I would not get your hopes up too much about this. Definitely don't get in a
mental state where you're already thinking about how to spend the money,
because this mental state is going to distort your judgment and your adherence
to any principles (technical or moral) that you might have held previously.

In more practical terms, politicians are not the same people who process
funding applications, and the most they will be able to do is "put in a good
word". I doubt regional government institutions have much money to give for
paradigm-shifting internet projects like this. OTOH if we're talking about EU
money, then I hear the sort of bullshit this involves would basically require a
full time employee with previous experience to properly handle it. The
probability of success would have more to do with how much jargon bullshit they
can produce that is "in phase" with whomever processes the application on the
EU side, which would create very perverse anti-technical incentives on
Freenet's side.

That said, do keep an eye out on it, just be critical and not let the money
cloud or distract your overall judgment.

Good news:

It didn't matter that no Freenet developer could attend.
My friends managed well on their own to talk with someone from politics.

I won't make any details public about who is involved, but for now I can say:
- It sounds like the politician does indeed like Freenet and is serious in
thinking about how we could acquire further funds.
- This isn't some random local village politician, we're talking about higher
level parliaments!
- One of the main area's of interest of him *is* Internet politics, so he's
perfectly qualified.

I'll keep you up to date! :)

[freenet-dev] Berlin or close resident needed, Fundraising opportunity on May 2-5

2016-04-27 Thread xor
Hey folks,

I recently attended a local Internet politics meetup to speak about Freenet,
at the hope of getting ideas for fundraising.
We turned out to chat about it for 4 hours, and one of the politicians there
likes Freenet and is indeed interested in helping us with acquiring donations!
His plan is to speak to higher level members of the green party about this.

He will be at the re:publica "Web 2.0" conference in Berlin, May 2-4.
On Thursday May 5, he'll also attend the screening of a movie from a
politician who he suspects to be able to help.

I cannot be there myself unfortunately.
So if one of you folks can be in Berlin on May 2-4, and/or ideally on May 5,
it would be nice if you could accompany the guy so he has a Freenet expert at
hand.

If you are interested, please quickly send me a mail about how you're easy to
be contacted, for example your phone number, as this is next week already.

Thanks & Greetings
