Taking 8.2-763 On The Road

2008-09-25 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi All,

Last night I was successful in updating my test machine (the one with the
repaired keyboard) to build 8.2-763 and updated all the needed Activities and
added the Help Activity. It was a "piece of cake," now that I know how to do
it.

I was very pleased to find the FLOSS manual in the help activity...available
without internet access (I turned off my router to test it). It was fun to see
the few words I had contributed to it on the XO!

Tomorrow (Thursday) morning we will be leaving to return to California. It
will take us most of the rest of this week. I plan to "field" test it as we
go, using internet connections in motels and other locations. I will also be
traveling to an area in Nevada (Great Basin NP) where there is no internet and,
probably, no cell phone service.

So I will have the opportunity to play NuB with no connections. Let's see how
it goes!

BTW, this new build is very nice. If you haven't downloaded a developer key
yet, you should do it and join in the testing of this build. The better we can
help make it before it ships, the fewer problem calls we will have from our new
donors this winter!

Music Keyboard for TamTam?

2008-11-16 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi,

I was wondering if there would be a way to connect a usb musical keyboard to
the XO to use with the TamTam suite of Activities?

The
software would have to be able to recognize the input from the
keyboard. A small 37-key midi keyboard by M-Audio costs about $50.
. It supposedly works with any
computer with a usb connection, but I suspect they mean any Mac or Windows
based machine.

The
programs in the TamTam suite are really powerful, and could appeal to
older children and adults if the keyboard input was more suited to
their larger hands.

Any ideas?

I'm not on your mailing list so please just cc your answer to:

RE: Music Keyboard for TamTam?

2008-11-17 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi Gary,

I'm glad others are interested in this possible extension of the use of the XO.
I got the idea when I saw the OLPCMEXICO guide to TamTamMini. They show the
correspondence of the XO keys with a standard keyboard. You don't need to know
Spanish to understand what they are showing. You can download their guide here:

http://www.mochiladigitaltelmex.com.mx/olpc/index.php/Herramientas_pedag%C3%B3gicas

Greg Smith was the speaker at our Support-Gang conference call meeting today.
He indicated that we can submit ideas for additions to the next release, 9.1.0,
to come out in March. I was going to submit the keyboard input fix in his
Roadmap section:

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Feature_roadmap

Would you like to join me as "co-champions" of the idea? You can submit it and
include me, or I can do it and include you, whichever you prefer. We can each
go over the proposal and edit collaboratively (OLPC style!).

I think the educational value is great. Children can be learning a standard
keyboard as they play with the TamTam suite and it will transfer to other
instruments they may want to try later in life...not just piano and organ, but
mallet instruments like marimba as well.

Do you have any idea how well in tune the XO is? If you play an A is it 440?
If it is in tune, it can also help children develop an excellent sense of pitch
that will help them all their lives (a survey of adults with perfect pitch
showed they all began playing an instrument by the age of 8...my Master's
Thesis many years ago!).

Let's see where we can take this...it would be great to find a source of
inexpensive usb keyboards too. They don't have to do anything fancy, just work
for input.

RE: Music Keyboard for TamTam?

2008-12-04 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Thanks for all your efforts!

The last time I used a midi keyboard with a Mac (it was a G3) it had to have a
special "midi interface" and then was just "plug and play" from there using
Finale as a program. In looking over your discussion below, it looks like you
did manage to get a midi keyboard to work with the XO, but with great
difficulty. Some questions...

Will it work with all of the TamTam Activities?

Is it likely that all midi keyboards would work?

Would it be possible to put the instructions into language that the less
technically inclined could easily follow to get started on this?

Does anything have to be changed in the software/hardware to make this easily
used by teachers everywhere?

Do you know of any source of very simple, inexpensive midi keyboards? No bells
and whistles needed, they are already in the XO in the TamTam Activities.

Could easier use of a midi keyboard be incorporated into a change in the Sugar
OS (like 9.1.0)?

Or is there an easy way to make the current set-up easier?

Thanks again for your interest and efforts!

RE: Music Keyboard for TamTam?

