RE: [digitalradio] Initial thoughts on SDR

Check out the head tracker at http://johnnylee.net/projects/wii/

Cheap hardware that we could all put together, now the software interface to
do what you're looking to do is the next part.

I would suggest an intuitive interface; stereo headphones with tracking so
turning one's head tunes the receiver, frequencies below the tuned point
sent to the left earphone, frequencies above, to the right. Now just turn
your head until something interesting is audible "straight ahead", press a
switch or click on an icon and Bob's your uncle! (sneaking in English)

This could be pretty easy with some of the virtual reality gaming systems
but we might not need the video outputs.

Or maybe we would Imagine spotting the multiplier you need on the heads up
display, turning your head until it's heard straight in front, and ZAPPING
it with the mouse. Nerd Preferred!

RE: [digitalradio] Re: Need your help picking HF radio.

2009-12-25 Thread Rod Lane
I'm having more fun on HF than I've ever had before since I bought the
Flex-3000 radio. I don't think I can go back to a conventional HF rig.
With this much control and display, it's like looking at the HF spectrum out
a picture window instead of through a keyhole.
http://www.flex-radio.com/Products.aspx?topic=F3k_features

I've done PSK, and DRM easily with the 3000. It's not as cheap as some of
the other rigs, but LOTS of bang for the buck. You might even think to use
the 3000 as your main rig and use the conventional rig for PSK.

The TS2000 has lots of bang for the buck, HF, 2M, 6M, 70 cm, IF DSP. The
TS480 has been labeled by some here as the "best" radio for digital modes.
Icom746 Pro has good reviews. Icom 7000 also.

Features, I am no expert in this area, but ability to control or at least
turn off/on the AGC is important for digital modes. This helps reduce the
problems associated with strong nearby signals using digital modes. Ability
to easily dial in narrow filters while in USB (not just CW) also helps with
digital mode QRM.

I've just learned that Pete Radding, W2GJ, and three other hams were killed
when Pete's small plane crashed on take-off from an airport in SC. Pete and
I spent a half-hour or so at this past September's Traffic Handlers' Picnic
chatting about his many trips to Barbados (C6) to operate in the DX
contests. This was such a flight, for the CQ WW Phone DX Contest this
weekend. Also reported killed were K3IXD, K4QO, and W3PP.

Also at the September picnic was Pip, WB4FDT, who often operated from W3PP's
station in DX contests.

It is a very small world, suddenly made smaller and sadder by this morning's
terrible event.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that K4QO and "others" dies in a plane crash
today. Not sure who the "others" were/are.

22/10/2009: Once again Pete/W2GJ, Ed/K3IXD, Dallas/W3PP, and Randy/K4QO will
operate in the Multi-Operator, Two Transmitters (M/2) Class in the CQWW SSB
contest (24-25 October) as C6APR from the Crooked Island Lodge (WW Loc.
FL22TT), Crooked Island (NA-133), The Bahamas. The team will be active from
22-26 October. Before and after the contest look for C6AQO on HF CW and SSB,
and C6AXD on HF RTTY. Both C6AQO and C6AXD will be on 160m through 10m
including the WARC bands. All the QSOs are good for the Bird Rock lighthouse
(ARLHS BAH-005) under the 'visual sight' rule. All QSLs via K3IXD, direct or
bureau. [K3IXD]

By BRUCE SMITH (AP) - 6 hours ago

JEDBURG, S.C. - Authorities say four people were killed when a small plane
crashed and burst into flames shortly after departure near the South
Carolina coast.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said agents at
the scene confirmed that four people died in the fiery crash. The
twin-engine Piper PA-23 crashed shortly after departure around 6:45 a.m.
Wednesday near the Summerville airport in a rural area northwest of Jedburg.

Dorchester County Administrator Jason Ward says the plane was fully engulfed
in flames when firefighters arrived. The flight plan indicated the aircraft
was headed to Florida.

Jedburg is around 30 miles northwest of Charleston.
