Re: [Fwd: Re: [DDN] Closing the Digital Divide with Service-Learning]
>>Jayne... How does your pool of volunteers find out about opportunities? Is there a way for an organization to submit a profile or list of volunteer possibilities? Clarification -- UNITeS is not a placement agency. It neither recruits nor places volunteers. Instead, it: -- offers resources for volunteers using ICT as part of their service in developing countries and with underserved communities, regardless of what organization they are serving under -- promotes volunteer involvement as essential to ICT4D succcess. UNITeS has no "pool of volunteers." As for the United Nations Volunteers programme -- people apply to be UNVs and, if accepted, are placed in a roster (only a very, very small percentage of people make the cut), and then, if an opportunity comes up that matches their rostered profile, they are contacted. Volunteers are placed for six months to two years. If you are interested in involving UN Volunteers in your program, you need to contact UNV. Their contact info is at www.unvolunteers.org; you can also contact the UNDP office nearest to the potential UNV placement (UNV is a part of UNDP). Also -- I'm no longer affiliated with UNV. -- <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Jayne Cravens Bonn, Germany Services for Mission-Based Orgs www.coyotecommunications.com Open University Development Studies www.coyotecommunications.com/development Contact me www.coyotecommunications.com/contact.html <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ___ DIGITALDIVIDE mailing list DIGITALDIVIDE@mailman.edc.org http://mailman.edc.org/mailman/listinfo/digitaldivide To unsubscribe, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message.

Re: [DDN] Closing the Digital Divide with Service-Learning
Hello Siobhan, Thanks for sharing this article about service-learning. We too feel that service has an important role in bridging divides. We are partnering with several other organizations to launch a program in August to create the first non-governmental and multi-lateral year-long service program in the field of education technology. We feel that there is significant expertise around the world and that year-long international volunteers can be a powerful way in which skills, knowledge and wisdom can be exchanged to help bridge the divide. We are committed to south-south exchanges and to the philosophy that there are unmet needs in every country, which can be met by skilled persons--regardless of where they live. This program is the World Education Corps (http://www.worldeducationcorps.org) In this pilot year, the first 10 volunteers, all with experience in education technology, will depart for 10 days of orientation and training at Oxford University in August and then fly to their host countries for a year of service in ICT/education. The first exchanges will include someone from: Argentina going to Ghana Uganda going to the USA Pakistan going to Nigeria Lebanon going to China USA going to Jordan Ghana going to Uganda USA going to Argentina Tanzania going to Pakistan Uganda going to India Uzbekistan going to Tanzania The program will expand in subsequent years to include significantly more volunteers and countries. We hope that members of this list will share the WEC volunteer applications with qualified persons. The first year all placements are in education technology settings, but technology/health will be another focus in year 2.
