If iHRIS is updated regularly at district/sub-county levels (quarterly) it is
more reliable and using DSL you could import aggregated data into DHIS2 and
overlay the indicators; However, major subsystems of HIS i.e. HRH, Finance,
equipment logistics ( health products and technologies)  infrastructure are
weak and not updated;
A paradigm shift for this need be cultivated among the health information
managers to collect from all the health information sources and use DHIS2 as
the main aggregate system;

Hi all,

DHIS version 2.15 is out. We have a great set of new features for you:

- Event reports app: We have a completely new event reports app for
analysis of events. This app lets you do aggregated analysis of events
directly without building aggregation queries and create pivot-style tables,
where you can use data elements as individual dimensions together with
periods and org units. All dimensions can be placed on columns, rows and
filters. The app also lets you query on events using filters on all data
elements, org units or periods. It lets you save tables as favorites and
share them with others. You can also download your favorites to many popular
formats. This app replaces the old tabular reports. You can check it out on
the demo by browsing through all of the favorites.

Documentation | Demo

- Event capture app: A new app for capture of events. This app makes it easy
to capture events efficiently, view the list of events capture so far and
update existing events. It lets you configure and select the columns to show
in the list of events. The app works offline, meaning that you can continue
to enter events even if connectivity drops during your working session.

Documentation | Demo

- Tracked entities: In tracker you can now define any number of tracked
entities, representing things you want to track. Tracked entities can be
commodities, lab samples, buildings, wells, drug batches and persons, or
anything you want. This makes the system more flexible and applicable for
tracking most stuff beyond just persons. A program is associated with one
tracked entity. We hope that you will be creative and take advantage of this
new level of abstraction. You can define tracked entities from persons and
programs tracked entity.

Demo

- Data approval levels: You can now configure the levels for where approval
of data should take place. For instance, you can require that data must be
approved at the facility and provincial org unit hierarchy levels, omitting
approval at the district levels. An approval level requires that the data
must be approval by some user linked to the specific level for it to be
considered valid and be available in data analysis. Approval levels are
configured under settings approval.

Documentation | Demo

- Data approval in analytics: Data approval now takes place in reports module
data approval. Approval of data is now respected in data analytics tools
such as pivot table and visualizer, meaning that data which has not been
approved will not be part of the aggregated values displayed in reports. This
implies that data can be hidden until it has been approved by the appropriate
persons. In other words, the aggregated data in analysis apps will be based
on approved data only.

Documentation | Demo

- Data access control in org unit hierarchy: User's access to data can now be
controlled in the organisation unit hierarchy. This is done by assigning data
view root organisation units per user. The existing association between users
and org units represent access to doing data capture. The new association for
data view organisation units controls for which organisation units a user can
view analytical data in the analysis modules such as pivot table and
visualizer.

Documentation | Demo

- Category option groups and group sets: Category options can now be further
classified by assigning them to category option groups and group sets. An
example where this is useful is when representing various projects as
category options and there is a need to classify these projects by funding
agencies/donors. The group sets are available as dimensions in all data
analysis modules. You set these up from data elements and indicators
category option groups / group sets.

Documentation | Demo

 - Top menu: We have added a new, more flexible top menu. This menu displays
all apps that is available to the current user, including both standard apps
and installed, external apps. It works well on touch-based devices due to the

If we are to create data elements for all conditions need to be under
surveillance, we need to create 2 data elements per condition (suspected and
outbreak) I think.
However, if suspected (property:under surveillance) is a property of any data
element, we don't have to create new data elements and enter data. We can just
re-use the data entered and when counts reach the level (property:upper limit
to be notified as outbreak), can be visualized and trigger alerts.

If we do this, we can keep more than one condition dynamically under
surveillance easily.

Unless is laboratory confirmed, it is always a suspected case of measles or

Hi Bob,

Will not get into the semantics here. :-|

Without really knowing any details of the data , beyond what Knut has shared
with us, but it certainly seems more like Event data than the sort of routine
data which the current data entry UI is geared to. Our use case is somewhat
more in the middle, meaning that we conduct surveillance for a certain period
of time, and then stop. So, we might have data for Jan-June for one Orgunit A
and Feb-August for Orgunit B. What we would like to see however when we look at
August in the Pivots/GIS/etc would be the latest values, i.e. June data for
the first orgunit in the example and August data for the second orgunit.  It
would really not make sense to enter data for July and August for for Orgunit A
first because we have none really and if we did, it would be repetitive.

