[DDN] Heroes, pioneers, technology for positive social change, and the Dirk Award

2005-04-13 Thread Deborah Elizabeth Finn
Dear Colleagues,

Since 2000, the Riders movement (also known as the eRiders or Circuit
Riders movement), has recognized outstanding achievements with the
Dirk Award. This year marks the first time that nonprofit technology
professionals and the communities that they serve can go online to
nominate their heroes and pioneers:

http://www.dirkaward.org/nominations/index.html

The award began as something of an affectionate joke during the early
years of the annual Circuit Rider Roundup, which was then organized by
TechRocks. According to the nominating committee:

The Dirk Award is named after its inaugural recipient, Dirk Slater,
the rabble-rousing LINC Project Rider who received the award not only
for his accomplishments as a rider but also to embarrass him for an
impassioned speech he gave at the event. During this speech, which had
everyone in tears and on the edge of their seats, Dirk implored the
riders to organize themselves into a powerful and supportive
community. He implored the crowd to acknowledge that circuit and
eRiding was and is inspired by principles of social justice and
community organizing that riders support with their technology
services. The group thanked him with a little golden man.

These days, the Circuit Rider Roundup takes the form of the annual
Nonprofit Technology Conference, and is organized by the Nonprofit
Technology Enterprise Network. Dirk Slater continues to serve as a
leader and an inspiration in the field, as do the other Dirk Award
recipients: Bill Lester, Teresa Crawford, Art McGee, Katrin Verclas,
and Allen Gunn.

In general, I don't attach a tremendous amount of significance to
professional awards, and tend to entertain an assortment of worries
about how awards (rather than the work itself) can be mistaken for
achievement. However, I think the world of Dirk, and I love the
spirit in which this award was created and is perpetuated.

(By the way, a version of this item can also be found on my blog at
http://blog.deborah.elizabeth.finn.com/blog/_archives/2005/4/8/563996.html.)

Re: [DDN] international conference calls

2005-04-13 Thread John Hibbs
Brian: I am the imagineeer and chief conductor to Global Learn Day,
now in it's ninth year. 19 of the 24 hours of this event come from
real time articipants outside of the United States. We use VOIP very
successfully, provided by talking communities.com. We also use the
telephone bridged through a nice conference system provided by
www.mrconference.com. We bridge the Net to the phone and the phone to
the net using some easy and very cheap devices.

Now this does not answer the questions about international phone
calls, so let me address that.

In those few cases where our speakers cannot use talking communities,
and want to speak over the phone, we rarely have complaints about the
international cost of their call to our telephone conference center.
But in those rare cases, we and the speakers work hard to find very
cheap phone cards. Rarely does it cost more than 20 U.S. cents per
minute from almost anywhere in the world. Given that very few talk on
the phone for more than an hour, this means a cost to the speaker of
about US$12.00 - less than the cost of the taxi from most downtowns
to the airport.

We have not had too much luck with Skype. In fact we have some
problems bridging it. I don't think we will have much trouble using
www.talkingcommunities.com - which now allows Mac OSX platforms.

I can probably get www.talkingcommunites.com free.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to hold a international conference

We can't afford a toll free number and cheap cell phone minutes are

RE: [DDN] apple feels learning happens only at k-12 schools and colleges

2005-04-13 Thread Dr. Steve Eskow
I use this medium rather than his blog or one I create to respond to Phil
Shapiro's criticism of Apple's Tiger campaign because I am one of those who
is more comfortable with the easy give and take of email dialog than I am
with the formalities of the blog.

(That may change.)

The notion that Apple does not know that learning takes place outside of the
school setting is wide of the mark: anyone who knows the history of the two
Steves and their work and statements over the years knows of their belief in
the power of nonformal learning.

There is a simple explanation for Apple's current focus on the formal
educational settings which does not involve ignorance of or indifference to
other possibilities for teaching and learning.

