Re: Fedora 34 Change: GitRepos-master-to-main (Self-Contained Change)
I haven't read the whole thread but I cannot believe everybody just went with it. What is the practical purpose of changing master to main? I see no benefit whatsoever. We're only making this politicized. I haven't checked the tickets but I'd bet my left arm on us not having a single ticket from an individual telling us they were discouraged to participate in any of our projects due to our use of "master" in git. This, for me, is beyond ridiculous but, even more incredible that nobody dared to lift their arm against it. This isn't helping anyone. It's just succumbing to political pressure. And here I was thinking that people here wouldn't have it. I, for one, totally disagree with this change. Especially for the reasons it's being done. ___ devel mailing list -- devel@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to devel-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org Do not reply to spam on the list, report it: https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure

I think we should make a serious and great effort to put the users first remind us of this in every breaking decision we make. For example, in Fedora 31, we don't have docker out of the box; though, podman is awesome. This is a good example of how we ask that users align into, often awesome, new technology paradigms, but it breaks user's environments and it takes more work to make Fedora your main OS. This is why we have, in every release, so many articles and scripts that "fix" Fedora, so that the user doesn't have to. Making sure we don't break the user's experience is key, IMHO. Making sure that software doesn't break is key as well. Things should just work. Also, we should through some configuration help there as well; not provide stuff as vanilla as we have for years. For example, just recently, the nginx configuration took into account php-fpm (as an example that comes to mind). For several releases, one had to do this manually. We should provide an environment that welcomes 3rd parties. We want companies to make Fedora their go-to distro. Wouldn't be awesome that docker showed examples of how to do stuff in Fedora first; rather than Ubuntu? Same goes for k8s, raspberry pi, Bring the companies and the companies will bring the users. That's what I can think of right now, hehe. ___ devel mailing list -- devel@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to devel-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org

Re: Rolling release model philosophy (was Re: Anaconda is totally trashing the F18 schedule (was Re: f18: how to install into a LVM partitions (or RAID)))
I think we could, just for fun if you like, pursue making a good plan of how the transition would be and what changes should be done. Consider it objectively. What changes would have to be done the OS? What changes in infrastructure? What tools do we need? This could be a good exercise. The wiki might be a nice place to do it. How about that? As a sysadmin, I'd love to be able to update to a certain point in time. Like in git, you can just checkout a tag... Wouldn't it be awesome to be able to update to a certain tag? Heh, one could even have spin tags, hehe. Also, having the package manager give you warnings, pointers, suggestions and general messages would rock. Keeping it simple and objective, IMHO, MariaDB is the natural choice. It has a community, it's GPL and it's not Oracle... Besides, it is faster and nicer (It has some cool engines). XtreemFS on Fedora
Hello guys! I'm interested in packaging XtreemFS for Fedora. They're BSD and the project pretty good; even if it's java-based; it works fine with openjdk. It's a EU project, it seems. I'm not proficient in java but I have been using this one and know it well. And, besides, the developers are very friendly and all. They, also, have RPMs for F16: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/xtreemfs/Fedora_16/ I'd love it if somebody proficient in java would join to help co-maintain.