2008-12-09 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi Gary,

This is very exciting and I would love to help test it when it is ready
for that. This idea came to mind when I noticed Mexico's OLPC activity
information for TamTamMini showed the relationship of the XO keys to those
of an actual music keyboard. Why not let the children experience the real
thing? You can download their guide here (see page 3 in the TamTamMini
instructions):

http://www.mochiladigitaltelmex.com.mx/olpc/index.php/Herramientas_pedag%C3%B3gicas

As a former music major and the wife of a retired instrumental music
teacher, I really would love to have TamTam give students a chance to
transfer their skills to music keyboards and mallet instruments. I
asked on the olpc-sur list if anyone would use something like this with
their students. I got only one reply, but I think it was evidence of
the concerns teachers have...they thought it was a great idea except for
the cost of the music keyboards.

Maybe we need to start a company to make no-frills basic usb music
keyboards to sell for about $20-$25 US so that schools in countries
with deployments could afford to get some for their music classes.

Keep me posted on your progress!

FW: [Sur] videos de Rivera, Uruguay (Excellent!)

2009-01-29 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi...

Someone in Uruguay has posted two videos showing how they are using the XOs in
the classrooms. It is difficult to understand the children at times, but
someone has put in sub-titles in English. So, for us, that is ok (some of the
Spanish speakers are having trouble with it though).

There are amazing things in here...how the students and teacher keep in
constant communication, how the teacher keeps track of what the students are
doing, how and what they are learning from TurtleArt, how they use email, how
they figured out how to convert and play YouTube videos, and how the teacher
uses them as part of the curriculum.

The tool they used for the subtitles, Overstream, seems pretty fantastic too.
The possibilities of using it for other things seem endless.

This is really good stuff. Take the time to check it out!

Uruguay: Using the XO with Developmentally Challenged Kids

Favorite Projects for XO Development?

Hello Friends,

OLPC will have a booth this weekend (2/20-2/22) at the Southern California Area
LInux Expo (SCaLE). This is a large conference (up to 1000) of open-source
aficionados including programmers. It is a great chance to recruit folks for

I am putting together a brochure to pass out at the conference and want to

you all take a look at the page listed below and make any additions and updates
you would like included? I need this done by Wednesday Noon (PT). Thanks!

TamTam

2009-02-25 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi Aaron and other music enthusiasts...

Aaron asked for info on how to use TamTam. Here is the MiniTamTam information
in Spanish. It has a link to a demo in English on YouTube at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31L9qaxOrp0

Here is one for the synthLab:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nwqt8NMT-zI&feature=related

All show an older version of Sugar, but you can get the idea from them.

There are other videos on YouTube you might check also.

We really need to do a FLOSS manual for the entire TamTam suite during the
BookSprint next August. How about it?

We really need someone to do the programming to interface an electronic
keyboard to the XO. Shouldn't be hard to do since the XO already can recognize
usb keyboards...just something that will convert the signal from the music
keyboard to what it would be if the corresponding XO key were pressed.

This is such a powerful program with a lot of educational potential. We really
need to give it more attention.

Activities Under Emulation

2009-03-01 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi All,

I am working on a presentation I will be doing about OLPC and Sugar at a huge
educator's conference in Palm Springs next week. I realize I need some
nitty-gritty type info about the current state of Sugar emulation on PCs and
Macs. Can anyone fill me in on the latest, most up-to-date answers to these
questions? Maybe Luke? Anyone else?

Will the latest Live CD work with both PCs and Macs? (most educators prefer and
have Macs)

Will the latest SOAS work with both PCs and Macs?

Regarding various Activities...which run best under emulation?

Will the following specific activities work under emulation:

Record (on machines with built in cameras and mics)?

Measure (on machines with built in mics)?

Distance (on machines with bluetooth)?

Write?

Paint?

EToys?

Squeak?

TurtleArt?

The TamTam suite of activities?

I have heard there is a way that other types of computers running under
emulation can collaborate. Has anyone tried this successfully. What did you
use and how did you do it? Was the neighborhood view and inviting collaborators
enabled?

I'm sure I haven't thought of everything, but this will give me a start.

