Years ago when Tom Stellard started to package rocm things for Fedora I tried to
review some of the packages but found it really hard to tweak the sources/build
process to produce something acceptable to Fedora. I'd love to see this being
improved so I could use my GPU for smaller compute tasks.

Well I think OpenCL would be a good starting point since it's been around for a
while and lots of applications use it.

Fedora already has some of the base components already (hsakmt, rocm-runtime,
llvm). For OCL, fedora would just need:
- ROCm-Device-Libs (bitcode compiled by LLVM, needed to upgrade rocm-runtime to
the latest version)
- ROCm-CompilerSupport (LLVM plugin, used for runtime compilation)
- ROCclr (a middle layer that does the generic compute work)
- ROCm-OpenCL-Runtime (the opencl frontend for rocclr)

2021-12-16 Thread Jeremy Newton
Yeah I think the technical leads are mostly on board with following FHS as
close as possible, which is an obvious plus for Fedora.

I think the biggest issue is the scale of the problem, and it almost feel likes
they need to work component by component, but [2] will definitely be fixed for
all components once they're done assessing everything.

I think the thing I've been advocating for is to use GNUInstallDirs [4] as much
as possible, which works really well with Fedora's cmake macros and other
distro scripts.

If you have any other complaints, please let me know, and I can try to advocate
for them. Unfortunately I work on the graphics side, so I'm not well versed in
the ROCm github and the known issues.

F36 Change: DIGLIM (System-Wide Change proposal)

2021-12-16 Thread Ben Cotton
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/DIGLIM

== Summary ==
Digest Lists Integrity Module (DIGLIM) provides a repository of file
digests from authenticated sources, such as RPM headers, to be used by
kernel services for remote attestation and/or secure boot at
application level.

== Owner ==
* Name: [[User:robertosassu| Roberto Sassu]]
* Email: roberto.sa...@huawei.com

== Detailed Description ==
Integrity Measurement Architecture (IMA), a kernel service for remote
attestation and secure boot at application level, has been integrated
in the kernel since a long time. However, two main barriers limited
its wide adoption. First, it extends a Platform Control Register (PCR)
of the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) in an unpredictable way (due to
parallel execution of software), making it impossible to use that PCR
for sealing policies of TPM keys. Second, it requires that a file
signature is added to the package header for each file to be
appraised.

Digest Lists Integrity Module (DIGLIM) takes a different approach. It
allows IMA to extend a PCR in a predictable way or to verify the
authenticity of files by querying an in-kernel repository of
authenticated reference values, built from information already
available in existing packages (FILEDIGESTS section of the RPM header,
with signature in the RSAHEADER section). Data source authentication
does not require additional key management. With support for PGP keys
in the kernel, the official Fedora PGP keys can be imported to the
builtin keyring of the kernel and used to verify the PGP signature of
the RPM headers.

DIGLIM is not specifically tied to IMA. Since it is based on the hash
table implementation of the kernel, it can store data of different
types or be used by other kernel subsystems. It might for example
store fsverity digests, to achieve the goal of another proposed
[//fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/FsVerityRPM change] with less
overhead (by adding to the RPM header digests instead of signatures).
It might also be used by other kernel services, such as
[//lore.kernel.org/linux-security-module/1634151995-16266-1-git-send-email-deven.de...@linux.microsoft.com/
Integrity Policy Enforcement (IPE)], a new LSM being proposed for
inclusion in the upstream kernel.

A preliminary performance evaluation showed that DIGLIM does not
introduce a significant overhead. A repository of executables and
shared libraries digests, of a Fedora 33 minimal installation,
occupies less than 800k of memory.

The new feature behaves as follows. A modified kernel with the DIGLIM
patches will expose to user space an interface to add/remove file
digests from the kernel hash table. A user space parser, executed by
the kernel during early boot, parses RPM headers found in /etc/diglim
in the initial ram disk (included with a custom dracut script) and
uploads them to the kernel. When a file is accessed, IMA calculates
the file digest and queries it with DIGLIM. If the digest is found,
measurement is skipped and appraisal is successful. If the digest is
not found, a measurement of the file is performed and appraisal fails.
When packages are installed or removed, the kernel hash table is kept
synchronized with a new rpm plugin.

== Feedback ==
DIGLIM has been proposed some time ago, and was previously known as
IMA Digest Lists.

The original implementation was found to be too invasive, as both the
management of the repository of reference values and the new
measurement and appraisal mechanisms based on the query of the
repository needed to coexist with the existing code. DIGLIM is now
implemented as a standalone module, which includes the repository
management part, and exposes a simple API so that IMA and other kernel
services can use it to implement the query part (much simpler).