In the early days of school computing Apple had the lion's share of the
school and college market: the Apple 2 and the early Macintosh's were
everywhere, and all the others including Tandy and Morrow and Eagle--and
IBM--far behind.

That of course has changed, and currently Apple has only a minority share
of the school and college market.

The campaign that Phil criticizes is nothing more than a focused marketing
campaign aimed at getting Apple back into contention in the school and
college market.

This focus on a target is of course how marketing works, and does not at all
mean that Apple does not know or appreciate the nonschool contributions of
nonacademics and nonschool settings to learning.

hi everyone -

apple computer feels that learning happens only at K-12 schools and
colleges. that point of view is ingrained into their corporate
culture.

see apple's tiger educator evaluation program for one more instance of this.
http://www.apple.com/education/tigerevaluation/

it's a pretty sad reflection on the company that its outlook is so limited.

we who are outside-of-school educators feel that learning goes on
everywhere at all times. and we feel you don't have to be a K-12 teacher
or a college professor to be an impassioned and effective educator.

apple hasn't yet heard of outside-of-school learning. we need to teach
them. the question on the table is can a company involved in education
learn. can they learn? let's hope they can.

if you feel this is an issue that needs some public attention,
you can link from your blog to the blog posting

2005-04-13 Thread Phil Shapiro

hi DDN community -

some happy news to share this evening. a teacher friend of mine
in the district of columbia public schools has been inducted into
the national teacher's hall of fame. http://www.nthf.org

i volunteered at john mahoney's school for the FIRST robotics
competition in january and february of this year and got to see
his work up close. remarkable is all i can say.

   if you're interested, see

powerbullet presenter flash slideshow from the Banneker 2005
Robotics team. we used the free version of powerbullet presenter
to create this. http://www.powerbullet.com

i've asked john mahoney to join the DDN web site. he'll be joining
soon.

read about his background and interests at
http://www.nthf.org/inductee/05mahoney.htm

i'd just ask that you go light on sending him emails as he
typically works 15 to 18 hour work days. his passion is in
teaching calculus and advanced placement statistics. he brings a
lot to the DDN community -- and we also bring a lot to him.

our strength is our unity of purpose.

Re: [DDN] international conference calls

2005-04-13 Thread Tito Morais
Hi!

Does anyone have any ideas on how to hold a international conference
 call on the CHEAP?

You can setup a conference call for free at
http://www.freeconference.com and advise your international callers to
use call cards. For instance, I'm based in Portugal and use call cards
for teleclasses that take place in the US via a phone line. A calling
card costs me 5 and gives me 300 minutes to the US.

For calling cards, try the following links:
USA:
Australia:
Canada:
United Kingdom:
Other countries:
   - http://www.1st4phonecards.com/callcalc.htm or keep searching the Internet.

p.s. we want an AUDIO conversation to record

FreeConference offers the possibility to record the call but on their
paid services. Alternatively you can use
http://www.audiostrategies.com to record your call.

I hope this helps.

Best regards

Pope Podcast Hints At Broadcast Revolution
(News Online: 11/04/2005)
URL: http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200504/s1342195.htm

As millions of pilgrims streamed into Rome this past week, a Dutch
priest led Internet listeners on an intimate audio tour that allowed
them to pay one last visit to Pope John Paul II before he was laid to
rest.

... On Catholic Insider, listeners hear Father Roderick banter
with students camped out in St Peter's Square and describe the Pope
lying in state in the basilica.

It's beautiful, it really looks like he's sleeping, he whispers as
a choir sings in the background.

Thousands of podcasts can be found through directories like Podcast
Alley (http://www.podcastalley.com), while listeners can
automatically download new shows as they become available using free
software like iPodder (http://www.ipodder.org)

For now, it is a cottage industry dominated by the likes of Father
Roderick, a parish priest from the Netherlands whose low-key charm
and you-are-there narratives bring the church's pomp and circumstance
down to a human scale.