Thanks,
Caryl

Sugar Live CD on Mac or PC?

2009-03-02 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi All...

One more question before the CUE Conference this week. I had bought a Sugar
Live CD from xoexplosion, but before I had a chance to try it on my MacBook,
someone at SCaLE took it! Now I need to know...

Would it have worked if I had just booted my MacBook from it? How would I have
used it on a PC? Is the version available for download at
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Live_CD one that would be the same as the one sold by
XOexplosion? I want to make this as simple as possible for folks. If I start
talking about Ubuntu and Fedora and the like, they will run, not walk, to the
nearest exit!

Maybe the easiest thing would be to refer them to xoexplosion? Or to tell them
to just make a SOAS?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Folks,

Once again I have found something wonderful to share from the olpc-sur list.
In Uruguay they have come up with a cartoon video and a computer game designed
to help dispel fears of computers that some adults (including parents and
teachers) may have. They call it El Cuco de las computadores. In Latin
American countries, el cuco is sort of a "boogyman," based on irrational,
unfounded fears.

The cute cartoon gives a simple introduction to computers and what they can do.
In the section on "portatiles" (laptops) they include an image of an XO. Then
below the YouTube window there is a button to click to access a cute game they
have written that will help a beginner get accoustomed to the keyboard and
mouse (they use mice a lot with the XOs in Uruguay).

You don't have to know Spanish to appreciate these resources. Their production

Don't miss this! More great stuff from Uruguay

2009-03-24 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Their production
values are top-notch! Take a look, enjoy, and figure a way we can
translate/localize it for other places (other languages and other, local,
boogeymen!)

Education Humor! Get a new perspective...

2009-04-07 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi,
Some of you who are working on this wonderful education project may never have
experienced the joy of actually being in a classroom...as a teacher. This was
sent to me by a retired teacher friend. I have no doubt that somewhere, at
some time every one of these things happened...perhaps more than once. This is
why when developing software for children the mantra should be "expect the
unexpected". Enjoy!

FW: OLPC Projects/VideoEditing and Video Edit

2009-07-22 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi All,
Here is a great opportunity for someone to pick up where Robert left off and
contribute something really useful, fun, educational, practical, and wanted for
the XO and SoaS. Robert is willing to advise and help anyone who wants to pick
up this project to get a Video Editing Activity into Sugar.

Hello Caryl,

My work on the project has stalled. When I left off last year, a gstreamer
glitch was causing OGGs from the XO camera to freeze the system, which
compounded with performance issues stalled the project. There's a good chance
that that particular problem has been resolved, and I too would love to see a
video editing activity on the XO.

I'm not sure how much work I'll be able to do, but I am definitely available to
advise and help out how I can. If a volunteer is interested, I would imagine a
good deal could be done in porting an existing free video editor (pitivi is
what I tried due to the similarities in its toolkit and that being used for
sugar) to the XO interface.

Keep in touch,
Robert

There is really a lot of interest in having a simple video editing Activity for

2009-09-17 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi...

This came to my husband Ed's email today... guess they assumed he was the
techie in the family... wrong!

Both OLPC and SugarLabs should have a big presence at this event. It has led
us to some valuable contacts in the past 2 years. I plan to do a presentation
on the Contributors Program and help set up and "person" (not "man") a booth
with XOs in the exhibit hall. Many attendees will already have their own XOs.
We should have a big SoaS setup too...

Imagine a huge hall filled with open source developers and companies that use
open source or do things related to it. Techie heaven!

If you want to present in the education track... it is called OSSIE (Open
Source Software In Education) and is only on Friday. Not well attended though
b/c teachers can't get the time off... too bad. When you sign up you will find
other tracks as well. Pick the one that makes the most sense for your topic.

The CFP follows.

Hope to see many of you there!

Secure or Unsecure?

2009-12-06 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi,

I am playing with the XO-1.5 that Adam sent this week. I love a lot of the
features, but want to get updated so I can help test things. I have printed
out the instructions for updating and have run into a few snags.

