[digitalradio] Re: Anyone for 40M ALE test tonight?
You could reconfigure your CI-V interface to take power from a wall wart or some other convenient source of DC power. That would eliminate any dependence on the ALE software properly configuring the modem-control signals for power supply duty. 73, Dave, AA6YQ --- In digitalradio@yahoogroups.com, KV9U <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > A good point and I did consider adding this when I built my homebrew > CI-V interface. Yes, the 735 requires a CI-V level converter. You can purchase third- party units for ~$30, or build one yourself for under $10; let me know if you want a schematic. The 735 has a longterm reliability problem with VFO capacitors; ask on the Icom reflector for the gory details. 73, Dave, AA6YQ --- In digitalradio@yahoogroups.com, doc <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Does the 735 require an Icom CT-17 CI-V level converter? > > Also, I seem to recall that there was some key component > in the 735 that became unobtanium back a few years, cpu > or finals or something. Don't make it sound like you are the only out there Jim. I still use a pair of 28's for RTTY and only the machines. (just between you and me, maybe some day the software writers will fix their software so it send a CR/LF after 72 charters. Re: [digitalradio] Re: Another look at ALE
While fairly technical at times, the one thing that stood out is that the computational power and especially memory available (3G cell stuff and maybe 256K) is not that large. So it could be implemented. However, this appears more for multicasting in the case of the "fountain codes." He indicated that the coding community is moving toward replacing turbo codes with irregular LDPC but I do not understand how this stuff works. If I understand it correctly, it is the raptor codes that have the FEC structure. It is amazing that we can access this kind of multimedia presentation on a time shifted basis and at no charge! 73, Rick, KV9U Leigh L Klotz, Jr. wrote: >You might like this talk, which is available in audio and video >formats: > > > http://www.parc.com/cms/get_article.php?id=344 > >It covers Turbo, Tornado, and LDPC codes. If the STOP pulse gets mutilated the receiving shaft doesn't stop where it should, but just keeps going around, and then you are going to lose several characters before it gets back in sync. An electronic selector can stop on a dime. So there is an advantage to using an electronic regenerative repeater between your TU and your mechanical teleprinter. Back when K6STI was marketing his RITTY sound card software - that was the first RTTY DSP soundcard software so far as I know - I got him to add a feature that the computer puts out cleaned-up Baudot when it is receiving. That let me run it into a hardware teleprinter and get as good copy as I could get with the software. I wish MMTTY and the other soundcard software would do likewise. Need a Digital mode QSO? Re: [digitalradio] Re: Anyone for 40M ALE test tonight?
A good point and I did consider adding this when I built my homebrew CI-V interface. Because power is supplied to the interface via the RTS and/or the DTR lines and you can turn that off and on with some programs (e.g., Commander) via software control. But because Commander provides the necessary PTT controls to the ICOM series of radios via the CI-V port, I did not see any value complicating the design with the additional PTT switching. I am not sure if the PC-ALE program provides the necessary on function for the DTR so that there would be operating voltage present. So it may not work even if I did add the new circuit since I would have to turn off the always on RTS line as it would be used for controlling. 73, Rick, KV9U Dave Bernstein wrote: >If the ALE software can only key the transceiver via RTS, you could >build a one-transistor RTS-to-PTT interface for the transceiver >control serial port. It makes it harder to respond to a > CQ call. Jason, This is a sort of funny problem about Windows, or so I have been told. The DLL that drives the sound card can result in having a slight offset in the way it makes sound (TX drive) and inputs sound (RX). So here's what you can do about it. 1) Check that you have not accidentally engaged your RIT. I have done that a few times by accident and that will cause the problem you describe. 2) I'm not sure if DigiPan lets you adjust your sample rates, but MixW does, and I would suggest that you download and try it, it will run fine for 10 days in a "Trial mode", then you can decide if it's worth your time and money to register it. By the way, this is not meant as a knock against DigiPan or MultiPSK, I just know more about MixW. In MixW there are settings for offsets on the sound card. It's a bit beyond a simple message board posting to explain all the ends and outs, but there are some good explanations and what not on how to calibrate in MixW on another Yahoo group dedicated to MixW. 3) Calibrate your RX side against WWV. By using WWV, you get a nice stable signal, and your sample rate on the RX side should be adjusted so that you get nice strait lines. Remember you are in effect sampling an analog with a digital sampler, sort of like timing a car with a strobe light. Sampling too fast or too slow makes the line not strait and you get a slanted line when you look at WWV. In MixW, you have a place in the Sound card configuration menu to crank in some correction factor for the differences. Again, the docs for MixW describes it better than I can, and there are postings over on the MixW forum that talks about it much better than I can. 4) Download a program called CheckSR. You can google search for it. The program has instructions which will tell you more, but it basically puts a signal out, then takes it back in via your sound card and tells you how much of an offset you have. I hope you find the above helpful. 73 Steve N6CRR Need a Digital mode QSO? Andrew O'Brien wrote: I'm no expert on this but I guess it depends on what you mean "doing ALE". Any radio that you can connect to a soundcard will "do ALE" via PC-ALE , but perhaps only on a single frequency. Ideally you should have a radio that provides rig control via PC-ALE, AND one that can scan frequencies at a fast enough rate to monitor the ALE channels. My old TS440 can achieve good rig control but it scans at one channel per 2-3 seconds , the more modern radios seem capable of several channels per second. This allows them to scan ALL the HF ALE frequencies efficiently. Although my TS440 can scan slowly, an additional issue is that when it switches bands , mechanical relays are activated. Constantly scanning would likely wear the relays out over time. I usually only scan 2-3 frequencies at a time, within the same band. Obviously this limits the deficiency of my ALE efforts. So, although a $400 rig , like a TS440, will "do" ALE, you may have to move up to the $600-700 range to get a used radio with a good scanning How can I get TS440 S working with PC-ALE, rig is not in radio type list I have PC-ALE 1.061 installed -Tommi oh7jjt- rate. -- Andy K3UK Fredonia, New York. [digitalradio] Re: Anyone for 40M ALE test tonight?
If the ALE software can only key the transceiver via RTS, you could build a one-transistor RTS-to-PTT interface for the transceiver control serial port. This interface would be ignored with the rest of your soundcard software (which does tx-rx switching via CI-V commands), but would allow the ALE software to tx-rx switch without your having to move cables around. 73, Dave, AA6YQ --- In digitalradio@yahoogroups.com, KV9U <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > I did try the Generic setting with different parameters. Re: [digitalradio] Anyone for 40M ALE test tonight?
I did try the Generic setting with different parameters. I am not sure of what this does as it does not seem to work with the CI-V. I tried using the Pro 2's address in the box called Radio ID but this did not really do anything. I used 8, N, 1, for the other parameters. I do have a Ten Tec Pegasus that I could try out, but with newer computers that no longer have comports, I would have to physically switch the USB --> COM cable as well as the audio lines. No exactly very practical considering that all the other sound card modes work so well with the ICOM rig through the CI-V. 73, Rick, KV9U Andrew O'Brien wrote: >Did you try the Generic setting in PC-ALE? > >On 3/17/06, KV9U <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > I have the program on my computer, but have not figured out how to get > > it to key up the ICOM Pro 2 via the CI-V port. > > > > > > > > Need a Digital mode QSO? I use an IC-735 for ALE on MARSWorks fine but it limit it to groups of frequencies between relay clicks.
