:
koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=16032906

It seems somehow OpenEXR is broken according to the build.log

However, the build is successful on Fedora 25
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=16033093

Can someone help investigating the root cause of the issue?

On a tangent, reading that triggered some thoughts about how linux
systems are organized. They seem to still be structured as if linux
was monolithic like the historical proprietary unix flavors it emulates.
It makes no sense to structure a system like that when it is composed of
changeable packages, is updated regularly, and can shrink or grow.

In combination with the concept of modularity I read about in another
email today, it would make a lot more sense to have something
like a /usr/pkgs directory where every installed package has a
directory, and put etc, share, man, bin?, lib64? ... under that
directory. i.e. every package is modular. To satisfy traditional
software, a symbolic, or hard, link could be inserted
in /usr/bin, /usr/lib64, /etc, /usr/share/man, etc.

Just an idea, thought I'd throw it out there. Might be completely
unworkable.

Nevertheless, at the link that I posted before, you can see for yourself the
exact use case, so that should make things clear enough. Contradictory or not
(as I said maybe the original descriptions possibly need to be rephrased),
arguing about that does not really contribute anything to the discussion.

Hm, the keyword is already listed in the desktop file, but that doesn't
do any good because all the desktop files are marked NoDisplay=true.

But it's found by the control-center search provider. That should be on
by default, did you turn it off?

If no package is allowed to require the old Pythons (and IMHO, "Recommends:"
is "require"), that also applies to tox. If tox is allowed to recommend the
old Pythons, that invalidates the claim that they will never be dragged in
as dependencies. What tox uses the old Pythons for does not change anything
to the contradiction.

Yes. The hint that "this passphrase is weak" is very useful. But
enforcing any policy is just too inflexible. I just tried to explain
(unsuccessfully) to a kid (2nd grade, so any "strong" password would
simply be immediately forgotten) why she cannot change the password in
the gnome dialogue, and it was a total waste of time.

(In addition, typing "password" in the gnome search box does *not*
lead to something that allows you to change your password, one needs
to search for "users" instead…, but that's another story. If somebody
from the gnome team is listening, it would be great to tag "Users" with
"password" too.)

Well, that's not the only consideration though. There's two other
factors I can think of:

1) Are there still cases where an admin would want to use optical media
on a machine that *could* boot via USB, for legitimate reasons? (I
genuinely don't know the answer to this).

2) What do we do about handouts (giving away media at conferences)?

I've known for quite some time that livecd-tools was/is to be
replaced with livemedia-creator, but only now did I realize that lm-c
won't have persistent storage -- I simply have never had the time to
explore it. I'm extremely dependent on the persistent storage as my
whole day job revolves around making hundreds of little mostly-
stateless appliances for data collection purposes and has so since
F13 or so. These have been built with livecd-iso-to-disk and lots of
glue via specialized kickstarts and other custom packages. These
appliances leverage a stateless OS very robustness, but do expect
some persistent storage for their management. So the above certainly
caught my attention.

There's a slight misconception in the above.

livemedia-creator *creates the image files themselves*. We're not
talking about that in this thread. We're talking about the tools for
taking an image that's been created - whether by livecd-creator or
livemedia-creator or anything else - and writing them to a USB stick.

I'm fine with that and I think it matches my understanding/expectations. Do
one thing and do it we

The 'persistence' feature requires support both in the image itself and
in the tool used to write it. I believe livemedia-creator-produced
images are set up to support persistence, just like livecd-creator-
produced images were.

I suspect this "support within the image" overlaps with some of the glue to
which I referred. Once upon a time these live images auto-mounted their
backing storage (where the immutable squashfs image is kept). Then that
stopped working and I had to write an init service to do the same. Whether
that service is still needed or not, I haven't investigated -- it's been
working happily.

The issue here is that we are discussing what tools for *writing the
image to a USB stick* should be 'supported' / 'recommended' / whatever,
and we'd kinda like to drop livecd-iso-to-disk from that group, but it
is currently the only one of the 'write image to stick' tools which
supports persistence.

No-one's proposing dropping livecd-iso-to-disk entirely at present, so
you will still be able to attempt to write sticks with persistent
storage, but we are discussing effectively a downgrade in how much
testing it gets and how much we care if it's broken.

I'm fine with all that. I certainly don't expect Fedora to cater to my
specific needs, but I like to chime in now and then if it might help preserve
some feature that everyone might otherwise feel is unused.

It is worth noting that we've never formally tested the persistence
features in any case, so we would never have blocked a release for
'persistence doesn't work right' anyhow. But at present we do, by
policy, block the release if writing sticks with livecd-iso-to-disk
doesn't work.

No worries there. I/we've been testing it exhaustively. When I push an update
to hundreds a machines (most of which are headless/keyboard-less and ill-suited
for such attachments and work) that all deploy it autonomously, it has to "just
work". Though I would never suggest our mutation reflects what the real Fedora
is doing. [:-)]

Are there plans to get persistent storage capabilities into lm-c?

Also, after much work I managed to get my live ISO spins generated
out of a private Koji setup. I see there a warning "spin-livecd is
deprecated and will be replaced with spin-livemedia" -- I assume this
related, true? If so, do any improvements to lm-c (say to add
persistence) automagically benefit the "spin-livemedia" method in
Koji?

