Hams use the MIL STD 188-141 ALE, and that is the one that is found
embedded in the Micom, Harris, Icom, Codan, Vertex, etc.

I know NOTHING!!! G contact tech support for ICOM in Washington state and
ask them about ALE and what is out there. That tech is the person who told
me what I have posted. in his opinion, the best ALE radio out is the Codan.
Why are the Aussies so far ahead of us on these rigs???
Anyway, he is the person who told me that there is a standard being developed
for HAM ALE usage. My personal interest is MARS. If I had a spare $5kUS, I
would likely buy the Codan or the Harris. but to me, that is simply
disgraceful or... bordering on obssessive behaviour to spend that much on such
a radio.
Still, just think of how much power is built into the radio along with
scanning, etc and in a package which is designed to be carried around in
Trish's command carG.

[digitalradio] Icom IC-F7000 transceiver with ALE and SELCALL

2006-08-21 Thread expeditionradio
Hi Chas,

The Icom IC-F7000 with built-in ALE has been on the market
for several years, but it has not been released yet by ICOM in USA.
It costs about the same as a medium-priced Icom HF SSB rig.

I've been running my IC-F7000 since last year, on amateur ALE and
SELCALL. I can tell you it indeed does work... with 125W output on
the HF bands. It scans ALE and SELCALL, simultaneously! I have used it
to link with other hams on ALE who are using Micom, Harris, and
amateur rigs running PCALE.

There is a yahoo group for IC-F7000 called ICF7000.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/icf7000/

By the way, Chas, please tell me more about Kenwood's ALE standards,
because I was not yet aware that Kenwood had an ALE radio.

Hams use the MIL STD 188-141 ALE, and that is the one that is found
embedded in the Micom, Harris, Icom, Codan, Vertex, etc.

Interesting, the tech at ICOM/Washington state, told me last week
that this
radio was not even supposed to be in this country because it is not
fully
compatible with the standards being set by Kenwood, Harris, Micom,
etc, etc.

But, they are working on it. Icom just does not have anything
usable to talk
with Codan and Harris, and Micom and so on. When they do, they
will bring
out a new series but it will not be the F7000. the F7000 is
apparently just a
 test bed.
