A timely post with Christmas soon upon those that celebrate this gift-giving
holiday. I was thinking about a Netbook for my teenage daughter but with a
full featured laptop only $50 more, I opted for the laptop. For portable
digital mode ham operations though,a netbook might be quite useful.

Was reading up on the netbooks recentlyi, and seems like their speed and
capability are pretty near what normal computers were, just a short few 5-6
years ago , or even less, except for the fact they have no cd/dvd built in.
Also, of course, no db9 connectors, etc. They do have, though, jacks for an
outboard keyboard, mouse, monitor, and frankly if I had a notebook, I would be
using those here in the house anyway. But, also the OS can be an iffy
situation. I noticed, of the three on stock at the local Walmart, one of them
had XP in it (about a month ago- now maybe W7?). It was only about 50 dollars
less than the cheapest laptop, and given the fact it had no CD reader/writer,
and the laptop did, it would simply make no sense to purchase it, over the
laptop. Both said the battery hour supply was within about 20 minutes of each
other, land that seems to be a great distinction in prices between the whole
display sitting there, price wise.

Andy,

I purchased a Lenovo netbook in Jan of 2009, added 2G of memory for $30 and it
has been great! The netbook is used only for the ham station. I have very
little space for a laptop or monitor so the netbook works great. I use WIFI for
web access and a wireless mouse and keyboard. My whole ham station is in my den
in a computer armoire. With the doorsclosed on the armoire you can not tell it
is ham station. It has worked out great but is very cramped.

I have a Asus netbook and it will run the most common digital modes of psk31
and rtty without any problems.  I would not recommend the netbook to take the
place of a 'real' computer.  They are handy to carry with you.  There is a lot
of stuff in a small package, but to get the battery life the speed is not too
fast.  However, they are plenty fast for small applications if only running one
program at a time.  I have ran Skype  without any problems.  I also have an
external TV tuner that works well with it.   I like the fact the battery life
is very long compaired to the normal laptop.  About 6 hours or more depending
on the usage.  Also it has everything built in except for a cd/dvd drive.  They
can be bought for about $ 50.  I don't have one as I have not found a need for
one yet.  If I want to load some softwear  I put the disc in the desktop and
use the wireless router to install the softwear.

The screen is small and it takes good eyes.  Also in the 1024x768 mode (think
that is the one) I only get about 2/3 of a page on the screen and have to
scrool down to see the rest of the page.

Most digital modes do not take that much of a computer, I ran psk31 on an old
486 computer not too long afer psk 31 came out.
Ran rtty on less of a machine than that.

As with anything, you have to know what it will do and what it will not do .

An interesting article about portable puters. I didn't know this stuff. It is
worth knowing so you don't buy the wrong item are dissatisfied /surprised
when you get it home find out it doesn't do or have what you expected

Differences between netbooks notebook/laptob computers

Many people are confused by this and Generally, laptops and netbooks look
similar. And manufacturers often try to blur the differences.
But there are significant differences. For instance, netbooks are less
expensive than most laptops. Prices start around $280. And they weigh only a
couple of pounds. They typically feature 10-inch screens. Most laptops have
13-inch screens or larger. The size difference is obvious if you compare them
in a store. But, if you're shopping online, size can be difficult to determine.
Netbooks are less powerful than laptops. Most netbooks use Intel's Atom
processor. This is a low-power, single-core chip. It can't compete with
powerful processors like the Core 2 Duo. Likewise, netbooks' graphics aren't as
strong. Nor do netbooks feature built-in optical drives. However, some
retailers bundle external drives with netbooks.
A netbook is fine for basic tasks like e-mail and surfing. You can also do word
processing and use spreadsheets. But netbooks aren't recommended for gaming or
video editing. Your son also will want a laptop if he does much photo editing.
Netbooks dont have a highend sound card either and that can mean poorer copy on
soundcard digital modes such as psk, rtty, olivia, etc, for this kind of stuff and
general computer work  i would recomend a medium to highend notebook as i use
here at kb9ygd which will cost you much more but you will get much more and be
satisfied in the long run.
