Re: [digitalradio] Throb

2006-05-30 Thread Kevin der Kinderen

Thanks for joining in Jim. I've not used that mode in ages.

Right after we were done I had another QSO with Bill, N9DSJ. Then I heard KB9LNC in a THROB QSO with HK4QHD. I guess it's THROB night on 40.

[digitalradio] Re: Mono mic input?

2006-05-30 Thread Skip Teller

Using a mono plug on the Mic input of the soundcard is no
problem.

Using a mono plug on the soundcard speaker output shorts the
two channels and can burn out the audio amp. Been there - done
that!

Re: [digitalradio] Mono mic input?

2006-05-30 Thread KV9U

The sound cards typically provide stereo sound at the minimum. It is
generally not a good idea to use monoral plugs in a stereo jack since
you may not make the correct connections, or worse, could short out an
output causing damage. Of course you don't usually use both channels for
operating the sound card modes and make the connection to one channel
and thus to the monoral connections at the device on the other end.

I think we gave everything except  what was asked

Yes,  you can use the mic connector on your soundcard, just be aware the level is "hotter" and keep the level down.

Microphones are mono, but have a third wire for powering condenser mics - hence the "stereo" plug and the need for any extension cable to be "stereo".  If I recall correctly, the tip is power, it's the middle ring that's the audio input, so any attempt at using mono connectors just shorts out the audio input.
