[digitalradio] K3UK gone over to the dark side...

2010-06-25 Thread Andy obrien
OK, I did it. No, I have not become a Pactor III BBS but I have set
up a 24/7 WINMOR Winlink 2000 server station with busy detect
active at the server end preventing my response to a connect request
if the frequency is busy.. This station will use 500 Hz Winmor. The
first couple of stations connecting to the server (K3UK-5) all passed
traffic to the CMS server OK.I need to study frequencies more and
make sure that I eventually choose frequencies that make sense .
During the next few days I will test on

 0500 to 1400 on USB 3584.5 (dial 3583).
1400-1600 USB 7084.8 (dial 7083.3)
1600-0100 USB 28125 dial
2100-0500 USB 7084.8 (dial 7083.3)

10M is NOT a mistake. There are no servers on 10M and I hope to test
this out some more. I may also try 6M.

To use the server, you need RMS express software, which is free. You
also need a soundcard (and radio!)

I've tried PSKmail , ALE400, and 300 baud packet Pbbs over the past
few months. PSKMAIL is VERY good but the Linux requirement for the
server operations was more than i was willing to mess around with.
So, I will give the WINMOR winlink server a try for the next 90 days
and then evaluate how utilized it is. This will also give me a great
opportunity to fully study the busy detect features that appear to
work quite well at the moment.

[digitalradio] K3UK Sked Page Annual Fund Drive

2010-05-09 Thread Andy obrien
The K3UK Sked pages at http://www.obriensweb.com/sked have had another
very successful year. The SKCC and LOTW pages in particular have been
very popular with occasions where we have had 100 hams simultaneously
connected. We have also had favourable mention in QST and other ham
publications.

June is the time of year where I pay the annual bill.

The site has very heavy usage . The sked pages generate an average of
20 gigs of posts per month. In April for example Total Hits were
2,047,126, Hits per Day averaged 68237 with a maximum of 118208.

To maintain this service I pay for a higher than standard server with
unlimited data use . In the past, many users have be generous enough
to make a small donation towards the annual costs. Please consider
making a donation to help the 2010-2011 costs. You can donate via
paypal (see http://www.obriensweb.com/donate.html ) or via check to
the call book address. Donations of course are completely voluntary
and not required to use the service.

You can use the back up site at

Jose gave all Amateurs a gift in my view. My copy was free es latest beta

in my book. Giving the hobby a bit of needed hope, shot-in-the-arm for our
struggling brotherly existence. Personally, I am
envious of José's hard earned telecommunications engineering knowledge,
programming skills the end results of his effort.
Bravo Jose, well done.

[their isn't much room on the bands anyway.] sadly true. My employees, the FCC,
are not going to grant Amateurs additional

Amateurs' take a FCC back seat, we are not
wealthy corrupt uncaring greedy corporate giants dolling out political favors
in the form of greenbacks. My FCC eagerly
sleeps with the Amateurs enemy. I believe the FCC see Amateurs as something
similar as annoying gum on the bottom of their
wingtip shoes on a hot summer day.

The FCC could care less whether Amateurs continue to hang around or suddenly
disappear tomorrow. The instant we disappear, I
predict the FCC displaying glowing devilish dollar sign eyes feverishly
scrambling , immediately begin to sell off our hard
earned, well deserved, hard earned miniscule es now quite spectrum sliver. The
FCC views Amateurs as a road block to multi
millions (if not multi billions) to their coffer.

Amateurs can rightfully claim they paid dues in full a long time back, the
proverbial check was in the mail a century ago,
many of Amateurs have more than paid their dues to get to your current Amateur
status, could rightfully demand some change
($) back. If it's not to much to expect, perhaps some additional usable,
practical spectrum.

1 and/or 2 things need to happen in our favor, (safe to say, longtime overdue)
my voice the ARRL (a dues paying member es I
donate to the ARRL spectrum fund) needs to locate their cajones es actively,
aggressively acquire rightfully owed privileges,
(many frequencies collecting dust as world communications move towards reliable
satellite communications) those lonely
neglected spectrum spots not being actively utilized es wasted. Aggressively
hounding the International Telecommunication
Union and/or International Amateur Radio Union if required.

Frankly, the allocated channelized 60 meters is a slap in the face, amounts to
nothing more then table scraps or leftovers. I
believe Norway/Bangladesh are not rock bound es times have changed. The second
option for favorable, revolution, nothing else
will force changes to our genuine legitimate Amateur desires. I guess there is
a third consideration, we sit on our
proverbial asses *%$ing away whining our lives away, hopeful for a vy unlikely
GOD like miracle while holding out both hands
to see which fills first.