First, I don't know how to tell if the machine is secured or not. As a
"developer" machine it should be unsecured, but the firmware version doesn't
show up on the start-up banner. As a matter of fact, there is no start-up
banner, leading me to suspect the machine is secured. I was able to find the
firmware version (Q3A11) in the "About My Computer" section. I need to get to
Q3a18.

Secondly, I tried to do the update online on the XO, following carefully the
instructions on the q3a18 firmware section of the wiki. No matter what
variation of the commands I enter it comes back with "No such file or
directory" or "command not found". Maybe I have a syntax error of some type,
but I have tried several variations with no luck.

Any suggetions?

Getting Started With Testing

2009-12-07 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi...

Thanks to the patience of James Cameron on IRC last night (probably morning for
him), I now have the XO-1.5 B machine Adam sent all updated to the latest
firmware (q3a18) and software (54) builds.

Are there specific things I should test or should I just "play" until I "break"
something? Has anyone been testing the TamTams? I want to be useful here...
just point me in the right direction!

FW: Secure or Unsecure?

2009-12-07 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi John,

Last night, with the help of James Cameron on irc, I managed to update the
firmware to q3a18 and the software to build 54. He did a superb job of walking
me through the process.

All seems to be working fine with the expected bugs (no camera yet). Now I just
need someone to tell me what I should test. I don't want to just duplicate
what has already been done.

Should I just "play" until something "breaks" or are there specific things that
need to be looked at?

2009-12-13 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi SGers...

I thought I might try helping test the F11 Build 10 on an XO-1. I have one
that had a developer key way back in the summer of 2008. I have reflashed the
machine numerous times as software updates have arrived... using the No-fail
Update, which I thought was supposed to erase everything.

Tonight, when I turned the machine on, I pressed the escape key just for fun to
see what would happen. It went to the same "ok" prompt I get on the XO-1.5 O am
testing.

Did the developer key persist through the numerous reflashings the machine has
endured in the past year or so or do I need to go pick it up again?

TamTam Mini Quirks In Build 56

2009-12-13 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi...

I have been playing with Tam Tam Mini in build 56. After playing for a while
it will not allow the machine to go home! You can access the Journal and go to
the Activities previously opened (including Tam Tam Mini) but there is no way
to get back to the home screen. You have to do a force quit with the power
button.

I have checked to see if this was a special occurrence but I got it to happen 3
times total and have no doubt that it will happen again. Each time, I selected
a drum set and instrument. Then I just kept playing with the notes and loops
for several minutes.

After just a minute or 2, I could still access the home page, but after I kept
playing for maybe 5 minutes or so... it would no longer go to home.

I tried this on an XO-1 just to see if it was an old bug. A few funny things
happened there, but I was always able to get back to the home screen on the
XO-1 but not on the XO-1.5.

BTW, I didn't realize that Tam Tam Mini had melodic loops available on the keys
that aren't assigned to specific notes. Really cool! Lots of fun!

Caryl

P.S. The build 59 download just finished. I'll install it now.

Problems with build 59

2009-12-13 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi...

Downloaded Build 59 this evening and tried to flash the XO-1.5. It appeared to
work perfectly, but could not complete restart at the end.

The outline of the XO man appears and dots slowly begin to surround him, but it
stalls about 2/3 of the way around the circle.

I tried to install it twice. Same results. Maybe it is a faulty download. If
you think it may be, I can download it and try again tomorrow.

I'll try it again. Right now I have 59 installed so I'll use it. I will also
time it to see how long it takes to happen. It may be longer than I thought.

First I clicked on the stop sign icon. That took me to the Journal. I tried the
F3 key to go home. It didn't work. From the Journal I was able to get back to
TamTam and to the other Activities in the Journal, but when they were closed I
ended up back in the Journal. I was locked in!

RE: TamTam Mini Quirks In Build 56

2009-12-13 Thread Caryl Bigenho

OK. Tried it again with build 59. This time it was different. I played with
it for about 40 mins with no problems until the sound quit! I tried it in
TamTam Jam... no sound. I tried it in Speak... no sound. Rebooted... sound was
fine!