Well, yeah. 'spin-livecd' is the Koji method for creating images with
livecd-creator; it's now deprecated and never used in the official
Fedora Koji instance, Fedora live images are all now created with the
'spin-livemedia' method. 'spin-livemedia' is the Koji method for
creating images with livemedia-creator.

So since what 'spin-livemedia' *does* is create a live image using
livemedia-creator, of course any changes to livemedia-creator will be
reflected when you create an image with the Koji 'spin-livemedia'
method.

Thanks for all the feedback Adam. I'll start playing around with
livemedia-creator to learn how my world needs to transform. It will be
interesting to see how this all dovetails with the stateless support[0] that
the systemd folks have (had?) been working on.

I think we should plan to drop out real optical disks sometime in the

Sometimes, that's something like the Rust compiler, which is just two
packages, but still significant.

I think a general rule of thumb is: something (even a single package)
makes a useful self-contained Change if it fits into our current
marketing story, advancing the Fedora Editions or a Fedora Objective.
Big changes to our alternate offerings make sense too: if there's a big
update to Xfce or KDE Plasma with a lot of user-facing benefits, this
is a great way to communicate it.

tox is THE main reason for multiple interpreters in Fedora.

So no the comments are not contradictory but it seems there is a lack of

tox is not just any package, so maybe it is not stressed out I guess from the

edk2-* packages are noarch. Secondary architectures should imho import
built binary packages into repository.

Qemu allows you to emulate several architectures on many architectures -
basically any Fedora supported one (primary or secondary) on any of them.

qemu-system-{x86,aarch64,arm,x86-64} may use UEFI binary to run VM.

Some time ago I was using virt-manager to test aarch64, arm, ppc64,
ppc64le, x86, x86-64 VMs on aarch64 and x86-64 hosts.

Thanks for the ping, but psycopg2 package should be on the client side only
(depends on libpq.so.5). Please ping me or submit a bug if you find an issue.

The reason for this is documented in edk2.spec.

# actual firmware builds support cross-compiling. edk2-tools
# in theory should build everywhere without much trouble, but
# in practice the edk2 build system barfs on archs it doesn't know
# (such as ppc), so lets limit things to the known-good ones.
ExclusiveArch: %{ix86} x86_64 %{arm} aarch64

I suppose that QEMU should not require edk2 on architectures other than
ARM and x86.

We will work on porting the dependent packages to the new API. If by
some reasonable deadline there are still some packages that are not
dead by other reasons and we are unable to port them we can add -devel
to the compat package. Note though that small changes in such packages
will be needed anyway as the include files of the compat package will
have to be in non-default include directory. (If the package doesn't
use pkgconfig to find the needed CFLAGS automatically.)

If you are a packager or qa or the like, the default is to have your
bugzilla account equal to the email you have associated with your
account in the fedora account system.

So, have you tried logging in with david.script...@gmail.com as the

It's a lot of empty fields, which can't be automated by definition. The new
matrix version seems to be more time consuming that the previous version. I
wonder what we can do to cut down the time spent on this. Here are a few ideas:

a) could we decouple boot from install?

I know we've had a few problems in the past that occurred only on bare metal
and not in VMs. But do I remember correctly that all of those were related to
booting the installer/live system, and not the installation? What we do here is
that we repeat the default installation over and over again, e.g. Workstation
Live using BIOS and UEFI (which results in a slightly different partition
layout), from different sources (DVD in VM, DVD on bare metal, USB). But do
those environments (VM vs bare metal, DVD vs USB) actually matter, is there a
good reason to repeat them that many times? What if we reduce all of this to:

Default install
===
Result
Workstation Live [ ]
Workstation netinst [ ]
Everything netinst [ ]
Server netinst [ ]
Server DVD [ ]
KDE Live [ ]

which would be satisfiable using ANY environment and it would just check that
anaconda can use that particular installation source correctly? The BIOS vs
UEFI partitioning is already covered thoroughly in the "Guided storage
configuration" table.

The currently proposed "Default boot and install" section would stay the same,
but be renamed to "Default boot" and would just check that the image *boots*
into the installer in that particular environment.

b) do we need to insist on performing the *default* install?

If the previous idea doesn't fly, this is another way to improve testing time.
For example, we're installing the Server package set 12 times in the currently
proposed table ((Server DVD + Server netinst) * environments). Is that really
necessary? What if we did it once (in any environment), and then could do just
a minimal install the remaining 11 times? Because installation takes most of
the time here, esp. from optical media. And I can't imagine how the
environments could differ in such a way that would break default installation
set just in a particular environment but not a different installation set in
the same environment (esp. when heavily pushing dd-like based approach).

So again we would have a table like this:

Default package set
===
Result
Workstation netinst [ ]
Server netinst [ ]
Server DVD [ ]

which would be satisfiable in any environment (we already have "Package sets"
section in which this would fit nicely), and in the "Default boot and install"
table you could choose a different package set for installation. We could go
even further and allow arbitrary partitioning to be used in "Default boot and
install", so that it can be combined with our partitioning test cases. Again,
that would allow us to test multiple features together and save time, while not
sacrificing the core thing to test here (running the particular medium in a
particular environment).

I mean build scripts in upstream tarballs, which can also end up in our
packages (and cause problems when building outside of mock), but which can
also be used directly by people.