Knut in your case, it would seem to make little sense to enter data for months
for which it does not exist, just to be able to visualize it. However, as is
often the case with event type of data, what matters in some analyses is the
data which was last observed. I think this is the difference between what you
are proposing and how we handle it here. What we need is an aggregation method
for the time dimension which retrieves the latest data only for a given
orgunit/datalement/categorycombo.

I certainly see the need for being able to enter data for a single orgunit for
multiple periods though. Some data, like population figures, need to be entered
over many time periods, and from a workflow perspective, would simplify things
a bit.

Jason

Hi Knut

At the risk of appearing even more ignorant, doesn't this scenario bear some
resemblance to tracked-entity-event, particularly as we have moved to
generalize this beyond the scope of tracked persons?  Soi event 1, some time
in September, is a measles outbreak in a district.  Event 2, some months
later, signals the end of the outbreak in that district.

Looking at tracker logic and seeing an outbreak-inception-incursion as
something similar to a stage-in-a-program is perhaps an odd thought but it
could be that the model works it is just the words which are wrong.

Maybe thats an off the wall thought, but couldn't help sharing ... :-)

Dear DHIS2 community, looking for good ideas for a use case which is a bit
unusual.

We'd like to map epidemic outbreaks, and the data are very simple: Outbreak
or not, in other words, Yes/No per orgunit (a province or district). Perhaps
Yes Only would be best here?

The tricky part is the time dimension: We need to produdce maps of affected
districts at regular intervals, at least monthly, possibly also more frequent.
However, there is a lot of diversity in the data: Sometimes we have a start
and end date, sometimes just a number of months.

Currently, DHIS2 does not support one screen for multiple periods

I see two possibilities:

1) Create just one dataelement Outbreak as Yes Only in a monthly dataset.
Then one would have to select every affected month and say YES

2) Create two additional data elements: Start date and End date in a
YEARLY dataset. Then also write a script behind the scenes which populates
the Outbreak dataelement for the affected months - or even extend it to days

Better ideas?

Thanks for the information,

We have also experience with the use of OpenXdata in mobile for MOVE-IT and
results for transmission is OK but cannot be used to get more results that are
expected; Tall free numbers for SMS may be ideal; Aggregation also is an issue
but can be used for data entry and relay information on to DHIS. It also calls
for software be downloaded and installed in each phone and cannot use ordinary

Kopi:

Hi, my name is Dagmar
Timler and I am part of a team at Cell-Life in South Africa.
It's my pleasure to
tell you today about a project initiated by the South African
National Department of Health.

Background

The South
African National Department of Health (NDOH)
identified that mobile technology could play an important role
in improving both the speed and the quality of data for informed
decision making and improved service delivery in the Public health
sector. The Department Tendered for a supplier to design and
implement a Mobile Monitoring and Reporting System for the HIV
Counseling and Testing and Antiretroviral Treatment data collection
programs, the Ward-Based Primary Health Care Workers Community
Outreach Teams mobile support initiative and other rapid data
submission programmes as may be required.
Through funding from
the Department of International Development, under the SARRAH
Programme a consortium of HISP and Cell-Life were appointed to implement the
Project, and used the OpenXdata software (under the brand name “Capture”) and
the DHIS2 to
implement the Mobile Monitoring and Reporting System.
Pilot Phase

The pilot phase
included all nine provinces in South Africa, selecting one pilot
district per province.

This meant, that the
project pilot consisted of 937 users and facilities (1 user per
facility). The project pilot phase launched in May
2012 and ran successfully until July 2013. The pilot phase started with the
reporting data
on HIV Testing And Counselling (HCT) which included the number of
persons pre-test counseled and also
tested for HIV, and also Anti-retroviral Treatment (ART) which
collects information on people started and remaining on ART.
The initial data
elements collected reports on the HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT)
programme of the NDOH. The success of the pilot phase was such, that
the program is now being implemented in all 52 districts with more
than 4000 facilities reporting their HCT and ART data monthly via
mobile phones.

