To clarify my earlier comment on web mail - what I was suggesting was
to set up a local (to each node) webmail machine that would then send
SMTP over packet. The interface between the local ham's equipment and
the LAN clients would be a web browser. At no time would the http be
going over the air. (Except maybe a local WiFi link).

Also, it might be easier to set up the web mail server to run text
only and to block large attachments right up front. While I'm sure
it's still possible to deal with problems the other way, you'd be
stuck having to reject and send back a message that the user had
already clicked send.

Andy your'e not the only one concerned about this, For a while now I've
been trialling most of the systems that have potential for putting data
to and from the field. RFSM has been the best experience for cold start
users and it can send and retrieve files to the host station PC.

I get the impression that the best option is to purchase eeePC type
devices and preload the appropriate programs ready to hand out to
operators rather than rely on them trying to setup their own gear.
Cheaper than buying Pactor modems, anyway.

 I know it
is not really difficult to set up things like Outlook Express but am I
the only one that thinks having to set up mail servers represents a
step that will confuse the casual operator that suddenly finds
themselves having to figure out how to send an emergency message?

PSKmail

has quite a few features

including Evolution mail client support, a chat mode and APRS inter-operability.
It is also free under the GPL.nbsp; It does not require an Internet connection
to function.
