Re: IBM buying RedHat

2018-10-30 Thread John Coughlan
Yea - Does IBM have any plans on keeping, or discarding any of RH’s open source
efforts…like this one? Can we as a community still expect the same sort of, and
level of involvement post sale as we have enjoyed before hand from RH/IBM
employees?

So, for example, it is acceptable that
https://apps.fedoraproject.org/packages/ sends a
`access-control-allow-origin: *` header because it doesn't require
authentication, while BZ must use something more granular, doesn't it?

From what I see, if a bug is somehow restricted (like private bugs) BZ
will manage that with an error response in the json reply. For example:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/jsonrpc.cgi?method=Bug.get¶ms=[{%22ids%22:1641325}]

returns me a "You are not authorized to access" even if in the same
browser session I'm logged in in BZ and I can see the bug content in the
html view.

No it protects against unintended exfiltration of data from
the server - without it a random web page could have javascript
that did a background XHR to a web site that required authentication
and just wait until somebody happens to visit that page who happens
to have a valid session cookie for the target site.

Of course for non-GET requests this extends beyond exfiltration
to state altering operations, so that background script might place
an order or submit a new bug or whatever using your session cookie.

asked in the opened bug [3]?

Principally it needs to send Access-Control-Allow-Origin if it is
happy to allow the request - if the request requires unusual headers
then it might need to send the other one as well.

So allowing CORS access to resources that don't require authentication
is not normally a problem but allowing it to resources that do require
some sort of authentication requires that you trust the domain you are
allowing the access to.

So for BZ I guess the issue will be figuring out if any of the bugs
you are getting information on are restricted in any way? or maybe
that's fine if the bodhi user has access to those bugs and the domain
can just be validated to restrict it to bodhi?

help/info needed: Javascript and CORS - a bodhi <--> bugzilla communication problem

2018-10-30 Thread Mattia Verga
Hi,

I'm working on a Pull Request for Bodhi web interface to allow
retrieving bugs information when we try to attach them to an update.
This way we can do some checks on the bug we're trying to attach (is it
private? is it a Fedora or Fedora EPEL bug?...) and provide some useful
information in the update submission form.

The problem is that the ajax request to Bugzilla fails, because BZ
doesn't provide CORS headers. I've asked BZ guys [2] to add those
headers, but I'm a bit confused about how CORS works and I would need
some help from someone who may have a deeper knowledge on this.
Does the BZ server need to provide the `Access-Control-Allow-Headers`
header or the `Access-Control-Allow-Origin` header? Is it correct what I
asked in the opened bug [3]?

What type of security issue may arise with a wildcarded
`Access-Control-Allow-Headers: *` header? As I understand CORS, it's not
a server protection, rather a client protection. In fact, installing a
browser extension like CorsE for Firefox easily bypass that "protection"
and allows the script to run.
Am I wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Fedora 29 is available now!

2018-10-30 Thread Matthew Miller
Tomorrow is Halloween, but this week at the Fedora Project, we're
not scared of anything. Today, we officially release Fedora 29!

As always, this release is the result of the hard work of thousands
of people working in Fedora, and many times more working in all of
the upstream projects. Thank you and congratulations to everyone!

Self Introduction: Carmen

2018-10-30 Thread Carmen Bianca Bakker
Hi all,

The contribution guide thingamajig told me to post a short message
here. So as follows: I am Carmen from Friesland, The Netherlands. I am
currently working on GNOME to make the GNOME desktop available in
Esperanto. At the current rate, GNOME 3.32 will have its core release
(standard apps, core libraries) completely translated into Esperanto,
which I am fairly proud of :-)

Furthermore, I am a former intern of the Free Software Foundation Europe
where I worked on the REUSE Initiative (;). You
can find me at the FSFE booth at SFScon in Bozen/Bolzano, 16 November.

I am joining this list to make sure that `langpacks-eo` will become
available in Fedora 30. If someone knows some pointers for me there
while I (slowly) work on it, I would greatly appreciate those.

Thanks and with kindness,
Carmen

Hi Zbyszek,

I see the source of your confusion now. I seem to have chosen a poor
wording in that sentence.
This Change is about adding the _missing pieces_ to fedora, and fixing
show-stopper bugs.

The "TODO" list is the bullet points below the packaging status table,
under the "Scope" section. I'll add a separate heading for it or move
it to a new "TODO" section.

I already packaged the "missing" packages, they're available from my
decathorpe/elementary-staging COPR repository. I didn't want to open
review requests for them until I was sure that they work correctly on
fedora. I'm maintaining the .spec files for the "staging" packages in
this GitHub repository for now:
https://github.com/decathorpe/elementary-staging-rpms
I try to closely follow the Packaging Guidelines even for my COPR
packages, so moving them to fedora when they're ready should be a fast
process.

Both, but mainly 29. That's primarily caused by how the fedora and
elementaryOS releases lined up. I was able to push most non-backwards
compatible things to fedora 29 before the release today, but it would
have been way too late to announce an official "Pantheon" desktop for
fedora 29, since there's still some integration work needed.

Getting the components packaged and working on fedora was a multi-year
effort. So, I've tried to follow the relevant Updates Policy for
stable releases - since almost all components (especially the
applications) are independent, and can be used on their own. That's
the reason why the applications that contain non-backwards compatible
changes were not pushed to stable releases, but backwards-compatible
updates were pushed to all stable releases, where possible.

Yes. See the last three bullet point under "Scope".

The bug that locking the screen with light-locker on LightDM was
tracked on GitHub (it was opened before the packages were in stable
fedora). The screensaver / screen lock should now work in the LightDM
/ light-locker scenario.
https://github.com/decathorpe/elementary-stable-rpms/issues/9

There's no bug report for lacking screensaver support on GDM yet. I'll
open the necessary bug reports later today.

I'll also update the Change's wiki page with some clarifications.

This does not look like "broken dependencies" but just dependencies.

I'm a bit confused about the scope of this change, probably because I've
never used Pantheon. Is this change about "adding" or "upgrading"? IIUC,
some older versions are already packaged in Fedora. Could you add a more
concrete description of what will be considered a successful implementation
of this change for F30?

Also, if somebody wanted to help, is there a "TODO" list that one could look
at? Some packages are missing, but are there reviews for them, etc.
