[DDN] showing how ichat av 3 works

2005-04-07 Thread Phil Shapiro

hi everyone -

last year i taught a workshop showing how ichat videoconferencing
works. i captured a quicktime from that workshop and posted it on
the web at
http://www.wap.org/imovie/videochat.html

you can also see this quicktime at
http://www.writersforliteracy.org/richjaeggi5152004b.mov

in a few weeks ichat 3 will be coming out (in mac os 10.4) and i'd
like to create a similar quicktime showing ichat 3 in action -- with
4 people videoconferencing at the same time.

i'm pretty sure i can find a location here in the washington dc-area
that has a fiber optic internet -- with 2 megabits upstream and 5
(or 15) megabits/sec. downstream.

i'm on the lookout for 3 other locations around the country who
would like to appear in this quicktime. we'll get the best results
if you have a dual-processor G4 (or dual processor G5) on your side
and fast upstream bandwidth on your side. i'm game for trying this
with other mac hardware, though.

this quicktime videoconference would take place sometime in mid to
late may, 2005.
i only need to capture 10 or 15 minutes -- just to show people what it's
like.

i have a hunch the slashdot web site might link to this, if the
quicktime is well lit and sounds clear.we can include a link
to your organization or company within the quicktime.

thanks for letting me know if you'd like to be in on this.

- phil

[DDN] The New DDN Articles: CyberGeography, Educational Media, Open Networks and Using Skype, for starters

2005-04-07 Thread Cedar Pruitt
Dear DDN Members,

I wanted to bring your attention to this month's freshly posted articles
on the homepage of the Digital Divide Network. We're pleased to feature an
interview with cyber-mapper Martin Dodge:

*
CyberGeography: A Conversation with Martin Dodge

The possibilities of the Internet are always framed by what users
visualize when they consider the virtual landscape. How does the Internet
reflect, or connect to, the physical world? Martin Dodge, a renown
cybergeographer, expounds on the subject of mapping cyberspace, and
explores what his results mean for educators, technologists, community
activists and Internet users around the physical world.
*

We also feature an interview with educational media specialist and Harvard
professor Chris Dede, who defines for us the three interfaces that will
define new educational practices throughout the next decade. Mike Chege
takes on the "stupid revolution," explaining why the Internet's
architectural simplicity could spell success for the digitally
disenfranchised. We look at wireless in rural Africa, Phil Shapiro
explores the community media potential of the Internet tool Skype, and
school blogevangelist Will Richardson explains why blogs in schools are a
good thing. And that's not all!

Visit http://www.digitaldivide.net to read the latest articles and weigh
in on today's discussions.

[DDN] Help make PodcasterCon

2005-04-07 Thread Brian Russell
Hello all,
Recently I set the ball rolling for an event called PodcasterCon. My hope
is that podcasters and those wanting to learn about podcasting will work
*together* to make this event. The URL is www.podcastercon.org

Here is the statement of purpose as of now:
PodcasterCon is a free users conference about podcasting. The focus will
be on learning. In effect it is an anti-expo without swag, without product
promotion, and a way to keep podcasting fun!

Please come on over to the wiki at www.podcastercon.org/wiki
* register a user name
* login
* start editing the pages.

PodcasterCon will be held at the University of North Carolina in Chapel
Hill, NC sometime in Jan or Feb of 2006. We are working as a group to
finalize the exact date.

My sincere hope is we can all learn a lot and have fun. I hope you can
participate in making this event happen.

One of the questions I always have about this is a matter of parts.
Where a lot of these machines may be donated, they may be donated
because parts have become a problem or service has become too expensive
when compared to new machines.

While I like to see such machines used instead of not used, I often
wonder whether the long term consequences of labor and the costs of
parts balances the use of the machines in the first place. Have there
been studies done that indicated either way, over a period of 36 months
(2 evolutions of Moore's Law)?

World's Greatest Global Teachers Win $10,000!
Global SchoolNet Announces 2005 Online Shared Learning Champions

[San Diego, April 7, 2005] Throughout the world educators are asking,
"How can I prepare my students to succeed in an increasingly
inter-connected and borderless world?" Global SchoolNet's Online Shared
Learning Award recognizes champion educators, who have made significant
contributions to global collaborative learning. Ten teachers were
selected for this honor from across the USA, Australia, Canada, Israel,
Japan, and Uzbekistan.

The top award winners are Janet Banstable from Percy Julian Middle
School in Oak Park, Illinois, United States and Rene de Vries from De
Wadden Primary School in Haarlem, Netherlands. Each receives a cash
award of $2,500 and a trip to the National Education Computing
Conference in Philadelphia, June 25-June 30, 2005 where the awards will
be presented.

In addition, five finalist champions each receive $250 USD.
* Brenda Dyck from Calgary, Alberta, Canada
* Marsha Goren from Petach Tikva, Israel, Israel
* Karen Kliegman from Albertson, New York, United States
* Stephanie Moore from St. Louis, Missouri, United States
* Jennifer Wagner from Corona, California, United States

And, three honorable mention awardees are recognized.
* Adrian Bruce from Ballina, NSW , Australia
* Natalya Hamidova from Karshi, Kashkadarya, Uzbekistan
* Morey Norkin from Saga-Ken, Japan

"Global SchoolNet was founded twenty years ago by teachers who believed
that the real promise of technology is in its ability to create people
connections," said Al Rogers, Global SchoolNet co-founder. "It is our
core belief that the Internet is not merely a library of information --
but a conduit for communication and a way to connect with one another."

Winner Janet Barnstable describes her teaching style as "Socratic," and
says, "My real job is thinking about what needs to be learned and
setting up situations where students can find out the answers for
themselves while collaborating with their peers." She believes using the
Internet to collaborate has opened up the world for her and her
students. According to Barnstable, "I've never learned so much and so
quickly as I have by working with teachers from around the world." She
goes on to say, "But, what students describe as unique teaching is
actually what I've learned works well during the 43 years that I've been
in the classroom." Her original projects include CyberDictionary,
CyberTeen Magazine, and Postcards from Paul.

"In order for today's youth to become world citizens, we must create
opportunities where they will gain a better understanding of their own
future plans, the conditions that will affect the future of their
community, and issues of global importance," said Dr. Yvonne Marie
Andres, President and co-founder of the Global SchoolNet Foundation.

Winner Rene de Vries teaches in Haarlam, Netherlands and engages his
primary students in future-thinking authentic research about wildlife
preservation, historical communities, and service-learning. His unique
projects include Animal Diaries and CityQuest. A year ago he launched
the Ukunda schools project to raise awareness about life in the small
Kenyan village of Ukunda, and to provide help for Ukunda schools. De
Vries says, "We all share the vision that if we bring our students
together online and let them collaborate on projects. that this will
help to bring some peace and happiness to the world."

Under the stewardship of these exemplary educators, students around the
globe interact with one another in meaningful educational, cultural, and
scientific projects. The opportunities are diverse -- ranging from
studying marine life and sea turtles, to learning physics by rolling
hard boiled eggs, to promoting bicycle safety, to creative story telling
and sign language.

GSN's annual award program saw nominations from nine countries including
candidates from Australia, Canada, Germany, Estonia, Israel and Japan.
The entire award process is paperless, and managed by GSN's innovative
Web-based system that solicits nominations, obtains candidate
information, collects testimonials, and allows rubric-based judging. You
can learn more about the outstanding accomplishments all of the Online
Shared Learning Champions at www.globalschoolnet.org
