[ovirt-devel] Re: who can tell me that you did development environment on centos 7.9 was successful?

2021-01-28 Thread Martin Perina
Hi,

If you are interested in oVirt 4.3, then I suggest you take a look at
ovirt-engine-4.3 branch, which contains the latest code for 4.3 release.
Everything about developing oVirt Engine is written in README.adoc:

https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine/blob/ovirt-engine-4.3/README.adoc

It contains all the necessary steps to be able to configure the oVirt
Engine development environment, so you can start coding.

Regards,
Martin

[ovirt-devel] Re: Switch CentOS to Oracle Linux

2021-01-28 Thread ntoxicator
Michal,

Thank you for your detailed reply and answering all the questions.

I'm hopeful to see progress on the RHEL dependencies front for ovirt, as I'm
sure others would appreciate this as well. Considering they'll allow up to
16-hosts for free.

Then it is the question if we would put out trust into Oracle and migrate
without another bait and switch on their behalf for money grab. Before we give
our money to them

I refuse to migrate to CentOS Stream in production. Too many rolling releases.

So hopefully we all settle either RHEL, OL, or RockyLinux [when kicks off
stable].

oVirt is an open source project, RHV is Red Hat’s product, they don’t
necessarily mean the same
Openshift Virtualization already exists, it has upstream too, though not very
mature yet.

We will look at collaboration there for sure, like we did before with Openstack
integrations. But that doesn’t mean we migrate oVirt into Openshift tomorrow.
Kubevirt/Kubernetes is a very different thing, it may make sense for some
people to eventually move there, it may make sense for others not to. Well,
like with Openstack...

There were emails on that before - we changed our development model to rather
continuous “4.4.z” with faster incremental updates instead of 9+ months large
drops. So in that sense “beyond 4.4” is where we are already. As for OL support
see the other thread, I do not see why it wouldn’t work provided that RHEL will
work. Can’t say if we will have any resources to dedicate to OL specifically.

no idea if there’s a fork. As for a product, afaik yes, there’s OLVM.

> - What about supporting OpenSuSE or SLES?

not on the roadmap. we had discussions about different distros, also long time
ago, but it’s not feasible, there are too many little differences. If anyone
would want to contribute we don’t mind, but it’s by no means a small feat (we
do have some remains here or there from our failed debian attempt long long
time ago)

possibly. But dependencies are the key...

Great to hear, We are still very much around.
But many of those questions/plans do depend on contributors. We’d be very happy
to accept other contributors who would want to expand/improve oVirt...

yes, dependencies are the main issue. I don’t think we particularly care that
much about the base OS (as long as it is more or less a RHEL clone it doesn’t
really matter)

we won’t be able to sanity test everything, but RHEL sounds like a feasible
idea. We do need to move from CentOS to Stream first anyway, though, just for
the development sake.

Can you please provide more info on the verification process?

Sure.
The OST job [1] passed on PS 16 of [2] and there was no change on the
patch between PS 16 and PS 17 that got in.

[1]
https://jenkins.ovirt.org/view/oVirt%20system%20tests/job/ovirt-system-tests_manual/7706/

[2] https://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/ovirt-engine/+/111657/

So here's some post-mortem analysis.

The repo used for the manual run [3] was [4]. The build has been already
cleaned up by jenkins, so there's
no way to peek into what versions of engine were built there. We can
estimate though, based on the date
of 'check-patch' job, which is Jan 22 4:48 PM. The OST run was done on
Jan 25, 2021 11:41 AM. The built
packages were simply outdated when the OST run was made. We can actually
see that in 'dnf.log' [5]:

2021-01-25T11:45:51Z INFO Dependencies resolved.
2021-01-25T11:45:51Z INFO

 Package  Arch  Version  Repository  Size

4.4.5.3-0.0.master.20210125103910.gitd5d5142096e.el8
ovirt-master-tested-el8  13 M

The version of ovirt-engine that was available in
ovirt-master-tested-el8 repo is from Jan 25.

Some conclusions:
- we use very fresh versions of packages in OST. If you're planning to
test a package of your own please rebase first
- if you're trying to test your own package please make sure it's
actually used by OST run, you can check that in dnf.log files
- in the future we should have an automated way of telling if none of
the packages provided by the user didn't land in any of OST's VMs. I
filed [6] to address this.

Since this is blocking all basic suite runs I posted a patch [7] that
disables USB on the VMs we create in the suite. Please review.

[ovirt-devel] Re: Ansible callbacks

2021-01-28 Thread Martin Perina
Hi,

we don't have such a callback. Currently we support only custom Ansible
playbooks during host deploy process, which can be used for example to
define custom firewall rules:

https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/administration_guide/#Configuring_Host_Firewall_Rules

But it's a general playbook, so any other customization can be done.

Could you please share with us more details about your use case?

Thanks,
Martin

you need to have CentOS 8 to develope and/or execute oVirt Engine
4.4/master. On CentOS 7 you would need to stay on previous version oVirt
4.3.

Hi,
Seems like our changes to bios type handing lead to that.
Interestingly, OST passed on the patches..

Can you please provide more info on the verification process?

Hi,
OST fails constantly in test_check_snapshot_with_memory [1] with
NPE  in
VmDeviceUtils.updateUsbSlots [2]. Build with any additional
changes (custom
repo) is on [3].

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find the root cause. Could someone
please take
a look?

Thanks
