You can use Ubuntu from the install CD. It will let you run that way for
testing. There is no time limit for testing and most of the supplied apps,
drivers, and networking work fime from the CD. I don't' know if you can use
a Thumbdrive to boot Ubuntu from on your laptop (some don't) so just load
the ISO image to your thumbdrive and try it.

Hi Simon and thanks to all for the replys from everyone else.

Simon I already have 3 other computers running XP(and my main ham
computer is using HRD a Great Program), and hear all the good things
about Linux/Ubuntu, so I thought I would try a different one on my
laptop.

As far as XP license key, I still have the recovery disk for the
laptop.

Now as anyone installed Ubuntu or Linux on a flash drive, and used
it that way on another system. I have a 1gig flash drive and thought
if I could install it there, I could pop it in/out when I wanted to
and still leave XP on the machine. Is it possible?

Kurt,

Puppy Linux is very easy to install on a flash drive. Just burn a CD,
pop it into the computer, reboot from the CD, then go to install in
the menu. I have done that several times. As for Ubuntu, I don't know
if it will fit on a 1 gig disk but here are the instructions. There is
no need to get rid of XP on and computer you install Linux on. If you
install it without using the whole hard drive, you will be asked which
system you would like to use when you boot up.

Save the licence keys on paper, then you have them in case to decide that XP
is the best thing out there :-)

Sorry I can't help with Linux apps - tend you use Windows myself.