Technology

HISP-SA and Cell-Life
presented a solution that responds to NDOH requirements by
integrating OpenXdata (under the
brand name “Capture”) and DHIS2.
OpenXdata (under the
brand name “Capture”) is used as the Mobile component for data
collection, which enables users to capture, validate their data at
the time of capturing and upload data to the DHIS2

DHIS2 is used to store
the data submitted via the mobile component and provides flexible
analysis and reporting tools in the form of dashboards on user’s
desktop - where the page contents are automatically updated from the
database – and is fully integrated with reporting tools (iReports,
Jasper) and third party analysis tools - Excel Pivot tables and GIS .

This solution will
provide facility managers, sub district managers, district managers,
provincial mangers and NDOH with
instant access of the data collected at facility level and allows it
to respond quickly and effectively
should it be required.
The technical solution
consisted of the following elements:

* OpenXdata (under the brand name “Capture”): Mobile data collection
* DHIS2: web based central database
* APN: Access Point Name with 10 Gig monthly data
* Data SIM Cards: Vodacom SIM cards linked only to the APN
* Server: Hosting Capture and DHIS
* Cell-Phones: Nokia 5230
* Please Call Me line (PCM): Used to send the download link to the
users.
* Implementation – set-up (distributing 1000 phones)
Each user was given a
Cellphone, SIM card, username and password. The Cellphones were
issued by the National Department
of Health and the SIM cards are paid for by the National Department
of Health. SIM cards were
configured to link only to the APN and would not have any access to
the internet or make and receive voice calls in order to control
costs and limit abuse.
Users send a Please
Call Me (PCM) on receiving

Subject: [Dhis2-users] DHIS version 2.13 is released

Hi all,

DHIS 2 version 2.13 is out. This release brings some great new features and a
much improved Web API.

(Demo login is admin/district)

- Dashboard: We have a completely new dashboard which brings lots of new
features. It is focused around search - you can use the search area at the top
to look for and include maps, charts, pivot tables, users, reports by clicking
on Add in the search result. You can now have any number of personal
dashboards - for instance can create one for each subject you find interesting
and easily switch between them. You can put any number of items on each
dashboard and drag-and-drop to arrange them in your preferred order. Maps and
pivot tables can now be embedded directly (previously they appeared as links).
Dashboards can be shared with other users or group of users, just like you do
with charts and pivot tables.

Check it out here.

- Touch-device optimized data visualizer App: We have a new App which lets you
do advanced analysis and visualize your data as a wide range of charts,
including bar, column, line, pie, area. It works similar to current data
visualizer module, only optimized for smartphones and tablets. You can load any
predefined chart and create new charts which later can be saved as favorites.
The app is web-based and therefore completely integrated with the charts you
create in the current visualizer module on the web. It is pretty cool - try it
out on your smartphone or tablet by pointing it to http://apps.dhis2.org/demo
and select smartphone as the log in option, or directly on the web.

- Apps are now completely integrated in the menu system, both in services
menu and in the system overview page, and are now first-class components in
DHIS 2. On the demo you can check it out by looking for Mobile visualizer.
Apps are light-weight web applications which can be uploaded through the user
interface in the App management module under maintenance. Read more about
the app concept and apps in DHIS 2.

The mobile visualizer app can be downloaded from http://appstore.dhis2.org

- The analysis tools - GIS, visualizer (charts) and pivot table - now feature
more flexible selection of organisation units through three modes. Select the
mode by clicking the gear icon under organisation units. You can select
organisation units by levels, for instance you easily select all facilities in
a province by first selecting the province from the tree, then the facility
level in the level drop-down. You can select organisation units by groups, for
instance you can select a province and then all public facilities inside it.
You can also select multiple organisation units as boundaries in GIS. This
has been harmonized and works similarly across all modules.