This is probably an interesting problem that isn't a problem. How many people
are going to play with Tam Tam Mini for 40 minutes? Probably not many. And if
they do manage to crash the sound, they can just reboot.

So, I'll download build 60 now and see what other things I can get to crash!

Here is a link to the list of exhibitors, so far. More will probably be added.

RE: [support-gang] touchpad woes: quick fix?

2010-05-14 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Wow... that is really expensive! What if you simply turned the XO screen to
face forward, set a laptop with a good built-in web cam in front of it, and
drove the projector with the laptop? It might take a little bit of adjusting,
but it should work. If you use a laptop and dongle that you probably already
have the cost is $0.

Has anyone tried using a document camera to display the XO screen on a big
screen? Teachers have started using them at my school although there is only
one to share among 10+ teachers. I thought it might solve the problem of not
being able to connect an LCD projector. What other solutions have people come
up with for showing the class how to do something?

Something along the line of this-

RE: [support-gang] XoPhoto needs a few intrepid testing volunteers.

2010-08-25 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi George,
I downloaded XoPhoto this evening. It looks great and I am looking forward to
playing with ... oops! i mean, testing it. Do you have a discussion page set
up somewhere so those of us who are trying it can compare notes and trouble
shoot? What we might think is a bug could just be us doing something wrong. It
would be great to be able to compare notes.

Hi everyone,

I've been working pretty regularly since April on an application to manipulate
images found in the journal. Probably the best description is at
http://georgejhunt.com/olpc/xophoto/xophoto.html.

I'd appreciate help in identifying and correcting my oversights, bugs, kludges.
. .

I believe that XoPhoto runs on Build 802 and Build 850. There are some api
problems with the pygame that comes with builds before 802 that I have not yet
resolved.

Feedback warmly solicited, and appreciated,

Thanks

Google Art Project

2011-02-03 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi All...

Here us a wonderful resource shared by folks on the sur and Squeakland lists.

http://www.googleartproject.com/

If you haven't already seen it, take a look and enjoy it but not on your XO!
Irequires Flash not only to move about the galleries, but also to view
individual works of art.

I successfully installed the latest version of Flash on an XO-1.5 running
10.1.3 (860). fI followed the instructions on this page:

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Adobe_Flash

I am not able to access anything on the XO. An image does appear on the home
page of the site, but I am not able to do anything else. It tries. I see a
Flash button to click, but clicking gives a black image.

Is there any way we can get this resource working on the XOs to make it
available to kids all over the world?

Caryl
P.S. It is wonderful on my MacBookP.P.S. If you get multiple copies of this it
is because I both want to share the link with all and find someone who can make
it happen for the XO users of the world!

If this works, perhaps the Getty would be willing to join in. They have huge
funding and are not interested in profits etc. They are also very interested in
education and have some in-house ed programs. They are not included in the
Google Art Project. Maybe someone (with a bigger name than mine) could ask
them after we have it started and know it will work.

Lost Communication in 10.1.3?

2011-02-06 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi...

Prepping some XOs for our booth at SCaLE 9X Feb 26-27. When I first started
charging and testing I was running 10.1.2. I tried Chat and found that the
XO-1s could easily chat with the XO-1.5s.

Then I updated all of them to 10.1.3, and this ability seems to have been lost.
While the XO-1.5s connected right away to the ad hoc network, the XO-1s were
totally left out. They can only see each other.

Is this an intentional change? Is there a way for both models to communicate
among themselves in 10.1.3?

Hi Gerald,

That was the first thing I tried and it didn't work for me. I'll try it again
when I get back from TX. How did you connect the 1.0 to the network? They are
still showing as access points rather than the Mayan numerals on the 1.0s.
Maybe I need to do the install again.

2011-02-06 Thread Caryl Bigenho

OK I think I know what happened. First a question... how will the ad hoc
networks look on the XO-1? They were still targets on these. Maybe I grabbed
the wrong usb stick and put 10.1.2 on them again... but I don't think so.

I didn't see any parenthesis... just that the 2 XO-1s could see each other
fine, but they couldn't see the 1.5s, even with sharing on. I started the Chat
on a 1.5. Maybe it has to start on a 1.0?

