With regard to the community technology centres we are currently developing in the Bahamas and Caribbean, the import duties are completely waived with regard to hardware, software and training supplies. That being said, we occasionally encounter the 7% stamp tax, which can sometimes be waived by the pertinent Minister in charge. The investment authority for the given country is usually an excellent resource for such discussions. [DDN] intercepting donated computers offered to schools in the u.s.
hi everyone - in case you're looking for donated computers for your digital divide project or organization, here in the united states donated computers are often offered to schools. most schools that i know of do not accept donated computers, because it takes more tech support work to support a patchwork of computers that it does to support a uniform series of new computers. if you know a teacher or other person who works at the school, you can intercept these offers of donations by having the offers forwarded to you. hopefully the people making the offers are courteous enough to make such offers via email -- so that they can easily be forwarded. what kinds of donated computers are offered to schools. sometimes they're old, but sometimes they're relatively recently. back in 2001 when i was placing donated computers in children's homes, we i placed some pentium 3 donated computers -- and some blue-and-white G3's macs. these days, early G4 macs are entering the donation stream. i hope this suggestion proves useful to others on this list. for those of you on this list who are overseas and are not able to access a steady stream of donated computers, let's try to find ways of getting some donated computers your way. the best way of doing so is for you to post messages to the list telling about the work you're doing and the kinds of computers (and other technology) that would let you expand your project or organization. some of the small form factor computers entering the donation stream, such as the dell optiplex series, are well suited for shipping overseas. - phil -- Phil Shapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.his.com/pshapiro/ (personal) http://teachme.blogspot.com (weblog) http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/pshapiro (technology access work) http://mytvstation.blogspot.com/ (video and rich media) "We all live under the same sky, but we don't all have the same horizon." -- Dr. Konrad Adenauer ___ DIGITALDIVIDE mailing list DIGITALDIVIDE@mailman.edc.org http://mailman.edc.org/mailman/listinfo/digitaldivide To unsubscribe, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message.
