[e-smith-devinfo] Macintosh network printers

2001-08-30 Thread Mark Farey

I'm using an old Mac as a print server to make an Apple LaserWriter
available on my network, and this is visible to a PC running Windows 2000
but not to a Windows 98 system. In the case of the Win 2K machine I access
the printer by creating an AppleTalk device port. Is there a way to do this
for Windows 98 machines?

Secondly, how do I create a print spool for this device under Netatalk
running on my e-smith server? I assume I have to modify papd.conf but I'm
not clear on the syntax. Also, do I have to install a PPD file and if so,
where?

I'm assuming I can't do all this somehow through the Printers dialog in the
e-smith Administration web pages, because printers there have to be
accessible through the Microsoft Windows Network. No?

Regards to all,
Mark

Re: [e-smith-devinfo] Macintosh network printers

I use Macs and Apple lasers. If you are lucky (you did not mention the
printer model) on the back of the printer there is a LPT port, use this
to connect to the e-smith. Create a new printer on the e-smith front end
and you are done. Your networked Macs and PCs alike will be able to
share this printer.

Some Apple lasers had ethernet built in. you would need to give the
printer a TCP/IP number in the range you are using.

It's a Personal LaserWriter 320 and, no, it doesn't have an LPT port (I
wish!), just a serial AppleTalk port. I've installed AppleTalk Bridge
(unsupported utility from Apple) and this seems to work fine - it appears on
the Ethernet network and can be accessed by my Win 2K machine. The problem
is how to access it from a Win 98 machine.

Regards,
Mark.

Re: [e-smith-devinfo] Macintosh network printers

2001-08-31 Thread James Stracey

simply share the printer you have on your Windows 2000 machine. You'll need
to keep this machine on, but at least all users on the network will be able
to see and print to the printer. Unfortuantly, Windows 98 (by default,
there are 3rd party products available) doesn't have any services that allow
you to view macintosh printers or file shares.

I can really only refer you to the netatalk documentation.

> I'm assuming I can't do all this somehow through the Printers dialog in the

No, not true. The printers that you configure via the e-smith server
manager are available either via direct connection to a parallel port, or
via ethernet using the lpd protocol. The printers because accessible using
the Microsoft Windows Network only because the e-smith server exports them
to that environment.

Here is a short extract from the most recent netatalk documentation:

DDP is in the kernel. "atalkd" implements RTMP, NBP, ZIP, and AEP. It
is the AppleTalk equivalent of Unix "routed". There is also a
client-stub library for NBP. ATP and ASP are implemented as
libraries. "papd" allows Macs to spool to "lpd", and "pap" allows Unix
machines to print to AppleTalk connected printers. "psf" is a
PostScript printer filter for "lpd", designed to use "pap". "psorder"
is a PostScript reverser, called by "psf" to reverse pages printed to
face-up stacking printers. "afpd" provides Macs with an interface to
the Unix file system. Refer to the appropriate man pages for
 operational information.

This states that the "pap" program will allow the e-smith server to print
to AppleTalk connected printers. "pap" stands for Printer Access Protocol,
and you may be able to read more about it via "man pap". If you also look
at "man psf", you might be able create a template fragment for
/etc/printcap which will allow pap to be used to connect an e-smith base3d
printer spool to be set up for the Mac connected printer, which is assumed
to be a PostScript printer.

If you happen to get this working, I would be very interested to hear the
details.

Charlie,

Many thanks for responding to this, particularly at midnight on a Friday
evening! Don't you guys ever go home? :-)

Anyway, I'm working on it as time permits (meaning not the last few days)
and will report back on results if and when I get this working.

Regards,
Mark.