But right now (1210 UTC) there are at least 3 strong data sigs on 14112.
One of them has just CWIDed C5??L I think (my CW is too rusty to catch

[digitalradio] K3UK WAS LOTW interattivo

2009-05-29 Thread Andrew O'Brien
  K3UK WAS LOTW interattivo

L'idea non è affatto male. Tutto gira attorno al WAS, il Worked All States,
Ad
esempio quello che vedo adesso sono:

http://www.obriensweb.com/sked/

06/21 03:53 WB7DE/L I need SD and WY on 20m

06/21 02:12 K4XZ 14.202 QRM on 14.199 thank

06/20 21:55 D44BS Need AL, DE, NV, ND and WY on RTTY

Con questo metodo si può fissare uno sked o vedere chi c'è in linea e magari
tentare un QSO. Bella pensata. E farne uno per le contee che sono un'agonia da
completare

[digitalradio] K3UK Sked Pages: Annual Fund Drive

2009-05-04 Thread Andy obrien
Last year I placed a donate via Paypal icon on the K3UK Sked Pages
for the month of May. This was because my annual bill from the
Internet Service Provider is due in June. Many people contributed
towards the annual costs, and I hope some of you will consider doing
so this year. Use of the pages will always be free, but if you want
to make a small donation please click on the Paypal donate icon when I
place it there in the next day or so.

The K3UK Sked Pages take advantage of my ISP's mySQL datbase options
and ability to place PHP scripts on their server. The bandwidth for
the site is unlimited which facilitates the occasions where we have
50-70 hams simultaneously connected, each refreshing a web page every
60 seconds . The unlimited bandwidth option requires a higher fee
than normal ISP service. The daily average is 100,000 hits per day,
79,932 files per day, and 1040 visits per day. In the past 12 months
3,591,766,286 KBytes of information has been transferred !

My annual bill is around $300. Not a large fee, if users of the
service consider a small donation, I should be able to recoup my
expenses. Last year the bulk of the donations came from users of the
SKCC pages, some Logger32 users also donated since I host Logger32's
download service . I have informed Logger32 that I will not be
providing space for their software effective 6/09 since I wanted to
dedicate the storage space to sked page databases. There are now many
new users via the LOTW sked page, hopefully some of those new users
will consider a donation.

Thanks

Andy K3UK

Thank you for you consideration

[digitalradio] K3UK Guide to setting up D700A with Digitraveler GPS

2008-08-13 Thread Andrew O'Brien
Looks like I am going to have make my own cables again. I dug up my
old instructions on this, and thought I would post here. It is
several years old,

--
Andy K3UK
www.obriensweb.com
(QSL via N2RJ)

Kenwood TM-D700A to Digitraveler Hook-Up :(Version 2)

Here is an explanation of how to easily connect your Kenwood TM-
D700A radio to the Radio Shack Digitraveler GPS Unit (PDA version).
These GPS devices have been discontinued by Radio Shack but if in
stock they are selling for $29.97, a very cheap way to get into APRS
with GPS. They may be even cheaper on Ebay

There are several links on the Internet that explain how to connect
the Digitrveler and the TM-D700A, , the ones I read were frequently
overly complicated, or left out important information. This is the
easy, dummies guide

Kenwood TM-D700A Radio Set-Up

First, you will need to set up your Kenwood TM-D700A to allow APRS
capability. The essential items are:

Make sure TNC-APRS is indicated on your Kenwood TM-D700A display.
(If not , use your manual to learn how to enable this feature).

Make sure that Bcon is indicated on your Kenwood TM-D700A
display. (If not , use your manual to learn how to enable this
feature).

Make sure that GPS is indicated on your Kenwood TM-D700A display.
(If not , use your manual to learn how to enable this feature ).
Also, make sure your GPS settings in the Kenwood TM-D700A's sub-menu
are set at NMEA . The Kenwood manual explains how to do this.

Make Sure that 1200 (packet baud rate) is indicated on your
Kenwood TM-D700A display. (If not , use your manual to learn how
to enable this feature ). 1200 is the default baud rate for the
radio, so this should already be set.

Connecting the Kenwood TM-D700A to the Digitraveler GPS Device.

Cut the PDA connector off one of the cables supplied with the
Digitraveler (the PDA version of the Digitraveler comes with THREE
connector cables, so you can make three cables if you want!) This
will leave you with a cable that has a RJ-45 connector at one end,
and three bare wires at the other end. You will have a Red wire, a
Black wire, and a Brown wire.

