Re: [digitalradio] PSK frquencies

2006-03-08 Thread John Bradley

bonjour Yves, welcome back!!!

You can find PSk at 3580, 7070, 14070, etc all on
USB. Usual power output is about 30 watts, to avoid overloading and

affecting multiple QSO's.

There are now a wide variety of other
soundcard modes, notably OLIVIA. almost as good as CW under poor
conditions.

I have seen a few VE2's lately on 20, and will
watch for you

  Hi!
After four years away from PSK, where should I
  look for PSK QSO's?
I used to work them on 14071.0 LSB.
Are they still there, and what other frequencies
  should I look at?

RE: [digitalradio] MULTIPSK CW

2006-03-08 Thread Dave
A 50% cpu load seems really high, Patrick. WinWarbler consumes less than 1%
of a 1.5 ghz Pentium 4 when generating CW via software. It uses ticks from
TimerMM.dll to drive a state machine. What sort of timer are you using?

Hello Bill and Paul,

Multipsk can directly key the transceiver (I use it this way). However, it
is not advised under Windows XP because it takes about 50 % of the computing

power (due to the obligation to manage a pseudo "timer").

The most simple to do CW is to do it as PSK31 (in USB).

[digitalradio] New rules/description for Digitalradio Group

2006-03-08 Thread Andrew O'Brien
The description for this group has been amended:

---
This is a meeting place to discuss amateur radio digital
applications such as RTTY, CW, PSK31,PSK63, MFSK16, Olivia-MFSK,
Contestia,RTTYM, Chip64, DominoEXj, THROB, ALE, PACTOR, AMTOR,
HELL, SSTV, Digital SSTV, and more. There are several reflectors
dedicated to these separate modes but this group focuses on ALL
digital modes. Software applications such as MixW, Logger32,
MMVARI, MMTTY, MultiPSK, Hamscope, Winwarbler/DXLAB, Digipan, etc,
etc, are often discussed. Theory of digital communications is
encouraged. Experimentation with new digital modes is also
encouraged. Questions from newcomers are welcome.

A sister group, Digipol, exists at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/digipol . Digipol is a separate area
for discussion of digital radio policy matters such as band
allocation, ARRL and FCC digital policies, unattended operation
debates, etc, etc. Debates about the aforementioned should be on
digipol only. If in doubt, contact the group owner (Andy K3UK).

The follow will be added to the rules for the group.

"please avoid posting messages relating to policy matters such as
the FCC/IARU rules about digital communications. Posts about this
topic , bandwidth allocation, and the whole PACTOR/unattended
operations debate, usually produce heated arguements. We want to
avoid such arguements here, BUT you are free to post about these
topics in our sister group , Digipol
(http://groups.yahoo.com/group/digipol ) .

Occasional announcememts about changes/propsals to digital
communication rules are allowed, just avoid the endless debate.

If you violate these rules, you will have your status changed
to "moderated status", policy/debate posts will be forwarded to the
Digipol group."

[digitalradio] Re: MULTIPSK CW

2006-03-08 Thread kd0ca
You will need to look at the "modes" setup button, and you can tell
the program to use only audio to the rig on CW, or you can select
audio plus PTT (keying through RTS line) or just the PTT keying alone.

If you have a transistor switch or optoisolator and switch in the RTS
circuit, it will key the rig in "real" CW. I am so blessed to have a
Ten-Tec Argonaut V, as the PTT for the rig doubles as hard keying when
I am in CW mode. MultiPSK works great for CW transmit and receive for me.

Most important in receiving CW via computer, is to narrow the IF and
reduce the RF gain (or use an attenuator). If the CW is too loud and
above the threshhold of the decoding algorithm, it seems that is
copies badly in EVERY CW reception program. And nearly all CW RXC
programs do a very good job when you "starve" them for a signal a
littel bit. :-)

CwGet is the best, bar none. MultiPSK is very good, however. It
seems to me MultiPSK does all things well. (Kudos to Patrick)

[digitalradio] Next Solar Cycle Will Be Bigger

2006-03-08 Thread Thomas Giella KN4LF
That prediction is utter nonsense. A space weather forecast
model is even more useless than for weather forecasting. NASA scientists
have used the same reckless abandon in declaring that man induced global
warming is occurring.

It appears that cycle 24 will be the "smallest" not largest in
many cycles. We are currently in a multidecadal oscillation that features
ever smaller sunspot cycles.

Cycle 23 was pretty dismal for DX on 15, 12 and 10 meters,
compared to previous cycle peaks. Cycle 24 will be as bad or worse.

Cycle 23 will bottom out sometime in 2007. If you check the
solar flux numbers they are still running in the 70's. When they
consistently run in the mid 60's then we are at the bottom of cycle 23.

