[digitalradio] Re: packet not listening fast enough?

2010-02-04 Thread sszretter
Thats what I was thinking... I did manage to fix the issue though by swapping
radios - I am using my mobile Kenwood 2550A instead of the HT and it works fine
now. At some point I will probably try to track down the issue with using the
HT using both of your advice, thank you!

[digitalradio] packet not listening fast enough?

2010-02-02 Thread sszretter
Can someone tell me if this makes sense --

I had a RS 2m HT with a KPC-3 and was able to reasonably connect to 3 different
stations.

I switched out the radio and put in a Kenwood TR 2600 HT.

It is lower power (2.5 vs. 5 watts), but those stations still seem to be able
to hear me, and I can still connect to two of them without issue.

However, the third one when I connect to it sends me a message back that I am
connected to it, but my KPC-3 does not recognize the connection and eventually
times out retries.

Listening to it, the difference that I hear is that station seems to respond
very quickly. I am wondering if something is getting cut off, or I need to
adjust something int he KPC-3 to tell it to start listening sooner or stop
transmitting as long...?

Any ideas?

[digitalradio] squelch issue

2010-02-02 Thread SSzretter
I know this is not digital specific, but I am hoping someone can point me in
the right direction - I have a Kenwood TR-2550A mobile radio I purchased
used that I am using for APRS. It worked well at first, but I think it now
has an issue with the squelch.

It transmits fine and receives fine if I test with my 5w portable HT.
However it is not picking up weaker, further away transmissions that I can
hear on the HT.

The HT is using a rubber duck antenna, the Kenwood has an apprx 3' omni in
the attic.

The squelch knob did not seem to work when I received the radio, but I was
receiving stations, so I didn't care.

What do you think I should look at, or can you point me at some places more
appropriate to ask this question?
Thanks!

[digitalradio] xastir or similar service/daemon 'back end' software?

2010-02-01 Thread sszretter
Is it possible to run xastir (or some other similar aprs software service) on a
machine as a service/daemon, and use a different machine to connect to it to
view aprs maps?

I have an old very slow machine that should be good enough to do the
communications and data manipulation, but it is way too slow to view the maps
once they are loaded in. (300mhz, 256mb ram)

Thanks!

[digitalradio] Re: source of 8 pin female radio connectors?

I found a good source, my local Radio Shack!
About $1 higher than ordering online, but no shipping costs...

I thought of digikey or mouser, but what is the generic electronic part name
for it?

[digitalradio] source of 8 pin female radio connectors?

2010-01-26 Thread sszretter
I have a aea pk-88 tnc and a kenwood radio, they both have the same 8 pin male
connector, so I need to buy some female 8 pin connectors and wire it up. Know
of any good cheap sources (online) or in MA?