Next, locate the cable that is supplied with the Kenwood TM-D700A.
This is a long thin cable with a sub-miniature plug on one end ,
and three bare wires on the other end. The Kenwood supplied cable
has wires that are white, red (may look orange to some eyes), and
bare wire .

I tried temporary connections of the above three wires to the GPS
wires and twisted them together. This was a major mistake since the
wires of the Kenwood radio are so thin and contain non-conducting
fibers within the copper strands. The result was that I was not
making a good electrical connection between the Kenwood and
Digitraveler cables.

So, to avoid the above ... first tin thoroughly, the Red, White,
and ground wires on the Kenwood cable. Double check for good
continuity by taking a multi-meter and connecting the probes to the
bare ends of the Kenwood wires. Check a few places along the length
of the bare wires that you stripped back.

Now, connect the supplied Kenwood TM-D700A cable to the
Digitraveler cable. as follows:

Red wire on the Kenwood to the Brown wire of the Digitraveler
White wire on the Kenwood to the Red wire of the Digitraveler
Bare ground wire on Kenwood cable to the Black wire of the
Digitraveler.

That's it! At least as far as the connection goes.

Getting power to the Digitraveler:

The next step is getting power to the Digitraveler. You can simply
insert 3 AAA batteries in the Digitraveler or an alternative 6 volt
DC supply. Since I use mine in the car, I purchased a cigarette
lighter device that drops the car's 12 volts down to 6 volts. I got
mine from Radio Shack , it included a free coaxial power connector.
I selected the Type B connector which fits the Digitraveler.

You should take the cable you made up, plug in the RJ-45 connector
in to the Digitraveler and the sub-miniature plug in to the back of
you Kenwood TM-D700A in the jack marked GPS.

With your radio on and power connected to the Digitraveler, you
should see the Green LED on your Digitraveler light up. If it does
not, re-check the connections you made on the cable and double check
you have power supplied to the Digitraveler. If the green light is
on, you're all set. The Digitraveler will need a few minutes
to lock-on to the GPS satellites. My experience has been that it
can take 2-3 minutes on the first occasion, sometimes longer if it
is a very cloudy day. Make sure your Digitraveler is in a position
that allows it to easily see the GPS satellites. It generally does
not work inside your home or office. If outside make sure that
there are no trees above your vehicle.

Within a couple of minutes, you should notice the GPS display on
your Kenwood TM-D700A begin to flash. If it flashes, Eureka !
That's it.

You can press the Function button on your Kenwood, hold it down long
enough (two beeps) to see the APRS menu. Select position and your
Kenwood will

[digitalradio] K3UK Interactive : Changes

2007-07-29 Thread Andrew O'Brien
I have made a few changes to the K3UK Interactive spotting pages.

The amount of ALE related traffic necessitated the creation of a
dedicated ALE page. This ALE page is located at
http://www.obriensweb.com/ale/ale.php . It may eventually move to
another web site altogether, but for now it is here. This ALE traffic
on my site has been full of fascinating ALE experimentation, check it
out.

The general digital mode interactive/spotting page remains at
http://www.obriensweb.com/drsked/drsked.php . Use this for
experimenting and arranging skeds for any digital modes , except JT65A
and ALE which have their own pages.

Other K3UK Interactive Pages are:

SKCC Helper: http://www.obriensweb.com/skccsked/skccsked.php (CW related)

Worked All States : http://www.obriensweb.com/was/was.php

US Islands : http://www.obriensweb.com/usi/usi.php

The ALE and General pages have links to all, I will pretty up the
HTML table colors when I get a chance.

Re: [digitalradio] K3UK On Understanding JT65A for HF.

2007-04-05 Thread Jose A. Amador

Walt DuBose wrote:

As far as I can tell, there is a very large use of FEC which of
course cuts down on the amount of user data throughput.
Additionally, with 65 tones, I believe that the signal is wider than
 500 Hz. Hi Hi.

Yep!...it was meant for VHF and up...

 1. In earlier versions the vertically-scrolling JT65 waterfall
always displayed the frequency range 500-2500 Hz. The range has now
been optionally expanded and made more flexible. By toggling a
button labeled BW at the top of the SpecJT window you can change
the displayed bandwidth to 4 kHz. In addition, you can offset the
displayed region in 100 Hz steps by using buttons labeled and
, and you can return the range to its default alignment with a
 button labeled |.

