James, Wondering if anyone has done any digital voice other than with the AOR unit? James W8ISS I have several digital voice clips that you can listen to on my website. The voice quality is quite good with FDMDV and WinDRM (MELP CODEC). Most were recorded on 20 meters while we participated in DV nets hosted by my good friend Mel, K0PFX. We even did some experimenting with software EQ while running FDMDV. Wondering if anyone has done any digital voice other than with the AOR unit? What I am looking for specifically is software done (if possible) and then manufactured units or kits. Would like to give it a try on VHF then move to HF if there is any activity. James W8ISS

Have you ever tried FDMDV? Very narrow (~1200 Hz), all-software digital voice protocol that sounds pretty good and, due to the low bandwidth, works well with low power. Look for activity around 14.236 USB. As far as VHF goes, D-STAR is getting pretty popular worldwide. James, many of us did a lot with digital voice a couple of years ago (search the archives of this group for LOTS of info. It worked quite well IF there was a good signal to noise ratio. It began to decline in interest when the main codec used was declared to be in violation of a commercial copyright and the software developers dutifully switched to a different codec. The newer codec did not produce the same quality of digital voice. Al of this was software, not hardware, based...using PC soundcards.