At the time IMA Digest Lists was published, the proposal of adding
file signatures to the package header was deemed to be more mature and
suitable for adoption. From [//pagure.io/fesco/issue/2547 previous]
and
[//lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/de...@lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/JE2HGLJMLEKUJW3YBP6MQJWP43CSTC57/
current] discussions, it seems that Linux distribution vendors are a
bit reluctant to make such change, especially due to the increased
size of the packages. DIGLIM just requires a modification of the
kernel, rpm and dracut, and could work on old distribution versions
once the modified packages are installed.

Another remote attestation-specific issue is that the approach of
measuring only unknown software reduces the amount of information
available to remote verifiers for the integrity evaluation of the
system being attested. In particular, a measurement list made with the
DIGLIM approach does not show which file have been actually accessed
and when. This tradeoff was chosen to make the PCR value extended with
software measurements predictable and to allow the usage of sealing
policies based on that PCR.

== Benefit to Fedora ==
The main benefits of DIGLIM have been elaborated

1.18 is scheduled to be released in February 2022.
Due to Go packages' current nature and state, the rebuild of dependent
packages will be required.

== Benefit to Fedora ==
Stay closely behind upstream by providing the latest release of Go,
which includes improved support of the risc-v processor architecture
and added support for aarch64 based darwin(macOS) machines, among
other bug fixes, enhancements and new features. For a complete list of
changes, see upstream change notes at
https://tip.golang.org/doc/go1.18 . Therefore Fedora will be providing
a reliable development platform for Go language and projects written
in it.

== Scope ==
* Proposal owners: Rebase Golang package in Fedora 36, help resolve
possible issues found during package rebuilds.
* Other developers: Fix possible issues, with help from Golang maintainers.
* Release engineering: Rebuild of dependent packages as part of
planned mass-rebuild.
* Policies and guidelines: N/A
* Trademark approval: N/A

== Upgrade/compatibility impact ==
None

== How To Test ==
;0.
:a) Install golang 1.18 from rawhide and use it to build your
application(s)/package(s).
:b) Scratch build against rawhide.
;1.
:Your application/package built using golang 1.18 should work as expected.

== User Experience ==

None

== Dependencies ==

Omitted due to the number of packages listed ~1600.

Not all of listed require re-build as they might not ship binaries
and/or do not use golang compiler during build, but only use Go rpm
macros that pull it in to every build root.

== Contingency Plan ==
* Contingency mechanism:Reverting to golang version 1.16.X if
significant issues are discovered.
* Contingency deadline: Beta Freeze(?)
* Blocks release? No
* Blocks product? No

There is not. dm-verity is the only solution to that that I am aware of in
Linux. dm-verity also solves the problem that someone could tamper with
the block device and exploit a vulnerability in the kernel's filesystem
drivers.

NetBSD’s Veriexec has a neat solution to this problem, but it is
significantly more complicated. It uses additional metadata to validate a
file.

The obvious solution to the second problem is some form of measured boot:
if the feature is disabled, it shows up in the system measurements, and
access to various secrets may be denied by the TPM. Android uses a similar
solution: at least on Google Pixel devices, one can unlock the bootloader,
but doing so erases all data on the device.

+1 on this. There have also been bugs in RPM's handling of IMA signatures,
and fs-verity signature handling could have similar issues. Since IMA and
fs-verity signatures are currently stored in the signature header, they can
be modified without changing the package signature, so they increase the
attack surface of RPM.

 You can vendor only sources. No prebuilt assets are allowed.

If some of the dependencies are unnecessary, the package maintainers
could patch the code to not use them, and send the patches upstream.
That said, this really needs to be solved at the NPM level, by having
NPM packages include machine-extractable source code.

In any case, node_modules is not source code, since it is not “the
preferred form of the work for making modifications to it.” (quoting
LGPLv2.1 here, but I believe Fedora uses an equivalent definition).
The question then becomes whether it is more like bundling a prebuilt
binary, which is not acceptable, or like the bundling of the output
of lex, yacc, or pandoc in autotools-generated tarballs, which I
consider fine. One distinction might be whether the output files are
portable and can be automatically regenerated, which is invariably
true in the latter case.

F36 Change: DIGLIM (System-Wide Change proposal)

2021-12-16 Thread Ben Cotton
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/DIGLIM

== Summary ==
Digest Lists Integrity Module (DIGLIM) provides a repository of file
digests from authenticated sources, such as RPM headers, to be used by
kernel services for remote attestation and/or secure boot at
application level.