Screenshot select by level | select by group

- Data surveillance and alerts: We now have a new component for data monitoring
/ surveillance and user alerts. It lets you monitor data, look for outbreaks
and send alerts to users for notifiable conditions like measles, cholera and
yellow fever outbreaks. The solution is an extension of validation rules - you
can set rule type to surveillance (as opposed to validation). With
surveillance rules, you can compare current data on the left side with previous
data on the right side. You can define a sequential sample count implying the
number of preceding values to compare with. You can also define an annual
sample count meaning the number of years to compare for the same period as the
current. The average value will be used and you can define a number of high and
low outliers to be excluded from the average. Monitoring can be scheduled as a
nightly task which checks the data entered since yesterday from data
administration - scheduling. You
can configure validation rules as usual under services - data quality.
You can define which roles of user should be alerted when notifiable conditions
are detected from validation rule groups. Alerts will be delivered as DHIS
messages, which can be configured to be forwarded to email and SMS as usual.

Data surveillance docs here.

- Integration of analysis module: We have integrated and harmonized the GIS
(map), visualizer (chart) and pivot

Hi,

some of you have reported that you get a message saying no filters selected
when loading charts in visualizer after upgrading to 2.12. This issue has now
been fixed. Good news is that to resolve it you can simply restart your
Tomcat/container and the startup routines will take care of it (even without
updating war file).

The 2.12 stable release can be downloaded from here: dhis2.org/downloads . Note
that the 2.12 download will always reflect the latest fixes as we are
automatically building and updating the war file.

regards,

Lars

In the new version of GIS where do we select the orgunit types to display (I

Re: [Dhis2-users] Experiences sending SMS alerts based on datamart indicator thresholds

2012-06-06 Thread wanjala pepela
Thanks Randy,

This will be a good opportunity for the GURUS' of DHIS to use the mobile
application and more so the SMS and the feedbacks.  It will also address the
surveillance issues and some of the areas that may be of high impact
interventions in countries.

Subject: [Dhis2-users] Experiences sending SMS alerts based on datamart
indicator thresholds

Hi all,

We’re looking into using DHIS-2 to send SMS alerts to cell phones when monthly
stock reports indicate that a facility is below a certain threshold.  Is this
supported by the mobile phone reporting module?  Has anyone written code to do
this from outside of DHIS-2?  We thought it might be useful to build this into
the chron job that refreshes the datamart each night.

Thanks,

Subject: [Dhis2-users] DHIS version 2.8 released

Hi all,

DHIS version 2.8 is release. The news this time is:

- Data visualizer plugin: Plugin for embedding the dynamic charts you see in
Data Visualizer module directly in Web pages. Data is loaded from the DHIS
back-end server. Example here:

http://apps.dhis2.org/portal/plugin.html

Documentation here:

http://dhis2.org/doc/snapshot/en/user/html/ch24s07.html

- Tracker tabular report: Interactive analysis tool for all types of tracker
data. Can display data element values and beneficiary attributes and
identifiers. Lets you filter on any of the columns in a table and download the
data to Excel and PDF. Follows the same user interface principles as Data
Visualizer module. Check it out here, for instance by selecting the Delivery
returns program, selecting org unit and data elements and clicking Update:

http://apps.dhis2.org/demo/dhis-web-caseentry/app/index.html

(Demo login is admin/district)

- Search and browse beneficiary history: See the complete history of a
beneficiary from programs and single events by clicking on the blue info icon
in the list of beneficiaries. See it here by going straight down in the org
unit tree and selecting the first facility:

http://apps.dhis2.org/demo/dhis-web-caseentry/patient.action

- Dedicated import-export function for data values: You no longer risk messing
up your meta-data when doing data value import. Data values are now matched on
the stable identifiers of the meta-data (like data elements and org units).