The XO-1 will only see Ad-hoc XO-1.5 networks which currently have
XOs connected to them. It will not show all three Mayan icons
unless there is an XO-1.5 or other computers creating three Ad-hoc
networks, one with each of the desired names.

You will have to manually connect the XO-1 to an Ad-hoc network; it
will not automatically do so.

Unless you told them otherwise, by default all the XO-1.5s likely
decided to use Ad-hoc channel 1 if they did not see a preferred
access point, so you should go looking on the 10.1.3 XO-1 for a
filled color circle with a single dot in it. If the XO-1.5s were
near an access point they were taught about, they may have connected
to that instead. The ad-hoc networks on the XO-1 with 10.1.3 will
look like the filled-color (active) networks on the XO-1.5 using the
XO-1 user's colors to indicate that someone is listening on the
channel.

It may take up to 30 or 60 seconds(?) from the time that an XO-1.5
created the Ad-hoc network to the point that an XO-1 will decide to
rescan to see what networks are out there. I'm hoping there are no
restrictions on rescanning once an XO-1 decides to connect to a Mesh
network.

Admittedly the graphic
http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/File:Adhoc_network_XO-1.png (available
from http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Features/Ad_hoc_Networking) is
someone confusing, since the XO-1 in that screenshot actually is
connected {has parenthesis} to a network which is neither the Ad-hoc
network spotted (on channel 11 - a dot and two lines) nor the Mesh
ones.

RE: [Health] $30 microscope

2011-02-07 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi All...

In one of my previous lives, as a science teacher, I taught high school and
middle school students the wonders of the world of microscopic things. While a
$1 microscope sounds wonderful, it doesn't sound very practical. Attaching the
lenses to the camera lens on the XO, as it seems to be described, would require
holding the sample up to the lens, or holding the XO over the sample. This
would be pretty tricky with a petri dish full of protozoa! The problem of
focusing is also a concern.

I would love to try a microscope with a usb connection. In fact, I may buy one
to add to by XO gadget collection. But I have a couple of questions.

Is the resolution of Mary Lou's $1 microscope dependent on the lens or the
Record Activity or something else? Would a usb microscope with better
(focusable) lenses give higher resolution?

Is there already an Activity for Sugar that supports the use of a usb
microscope?

Questions Re: Skype on XO

2011-03-01 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi Folks...

Back with more techie questions. What can you tell me about Skype running on
the XO? I would especially like to hear from folks who have recently done
successful 2-way video chats themselves. I have read the instructions, and
need to try but want to know the answers to a few questions first.

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Skype

I need to be able to do a 2-way video chat. I would like to know...

1) How much memory does Skype take up?

2) Do the instructions on the wiki at apply to 860?

3) What is the difference in performance between the XO-1 and the XO-1.5?

4) What is the reason for the difference, memory or speed or both?

5) Will I need to delete Activities before installing Skype?

6) Does it run just in Terminal in Sugar, or is there a way to use it in Gnome?

7) Can it run a video chat along with the text chat window for sending links
etc?

8 Do I have to have a PC to set it up? I am a "Mac person."

9) Can it run a video chat along with the text chat window for sending links
etc?

10) What is "gstfakevideo"? Do I need it? Do I want it?

11) What other things should I know before installing an trying this?

Thanks

Hi
I am looking for the source of the great "multiplication tables" animated
cartoon that someone used in their talk at eduJAM. Can anyone help me? This
was the one where the students were reciting the tables that were written on
the chalkboard then they were sitting in front of computer monitors reciting
the same way. Technology put "on top" of the same old thing!

A small deployment of 11.2.0

2011-08-23 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi Folks!

You asked anyone who plans to deploy 11.2.0 to let you know so you can keep
them informed of fixes for remaining issues. That's me. I will be collecting 10
XO-1s from a stalled Contributors Program project at Montana State University
and re-deploying them to a school in rural Montana. I plan to reflash all of
them with 11.2.0 this week before delivering them next week.

I will be meeting with 2 of the involved teachers next week to get them
oriented on the machines. Among other things, I plan to show them how to
update the software as new releases come out. When I am away in California for
the winter, I will be able to assist them via Skype as needed.