== Owner ==
* Name: [[User:robertosassu| Roberto Sassu]]
* Email: roberto.sa...@huawei.com

== Detailed Description ==

== Feedback ==

From [//pagure.io/fesco/issue/2547 previous]
and
[//lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/JE2HGLJMLEKUJW3YBP6MQJWP43CSTC57/
current] discussions, it seems that Linux distribution vendors are a
bit reluctant to make such change, especially due to the increased
size of the packages.

== Benefit to Fedora ==
The main benefits of DIGLIM have been elaborated

Recent python-pytest-cov update in F34/F35 causes many FTBFS

2021-12-16 Thread Ben Beasley
It looks like python-pytest-cov was recently updated to 3.0.0 in F35[1]
and F34[2]. I noticed this because, between my own packages and those
maintained through @neuro-sig, I saw a wave of FTBFS notifications from
Koschei.

Unfortunately, because packages commonly pin a particular major version,
and because pytest-cov has been in 2.x for a long time, a huge number of
packages are likely to be affected.

It would be nice if Koschei could build against updates-testing so that
problems like this could be more easily detected before the updates have
already reached stable.

Subject: Initial import (perl-IO-FDPass-1.1-3)

This small low-level module only has one purpose: pass a file descriptor to

Mock v2.16 release, mock-core-configs v36.4

2021-12-16 Thread Pavel Raiskup
Hello!

I'm glad I can announce that we have a new release of Mock. See the full
release notes [1]. The major change that happened is the removal of
'epel-8' config files, as a follow-up for [2] discussion (and of course on
*devel lists, big thanks to everyone for the discussion).

Note that this is is the last v2 release being shipped to all supported
Fedora/EPEL versions. From now on, we'll move to v3 with development (in
'main' branch) and EPEL 7 stays on v2 (in 'mock-2' branch, bugfix only).

[EPEL-devel] Heads-up: trousers (TPM 1.2) silently orphaned

2021-12-16 Thread Michel Alexandre Salim
Hi all,

`trousers` got silently orphaned around the time an EPEL9 branch for it
was requested: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2032258

Looks like we're slowly uncoupling ourselves from it, e.g.

- for ARM, uboot-tools no longer pulls in vboot-utils which pulls in
  trousers:
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/scm-comm...@lists.fedoraproject.org/message/JAAC32MNLJMMENVJG7QUSKHGZFABLUHX/

- Neal disabled TPM/TSS 1.2 support in strongswan, dropping the trousers
  dependency, in https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/strongswan/pull-request/13