This means that you can safely import data as records will either be imported
if they match your meta-data or ignored if not. It also means that remote
systems can change the names of data elements and org units and still be able
to exchange data values with the central system - records are matched on the
stable identifiers which cannot be changed in the user interface. See the demo:

http://apps.dhis2.org/demo/dhis-web-importexport/displayImportDataValueForm.action?importFormat=xml

- CSV data value import-export: Data can be imported and exported using the CSV
format (as well as the DHIS XML format called DXF). This provides an easy way
to bootstrap DHIS systems from external sources and achieve interoperability
with legacy systems as CSV is very widespread and is easy to contstruct
manually. Check it out here:

http://apps.dhis2.org/demo/dhis-web-importexport/displayDataValueExportForm.action

http://apps.dhis2.org/demo/dhis-web-importexport/displayImportDataValueForm.action?importFormat=csv

Documentation here:

http://dhis2.org/doc/snapshot/en/user/html/ch18s04.html

- Cumulative values in report tables: For each column you can include a
cumulative value column by ticking Include cumulative in the add report table
screen. This enabled you to make nice progress reports like this:

http://apps.dhis2.org/demo/api/reports/Kvg1AhYHM8Q/data.pdf?ou=ImspTQPwCqd

- Reporting rates aggregation over time: The data mart process is now producing
aggregate reporting rates over time. This means for instance that you can get
quarterly and yearly reporting rates for monthly data sets in reports, such as
the one below. Reporting rates are also aggregated in parallel processes which
means performance scales almost linearly with the available processor cores on
your server.

http://apps.dhis2.org/demo/dhis-web-reporting/exportTable.action?uid=xqGIgjysoc6pe=2012-01-01ou=ImspTQPwCqd

- Org unit group set analysis in Data Visualizer: You can now do analysis on
groups and create charts based for instance on facility type and ownership. In
the organisation unit tab select a group set (e.g. Type) from the group set
list and then the parent organisation unit. An example is here:

http://apps.dhis2.org/demo/dhis-web-visualizer/app/index.html?id=wLPFpNTTLE5

-Reporting rates in Data Visualizer: You can now create charts with reporting
rates for all data sets by using the reporting rates tab in the left

Always, targets = than Actual
Every data values is a count which adds up to maximum value 100%
Completeness based on data sets are based on the forms
Completeness based on compulsory data elements are the data entries which must
be filled
completeness based on number of registered data values are every cell is
account and if possible must be filled for you to get 100%. Therefore if the
form is filled and you have not selected complete, then you are likely not see
what you've filled.
Recommend that national level should concentrate more to check Completeness
based on data sets based on the forms that will be more accurate than data

Dear DHIS Users,
Is Data completeness report options working properly? this is an important
feature!

But in Data completeness, when  you select the option that says Based on
number of registered data values  and you select all other option and press
get report. The result does not correspond the fields. For example : Target
does not correspont to the Actual column. which shows differences between
Actual column and Target column(even this keeps happening after filling these
fields. where Target Actual).

Dear all,

We are currently looking at ways of reducing data transfers
(i.e. paper to DHIS).

Has anyone ever set up a DHIS installation where data was
entered “live” i.e. staff use a DHIS-generated form like a tally
sheet (entering data as they see patients). I do not mean in the sense of
entering into a name based record – but an actual tally sheet style form
(to match their existing paper ones) that is then uploaded at end of day and
aggregated into the monthly report.

If you have done this – would appreciate any
insights/tips.

Hi all,

we have released DHIS 2 version 2.4. The news this time:

- Offline data entry: The data entry module - if opened when online -
is operational even without Internet connectivity. Data can be entered
and stored locally while being offline and uploaded to the central
server when online. This means that the online deployment strategy
will be more viable in areas with unstable Internet connectivity. The
total bandwidth usage is greatly reduced since forms no longer are
retrieved from the server for each rendering. For more info on this
feature, read the archive:
https://lists.launchpad.net/dhis2-users/msg00468.html

http://apps.dhis2.org/demo/dhis-web-dataentry/index.action

- New Symbol layer in GIS: Data can be visualized as symbols rather
than colors. The menu system has been improved to allow more space for
the map itself and to emphasize the opportunity to load maps into
separate layers to produce more advanced map views.

http://apps.dhis2.org/demo/dhis-web-mapping/index.action

- Improved data mart performance: Now scalable on the number of CPU
cores providing a near-linear performance boosts as new cores are
added - for instance the processing time for our benchmark database on
a quad-core processor was reduced to close to 1/4.

