2010-02-15 Thread Dave Sparks
Congratulations, Andy. I caught this post out of the corner of my eye, and
noticed my callsign DEAD LAST. I don't even remember uploading any logs to
this site. I'm not really a contester, and only participated in one on New
Year's Eve a couple of years ago. I guess I might as well upload my entire
log just for the heck of it.

It is all in what you want to do. If you only want to run digital modes on ham
radio (espically portable) and no or very few other applications, the netbook
is fine if you do not mind a small display and smaller keyboard.

It does not take too much of a cpu to run many of the ham applications.
I have a netbook Asus 1000. It works fine for what I uses it for, but I do
have a regular desktop computer to use for serious applications.
If it was the only computer I had, I would go with a regular laptop.
I do like the long battery life of this modle. Something around 6 to 9 hours
depending on usage. While I could add an external dvd or other devices, I have
not done that. I have gotten a TV/FM radio thing that cost about $ 60 to make
it a TV receiver.

This raises an issue that I have faced, that the digital modes are still so
much of a minority mode, that many days we just run in to the same hams over
and over again. It is nice to meet old friends but some "fresh meat" is
nice, every now and again.

[digitalradio] Logging

2010-02-15 Thread Pieter

Hi all.

Since the launch of the latest version of DX-BUDDY on www.dx-buddy.net the
stream on Wolfgangs website was +300% so we can say that a lot of people
where interested in this program. And because Wolfgang and I are looking
further than just DX-BUDDY we came up with the idea to make a (freeware)
logging program just for shortwave listeners. I know that on the www we can
find many logging programs but mostly it is for ham-amateurs only. And for
the SWL-logging program we need your help. We want to know from you,
shortwave listeners, what features must be in the program except from
logging frequency, call sign, station, date, time, loggers name, and remarks
and most of all we want to know if shortwave listeners need such a program.

For your ideas, suggestions and other stuff send me a e-mail:
pdeh...@vodafonevast.nl or postmas...@shortwavemonitor.com

Regards, Pieter & Wolfgang

I run MultiPSK Ver 3.13 on a VERY old IBM ThinkPad running Win98 at 166 MHz.
I'd like to get a newer, faster, better laptop. Is there any disadvantage to
using a netbook as compared to an actual laptop notebook?

Yes you have it: a "RX RS ID" and a "RX Call ID" buttons to the right of the
SdR window.

In case of reception of a RS ID by the SdR, it is also proposed to jump to
the transmission shifting the bandwidth containing the RS ID to the base
band.

The Multidem has more SdR RX/TX functionnalities that the Multipsk SdR, but
of course I use more or less the same code.
There is not RS ID decoding in Multidem as it is not the objective of this
soft.

The problem with very low level depends on the sound card. If down to 10
bits it is only noise (standard sound card), all the signals (in base band)
good or not will be mixed with the sound card noise and they will be bad.
Now if the first 16 bits are clean of noise (Multipsk SdR working on 16
bits), the signals (in base band) will be good.

The best is to have a comfortable global level, so there will be no doubt.

The 10 and 12 meter bands are open to the northeast as of