but there are several dependencies still around (strongswan still shows
up here as the PR just got merged a few hours ago)

```
Do we want to keep trousers in Fedora? If so someone who needs it should
probably step up, if not, we should toggle it off in these packages.
Re: Any interest in ROCm packaging?
2021-12-16 Thread Ben Beasley
I maintain the now-deprecated pure-Python “rocm-smi” package, and I’ve
looked a few times at packaging rocm_smi_lib[1] to replace it, but the
kinds of distro-friendliness issues you mention, e.g. [2][3], have so
far been more than I was willing to work around.
I was also partially dissuaded by a general sense (which may or may not
be accurate) that the main ROCm project’s issue tracker is dominated on
both the filing and the responding side by high-volume end-user support
questions, while the individual component projects have mostly technical
bug reports but don’t always seem to have anyone reliably looking at them.
I’m happy to collaborate on work in this area as I am able,
particularly—from a selfish perspective—if it leads to a maintainable
rocm_smi_lib without too many downstream hacks, or if it eventually
enables GPGPU in Darktable and/or BOINC without proprietary or
unpackaged software. I think a lot of people would be *very* excited
about that, if it is possible.
I think that'd be awesome -- and those internal clean-ups are really
appreciated. Having the infrastructure there is nice, but I'm also curious:
are there any application-level tools that are in Fedora Linux already or
which could be packaged, to serve as a showcase for the technology?
I was not aware of fedora-create-review.  Thank you for mentioning it.
Speaking of which. I am guilty of branching a bunch of python packages
in 2019 for EPEL-8 which the python team did not plan to maintain. I
need to take responsibility and be made the maintainer of those or
have them removed from EPEL-8.
You can close the ticket that's no longer needed.
But I agree, it is not "good behaviour" to open duplicate package
review tickets without asking the previous submitter.
Among other reasons, this is why I started to use fedora-create-review
(from the fedora-review package) to submit my Package Review tickets,
because it checks if a review request for the package already exists,
before submitting a new one.
We use this in production, and those kind of constraints are just not enough,
because there's too many obvious ways around them. What we needed is for the
kernel to enforce that only signed code shall run, and thus IPE was born, so
that when coupled with dm-verity/fs-verity it allows to enforce a policy like
that.
I don't feel confident in supporting mod_perl in EPEL9. If you need that
package there, I can give you permissions and you can maintain it there
yourself. What's your FAS username?
It's default on Fedora 35, isn't it? Please file a bug at
I'll file a ticket (if someone was not faster).
I am afraid it is not default on neither F35 or F36.
CPE Weekly Update – Week of December 13th – 17th
2021-12-16 Thread Vipul Siddharth
Hi everyone,
This is a weekly report from the CPE (Community Platform Engineering)
Team. If you have any questions or feedback, please respond to this
report or contact us on #redhat-cpe channel on libera.chat
(https://libera.chat/).
If you wish to read this in form of a discourse post (or on our
commblog), check the post on discussion.fp.o:
https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/cpe-weekly-update-week-of-december-13th-17th/
# Highlights of the week
## Infrastructure & Release Engineering
Goal of this Initiative
---
Purpose of this team is to take care of day to day business regarding
CentOS and Fedora Infrastructure and Fedora release engineering work.
It’s responsible for services running in Fedora and CentOS
infrastructure and preparing things for the new Fedora release
(mirrors, mass branching, new namespaces etc.). The ARC (which is a
subset of the team) investigates possible initiatives that CPE might
take on.
Update
--
### Fedora Infra
* Log4j CVE affects our Openshift 3, mitigated via
[fix](https://access.redhat.com/solutions/6578441)
* Deployed an Openshift Dedicated cluster on AWS still deciding
* Lots of spam cleared off mailing lists
### CentOS Infra including CentOS CI
* Various activities/preparation for CentOS Linux 8 EOL process
* Proposal for SIGs to [switch to
RHEL8](https://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-devel/2021-December/098779.html)
* Preparing needed steps to clear content and remove it from mirrorlist
* WIP for Meta group for SIGs, allowing to build+push their -release
pkgs (not having to depend on CentOS Stream team for this)
* Investigating [openshift template
issue](https://pagure.io/centos-infra/issue/555) for newer deployed
projects and jenkins
* Log4j CVE impact analysis (impacting OCP 4 if Elasticsearch is used,
which we are not using)
* Stream MVBE infra : renewal process for internal TLS cert
## CentOS Stream
Goal of this Initiative
---
This initiative is working on CentOS Stream/Emerging RHEL to make this
new distribution a reality. The goal of this initiative is to prepare
the ecosystem for the new CentOS Stream.
Updates
---
* Dealing with a slowdown in rpm signing
* Continuing the development Content Resolver enhancements
* Various cleanup and docs work at various places
## CentOS Duffy CI
Goal of this Initiative
---
Duffy is a system within CentOS CI Infra which allows tenants to provision and
access bare metal resources of multiple architectures for the purposes of
CI testing.
We need to add the ability to checkout VMs in CentOS CI in Duffy. We have
OpenNebula hypervisor available, and have started developing playbooks which
can be used to create VMs using the OpenNebula API, but due to the current state
of how Duffy is deployed, we are blocked with new dev work to add the
VM checkout functionality.
Updates
---
* Foundation for background tasks in place
* Started work on authentication and the session workflow
* CLI polish
## OSCI – Distrobaker monitoring
Goal of this Initiative
---
This initiative is to improve the Distrobaker monitoring to monitor
side-tags and module builds. Distrobaker is a service which rebuilds
the CentOS 9 Stream Koji builds for RHEL 9 in Brew.
Updates
---
* added a barebones implementation of gathering side tag metrics
## EPEL
Goal of this initiative
---
Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux (or EPEL) is a Fedora Special
Interest Group that creates, maintains, and manages a high quality set
of additional packages for Enterprise Linux, including, but not
limited to, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), CentOS and Scientific
Linux (SL), Oracle Linux (OL).
EPEL packages are usually based on their Fedora counterparts and will
never conflict with or replace packages in the base Enterprise Linux
distributions. EPEL uses much of the same infrastructure as Fedora,
including buildsystem, bugzilla instance, updates manager, mirror
manager and more.
Updates
---
* No updates - team on time offs
Kindest regards,
CPE Team