This new feature provides two significant advantages. If your
receiver provides a bandwidth greater than 2 kHz in USB mode, you can
now display up to 4 kHz instantaneously (and with offsets, a total
range of 5 kHz). The Kenwood TS-2000, for example, provides a 5 kHz
bandwidth. The expanded range will make it easier to find other
stations to work -- e.g. in contests, and at 1296 MHz where Doppler
shifts are relatively large. In addition, extending the displayed
spectrum to frequencies below 500 Hz is useful if you are using WSJT
as a display tool when operating on CW.

Also, some of the top guns on EME are using WSJT along with Software
Defined Radios, on which, bandwidth is easier to adjust while operating.

Does anyone know the actual transmit bandwidth of J65A? It would
appear to be about 2 KHz wide.

A snapshot of the waterfall might be used to document it, at least, roughly.

The bottom line is that Joe Taylor, K1JT, has provided some
interesting code based I suppose in part on KA9Q's work, and perhaps
that of Dr. Clark, which combined with the corporate knowledge of
this group might produce a very robust mode with the possibility of
much higher throughput. However, I believe that a new mode based on
this or similar work will be considerably wider than 500 kHz
 bandwidth.

Would say 500 Hz...which I think is quite consistent with Shannon's
statements

earlier today, is an MFSK type of signal. The software was designed
for the very critical aspects of EME and meteor scatter applications.
An essential element of EME and Meteor work is weak signal detection
and careful timing of who is transmitting and who is receiving.
Another aspect is that a series of brief messages are transmitted in a
designated order, these essentially meet the accepted requirements for
a valid contact. These is usually the exchange of call sign, grid
square, and some confirmation of received signals. This would be the
equivalent of perhaps a PSK31 contact where the accepted protocol was
agreed that a valid QSO needed to include : Call sign, QTH, RST, and
acknowledgement that the other station received the sent information.

Somebody suddenly started using JT65A on HF about 2 weeks ago, and us
JT65A ignorant hams simply detected a unknown mode on 20M. My only
involvement was to obtain the software when someone suggested it might
be JT65A and I confirmed the mystery signals were indeed JT65A. After
I mentioned it here and had a QSO, a dozen or so hams jumped on
the mode , spread the word to others, and the HF applications appear
to have excited many hams. I have been amazed by the emails received
today from different parts of the world all indicated their first HF
 JT65A QSO or reception.

Early today, someone asked me just what can be done with this mode, is
it a legitimate communication application. Again, I'm no expert, but
I'll answer that with a big Y E S .You can do whatever you like with
it , you could in fact have keyboard chats if you wanted to. The
standard messages can be changed and you could type in how's the
weather at your QTH, if you wanted to. It was not designed for this
, but you can do it. Remember, it was not designed for HF work at
all, so already someone has broken the mold . You can do likewise and
use it in anyway you see fit (within your Government's regulations).

It is no different than Olivia, Hell, ALE, or MT63, in that it just
another mode. The user decides how it is best used. The one major
difference is that the software's default setting is that your typical
transmission lasts about 48 seconds and then you pause for 72 seconds
(12 seconds to the top of the minute and then 60 seconds allocated to
 the responding station).

From a practical perspective, this mode appears to have uses that lean
toward the testing of propagation paths since the software always
gives you the SNR of a received station. The software records data
every minute, thus you can leave the software in monitor mode while
away from the shack and get a sense of the propagation upon your
return by looking at what was received, what the SNR was, and where
 the stations received were located.

If you are a ham like me, you might like the challenge of making a
contact but not really get in to the whole conversation thing. JT65A
suits people like this by keeping to a minimum exchange and moving
on. However, I will reiterate, you can use the mode to rag chew...
but it would be slow . It could be more efficient than other faster
modes though, since the throughput under poor conditions may be more
 reliable than most other modes.

So, play with it. Monitor . Invent new useful ways to use it. It
has been really great to see over 10 DXCC entities on HF JT65A in the
week since we have been pushing it. I wonder who will be the first
 to get DXCC JT65A HF.?

As many may know, JT65 was originally written by K1JT(?).
A paper on JT65 can be seen at http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/JT65.pdf and
http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/WSJT_User_600.pdf

As far as I can tell, there is a very large use of FEC which of course cuts
down
on the amount of user data throughput. Additionally, with 65 tones, I believe
that the signal is wider than 500 Hz. Hi Hi.

JT65A is generally used on 50 MHz. Thus JT65A on 6M is more like HF
propagation...ot at least that on 14MHz and above.

It would be wonderful if we could get K1JT to comment on the list for us.

For those who are interested in reasons for wider bandwidths on HF, here is
what
K1JT says, reg. URL http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/UpdateHistory.txt