- Modal dialogs: All popups in the system have been replaced by modal
dialogs - this has proved to be less confusing to inexperienced users.

- Conversations: The messaging system is now organized around
conversations, making it easy to see the full history of an
interaction between a super-user and an end-user for instance.

Hi all,
the road map for the fall of 2011 is ready. You can find it here:
http://dhis2.org/roadmap

There has been many comments and wishes and we have tried to make as many
people happy as possible, at the same time trying to be innovative and take
advantage of the emerging possibilities for web development. The road map shows
the major functionality blueprints, there will of course be additional minor
functions for each release.

Having a road map is good but we reserve the right to make changes - we know
that new requirements appear as DHIS 2 is being implemented in new countries
which might justify re-prioritization. The releases have a two-month cycle and
will continue to be time-boxed, meaning that we push back functionality if it
is not ready by the time of release.

regards, Lars

Date: Friday, June 24, 2011, 5:59 AM

Hi all,
DHIS 2 version 2.3 is released and there are major improvements to GIS, charts
and performance in general. New cool stuff:
- GIS: Relocate facilities on the map. Click on a facility, select relocate
and move it to its correct position. In combination with the Google Hybrid
Satellite map this is a viable alternative to GPS-based positioning of
facilities.

- GIS: New symbol layer. Visualize location and distribution of facilities
based on its type - each type can be assigned an icon.

- GIS: View information sheet for facilities, containing organisation unit
attributes and values for a configurable group of infrastructural data
elements.

http://apps.dhis2.org/demo/dhis-web-mapping/mapping/index.html

- General performance improvements: Most database operations in the systems are
now cached with both improves speed of navigation and moves load from the
database into memory - which is easier to scale when required. Most lists in
the system are either paged or loaded asynchronously which improves the
perceived performance and usability - you can start working on the forms
without waiting for long lists to load completely. Data mart processing time
down 65 %.

- Charts: Data elements can be used in charts. You can also choose between
indicators, periods, and organisation units in charts. Charts can have target
line.
http://apps.dhis2.org/demo/dhis-web-reporting/displayViewChartForm.action

- Data set report: Export to PDF and Excel
http://apps.dhis2.org/demo/dhis-web-reporting/showDataSetReportForm.action

- Provision for number of days for aggregation period in indicator formulas:
Useful e.g. for bed occupancy rate indicators.
- Indicators in custom data entry forms: Used for displaying on-the-fly
calculations, useful e.g. for stock forms / reports. See (contrived) EPI
Stock form.

http://apps.dhis2.org/demo/dhis-web-dataentry/displayForm.action

- User can only create new users with less authority than themselves, useful
for decentralization of user management.
- Feedback function where messages are sent from any user to a configurable
group of users.

- Full support (except map export to image) for Internet Explorer 9.
- For the technically interested: Hibernate upgraded to 1.6, Jquery upgraded to
1.6.1, CKEditor 3.5, CalculatedDataElement and Source object removed,
minimalistic skin, Google API skin no longer required.

- We now have a fresh new 74-page implementation guide, download here:
http://dhis2.org/documentation

- The MyDatamart tool now includes function for generation of Excel pivot
tables connected to the local data mart.

Get WAR file, Live package, MyDatamart, mobile client, source code and sample
data from here:

Listers --
We need to calculate bed occupancy rates.  We have the number of
beds per ward and the number of person-days of bed use per month, but we
need the number of days per month.  Is that available in some way from
the system or are we going to have to key it?
Thanks, Roger

Hi all,

DHIS version 2.1 has been released. As usual you can find WAR file, Live
package and source code here:

http://dhis2.org/downloads

Documentation is lagging slightly behind but will be updated very soon.
Documentation and Java docs can be found here:

http://dhis2.org/documentation

New stuff:

- Report generation is now really fast and works well in multi-user
environments.
- GIS can have system and user map views - ie users can create their own views
without seeing each others while still being able to see the views the
super-users have put in.
- GIS has option for going back in the map view history.
- Reports can have completeness data.
- Financial period types based on April, July and October.

Details here:

https://blueprints.launchpad.net/dhis2/+milestone/2.1

regards,

the DHIS 2 development team