We have discussed collaboration and they would like to use it, but we can wait
for that until it is more reliable. Any news on updates with fixes will be
greatly appreciated.

I have one unrelated question for you folks. I notice Labyrinth is included on
the software for the XO-1.5 but not on the XO-1. Is this a space issue? Will
there be a problem if I add it? When we were visiting schools in Uruguay we
saw a lot of good of examples of ways to use Labyrinth. When I asked one
seven-year-old what his favorite program was I was very surprised when he
answered "Labyrintino!" It's a real winner!

Need To Know: How to get the latest Help Activity on Macs and PCs???

2011-10-25 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi Folks,

As most of you already know, a group of people have volunteered to write an
up-to-date revision of the Help Activity that will be available online, in a
print version via Lulu, and on the XO itself. We set things up at the great
Community Summit in San Francisco last weekend, and are ready to start work.

We want to take advantage of the most recent revisions that are currently
available in the Help Activity rather than the older, more "dated" versions in
the older online FLOSS manual. Why reinvent the wheel? All previous authors
and editors will be credited in the new version.

The most up-to-date/Sugarized edition is Version 13, as included in Release
11.3.0 RC3 / Build 882 (or 883) It is downloadable at:
http://activities.sugarlabs.org//en-US/sugar/addon/4051

Most of us are writing on Macs and PCs running a variety of OS'es. If someone
knows how to download the most up-to-date file (linked above) in a
readable/editable form on a Mac (or PC), please tell us how and also post the
instructions on this page http://j.mp/xomanual

And, while you are on that page, if you feel motivated to join in the revision
effort, just sign up for whichever section you would like to help with!

RE: Need To Know: How to get the latest Help Activity on Macs and PCs???

2011-10-25 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi Walter,

The Help Activity we want to work from is 11.3.0. It is version 13 and was
updated by Bastien, David Farning, and Brian Jordan. I don't think they did
anything with the Turtle Art Activity. As far as I can see, the last work on it
was done in 2008 during, or soon after, the Book Sprint. I you have 11.3.0
running on an XO you can check it over and be sure of the status and contents.
We should be able to import chapters from other FLOSS manuals, such as your
Turtle Art manual, although I have had some difficulty making it work. Tuukka
wrote the latest version of booki and he is going to check it to see if there
is a problem that needs fixing.

Sandra Thaxter wasn't at the SF Summit but has signed up to help with the
Turtle Art sections. You may wish to contact her and sign up to work with her.
Links and directions for doing so are here: http://j.mp/xomanual

People will be working remotely and then cutting and pasting their work into
booki or entering it directly at the booki site. That is why we need to know
how to get the current version on our laptops. Then everyone can work in the
mode they are most comfortable with.

Yes, we would like to import the newest versions taken from updated manuals.
That is what Tuukka is helping with. But even then, they may need some
"tweaking" for the latest 11.3.0 Also, some that are much longer than the
original SECTIONS may not be used in their entirety, but instead will be
referenced with links. We are a bit concerned about space and don't want the
Activity SECTIONS to be long enough to be a whole separate manual. The idea is
to get folks off to a good start with an Activity and have them do one or 2
projects. Then they can go to the Activity's own manual to learn more.
Now, "true confessions," I am not familiar with the acronym "ASLO." What does
it refer to and how can we use it to make the FLOSS manual revisions? Is it
something we can use to read and edit the material on our laptops/

RE: [support-gang] Need To Know: How to get the latest Help Activity on Macs and PCs???

2011-10-26 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi...
Progress! Here is a version for Mac Users I tested and worked up using the info
Tony Forster sent. It works in OS 10.5.8. I have already posted Tony Forster's
version on our wiki page. I'll add this one too.
*Control-click on :
http://activities.sugarlabs.org//en-US/sugar/downloads/latest/4051/addon-4051-latest.xo
**Choose "Download Linked File As..." (click on it)

***In the "Save As:" box type " help-13.zip "

***Choose something for "Where" (desktop is OK)

***Click the "Save" button

Wait a few minutes for the download. If will give you a 12.6 MB zip file.