She says the new solar seismic data from SOHO has enabled better
long term sunspot prediction than ever before. A 40 year cycle

2006-03-08 Thread Box SisteenHundred
That IS cw Paul.

In reality, that's how your rig probably generates CW

By injecting an audio tone into a SSB transmitter.

When you say won't do "regular" cw... do you mean
keying a circuit open and closed so you can connect it
to the key jack of your rig?

RE: [digitalradio] CW program???

2006-03-08 Thread Dave
WinWarbler can generate CW in software, via a WinKey interface like
MicroHam's MicroKeyer, or via an external modem like the KAM or PK232. CW
decoding requires an external modem.

WinWarbler also includes a phone voice keyer, as well as support for PSK31,
PSK63, and RTTY. A common user interface and macro facility are used with
all supported modes.

MixW does a good job, so does Hamcope. Ham radio Deluxe "may" add CW
capability later this year. I think Winwarbler may do CW these days, not
sure.

[digitalradio] Re: [Packet] OT: Attention Software Authors

2006-03-08 Thread doc
John,

Could your new list include Apple, Linux, and MS apps
as well as a Linux menu? I have your Rigblaster Plus and
could only locate three Linux apps in one folder on the CD.
The menu structure and most content is MS-specific.

Also, could you include Amateur DTV apps for all three
operating systems? DTV for Amateur Radio looks like an
exciting new(er) mode and I have just created a discussion
list http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dtv-ham/ to host the
gathering of information.

I have not yet used it and only recently even heard
about it. Sure looks like a great mode for emergency
and hobby image communications.

To decode CW, the program that I found that is the most powerful is
called CWGet. If you do a google search for CWGet, you'll find it.
There are many settings for it in RX mode which make it very good at
copying cw and it is shareware.

Re: [digitalradio] Re: Cheapest foray in to Pactor

2006-03-08 Thread KV9U
While this is not "the" graph I was referring to, the last graph on the
web site is very similar in showing Pactor 2 and 3 working down to
inaudible levels. The Pactor 1 mode that is shown working down to about
-5 db S/N uses the SCS product and works better than any of the other
hardware or software products at this time for that mode. My experience
(many years ago) with Pactor 1 using a KAM was not that good, since you
could still hear the signal even though it would loose the link. Same
with Clover II. (Even though there were some at the time who claimed it
worked on inaudible signals, but I never found that to be true).

The Jones graph is helpful in that it has a logarithmic y axis showing
the data throughput. This helps to better see the knee of the curves for
the modes. I think that you will find that for fixed station operation,
PSK31 will work much lower into Gaussian noise, but with automotive
ignition noise it was severely affected. What they don't test against is
the newer digital sound card modes that have similar modulation to
Pactor modes and have advanced FEC. In some cases, I think you will find
that MFSK16 and Olivia will compete favorably under the worst
conditions, but of course they do not scale up like P2 and P3.

I have been impressed with how well P2 and P3 can work with only a -5
S/N ratio since it is a magnitude better than anything else. Since their
modulation scheme is not that different from other schemes, one wonders
how they do it and why other programmers can not meet this level of
performance, even if a non ARQ mode.

Rick, KV9U

Re: [digitalradio] Poll results for digitalradio

2006-03-08 Thread John Becker
Maybe that 97.5 % just got so tried of hearing
the same old complaint over and over and over
and over again. Some of us understand that
this will happen no matter what the mode.

I even hate to bring it up again fearing to start
it all over.

Some of the ideas that I have seen are just to far
out of it and put a undo burden on one group of
operators. CW ID every 5minutes and not
transmitting for 10 minutes after asking if the
frequency is in use. If it's good got one it's
should also be good for all.

I'll second that. The Kam needs about an S3 signal
or better to work. the Pk232 can go into the noise.

Re: [digitalradio] CW program???

2006-03-08 Thread Andrew O'Brien
MixW does a good job, so does Hamcope. Ham radio Deluxe "may" add CW
capability later this year. I think Winwarbler may do CW these days,
not sure.

[digitalradio] Re: Poll results for digitalradio

2006-03-08 Thread scottpa1960
Tonight is the first time in about a month that I even looked on this
reflector. What kept me away was this big discussion about the
unattended pactor discussion. Now the votes are in, unfortunately
since I purposely stayed away, I didn't get my vote. Watching paint
dry is more interesting to me than these great debates that we have no
control over nor will we ever pursuade the ARRL or FCC either way. Our
hands are tied and we're at the mercy of the FCC and ARRL. I have an
opinion on this but I'd rather not get this discussion fired up again,
because it serves no purpose because we aren't going to change
anything anyway.

[digitalradio] CW program???

2006-03-08 Thread Tom
What does everyone recommend to copy and transmit CW?
I use TRX-Manager as well as Ham Radio Deluxe to control the radio.
I dont want to use a TNC just the computer itself.

Thanks