Click on it to unzip. It will give you a folder called "Help.activity" full of
lots of resources from the activity.

The folder has a folder in it called, "help." Open it.

Find the Activity you are working on. The Chapters and resources for that
Section in the Version 13 Help Activity will be there. They are arranged in
alphabetical order.

Some of these are html files. Click to highlight the file. You will be in the
finder. Click on "File" -> "Open With" -> "Safari". The file will open in
Safari and look exactly as it currently appears in the Help Activity on the XO.

If you have a capable text editor such as TextWrangler (
http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/download.html ) you will be able
to see and edit the file in html.

Off-topic (sorta) Need help opening Raspberry pi case

2012-12-01 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi Guys...
My raspberry pi arrived yesterday and I want to put it into the little clear
plastic case I got for it. Ed and I have both tried toopen it with no luck. We
don't want to break it. If anyone on these lists has one, can you tell us the
secret?
Thanks!
Caryl
P.S. Has anyone tried to run Sugar on the Raspberry pi?
P.P.S. Link to info about the case:
http://www.newark.com/multicomp/mc-rp001-clr/enclosure-raspberry-pi-clear/dp/07W8936
P.P.P.S. I don't recommend getting your pi at Newark. They really overcharged
me for the shipping.___

RE: Off-topic (sorta) Need help opening Raspberry pi case

2012-12-01 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Sounds like something worth trying... when I get the basics figured out (and
the case open)!.
Maybe we need a new, special version of Sugar for the Raspberry Pi of
course, it would be called"...
"Sugar Pi" ;-D
Seriously though, the more devices that will run Sugar, the better!
The book I bought about the Raspberry pi that was written by one of the 2 guys
that designed it says it was designed with children as users in mind.

Reminder: Proposals for SCaLE11X Presentations Due Mon 12/10/12

2012-12-06 Thread Caryl Bigenho

Hi Folks...
Anyone want to present at SCaLE11x the weekend of Feb 22-24, 2013? The deadline
for submitting your proposal is this coming Monday, December 12. There will be
an education track even if it isn't listed (it wasn't, but may be now). Of
course, you don't have to present on an education topic. You can do it on any
open source topic. Presenters get free admission. But, if we have a booth
again, you will probably get that anyway if you donate time to work the booth.
The email below is from last month. They had reminders on FaceBook earlier this
week too. Hope you can participate!

Question About 13.1.0 on XO-1s

2013-05-03 Thread Caryl Bigenho
Hi...
Today I was helping some folks reflash the XO-1s they will be using in a small
deployment in Los Angeles. After installing 13.1.0 we found that a scrolling
display of code or something white on black... went by too fast to read
appeared on startup. This was not just on the first startup, but on all
startups. Is this necessary? If not, can it be turned off? How?
Thanks,Caryl ___

Fissics 4 Fun, AKA Physics for Poets!*

2013-05-17 Thread Caryl Bigenho
Hi Folks... greetings from your favorite MOOC-aholic!
OK here is one I really need to share with you. If you are a teacher, student,
programmer, or just curious about the world, you will want to take a look at
this course offered by Georgia Tech. Believe it or not, this in an online LAB
course!
As the little introductory video says, your world is your laboratory and you
will use your cell phone video camera feature, along with open source software
you install in the first week, to do experiments with common things in the
world around you.
One exciting thing (for me at least) is that it uses open source software that
some of you who are developers might be able to rework for Sugar. In fact, I
really hope some of you will take a look and see if you might be able to do
that.
Unfortunately, it starts before the current semester ends for many of you, but
AP exams are over so students may have a little more time now. It runs for 11
weeks. If you are a teacher, you might want to suggest it to some of your
students. Some of students they show in the intro video appear quite young.
Anyway, the class officially starts on Monday, May 20, but the pre-course
surveys and all of the first week's materials are already there so you can
plunge right in if you wish.
https://www.coursera.org/course/phys1
Hope to see some of you there!
Caryl
* The actual course title is: Introductory Physics I with Laboratory
