Re: [IxDA Discuss] What tools do you use for prototyping?

2007-12-10 Thread Chauncey Wilson
Just an FYI:

Staples (and other large office supply stores) have magnetic sheets in
the specialized printer paper section that you can put through an
inkjet (BUT NOT A LASER) printer. You can print your own set of
widgets pretty easily. Most whiteboards are now magnetic so you can
lay out your designs on a white board. You can purchase small
whiteboards that are magnetic and small enough to carry around. The
small whiteboards costs between $10 and $80. Tom Tullis used this
approach at Fidelity (I believe he called it FIDO) where he asked
users to build a web pages given a set of magnetic components.

Good point. If the scope for this is big, we either start small, or
pick another project with a smaller scope altogether. I would think
the latter would be better - it's always good to see something launch,
and a quick win might generate more interest which in turn allows us
to tackle bigger things.

Wow - I wonder if I could just resell these to my clients and retire early.
Apparently, one of the things I do best can be reduced to a $200 kit, so
maybe I should stop designing and get more sleep.

(Joking, obviously.)

They have something called "Magnetic Web Widgets"

Magnetic Web Widgets provides you with a tool box containing all the
common interface nick-nacks -- from textboxes to buttons and checkboxes.
Just stick them on your whiteboard and start designing.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Bad Changes In The New Gmail Version

2007-12-10 Thread Kivi Shapiro
This makes more sense if you consider that in GMail, "Inbox"
is just a label.

Those new buttons have two quite different actions. By
clicking on the label, you view all conversations with that
label. This was also true in the old interface, except it
had a hyperlink instead of a button. And clicking on the
"X" removes the label from this particular conversation.
I'm not sure there's room on one button for two such
different actions.

Anyway, removing the "Inbox" label is also what the message
about archiving refers to. Other email clients use the word
to refer to a different action, so yes, that's confusing
too.

There is an Archive button in the UI, with bolded text to
boot. It's exactly where you'd expect to find a Delete
button. This was one of the most controversial features of
GMail at the start, that they made it hard to truly delete
messages.

The change in paradigm from folders to labels, especially
"Inbox", does seem to take some getting used to, on the
developers' part as well as the users. I like the new
paradigm a lot, though, and will be excited once they've
ironed out all the wrinkles.

I've also noticed a new "Inbox" button in the email header
with an "X" icon.
Visually it appears to be a single button, but is actually
two.

"Inbox" returns me to the list of emails in my inbox, while
the X "removes
the inbox label". Once the "inbox label" has been removed
the email vanishes
from my inbox. A dialog informs me that it has been
"archived", but there is
no reference anywhere in the UI to an archive.

It's unfortunate. I've always liked the Gmail interface.

I was thinking about something like Google map mashup with zoom to
aggregated/detailed view for global, local issues. The framework for one
issue (opinion heat-map for global warming for instance) would be replicated
on different zoom scales. I am not certain about the scope. Someone on this
list has designed for Google mashups, perhaps she or he could chime in.

Initially we would need personas, a workflow, and a set of conceptual
wireframes stored in Google docs/ Flikr accounts. That should be doable by
February. The personas, workflow, wireframes (or beyond) could be discussed
at the conference. That, I think, would be an interesting discussion.

I'm also from Lisbon, and I know Bruno.

The Design associative scene in Portugal it's very recent and don't
have a clear structure.

Within this context the APPU association it's a good initiative but
due to the absence of associative basis in terms of a more broad
design association culture, survives with a very paused heart beat,
and unfortunately at a closed circuit.

At some time ago I have decided to organise a series of meetings
around the Interaction design concepts, and there are some interest,
we already meet once, and there's some expectative about the follow
ups feed into a mailing list of 35 professionals at this moment.

Me and other people that already have some curiosity around the
interaction design issues in Lisbon and the developments will welcome
Bruno for moving more meetings and to clarify the IxDA face to face
Lisbon structure.

All the best.

I think interaction08 is really going to be amazing. I'm not just
saying that b/c I've put in 100's of hours into its creation (See
Dan's recent interview on Boxes & Arrows for more:
http://www.boxesandarrows.com/view/interactions-08-in

I'm saying it because I look at the content, format, setting, and
people and I can't really imagine a better conference.

For people in NYC, I'm putting my money where my mouth is on this
one as well. Register at tomorrow night's holiday part
(http://ixda.org/discuss.php?post=23021) and I buy you a drink.

I explain why I feel so strongly in my blog:
http://synapticburn.com/more.php?id=273_0_1_0_C

There are lots of other options out there. I think the corporate
conferences though right now tend to be better than the rest of the
organizational conferences. UIE puts on a heck of a show and I have
only hears amazing things about Adaptive Path's stuff and good
things about NN/G's stuff.

If I had to go the organizational route, IA Summit for webbies is
great. And I mean, It's Miami this year Not Florence, but
definitely better than most other places.

Further afield and more HCI is DIS, and then there are the many many
other sigchi sponsored conferences.

Yes, UPA is missing from my list. Never been, never heard great
things about it except from those who belong to that community
already. Community is a great reason to go to a conference, BTW.

Instead of picking one issue, why not design a generic framework for solving
social issues across borders, groups, interests - Wikipolitics. Instead of
voting once in two or four years (or not being able to vote)
create "streaming civil society". The framework should allow to participate

framework in mind.
Or perhaps the existing social networking sites could be used?

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Bad Changes In The New GMail Version

2007-12-10 Thread Matthew Nish-Lapidus
in response to the original comments about the new address
book/contacts in gmail... i actually like it. yes, there is more
going on and there are a lot of different content panes, but it now
acts like all other desktop address book software and offers all of
their features, which makes me happy. it means that i can (finally)
move my full address book into gmail.

[IxDA Discuss] Fwd: Video of an internal Yahoo! talk on our pattern library

2007-12-10 Thread Christian Crumlish
-- Forwarded message --

I know some folks around these parts have asked me about how we
currently manage things in the Yahoo design pattern library. I
recently gave a brown bag at work talking about some IA reorgs to the
site and some updates to our process, and so on, and we just got it
cleared to post (most of) it to the YDN Theater series, so I thought
I'd post a link to my blog entry about it here for anyone interested:

http://xianlandia.com/te-amo/2007/12/07/as_promised_my_pattern_library_talk.html

 x'^~

p.s.: Apologies for the cross-post to people also on the IAI members list.

p.p.s: also, note that I included a shout-out to the Patterns topic at
http://gamma.ixda.org/

p.p.p.s.: also, also, the video is cross-posted at
http://yuiblog.com/blog/2007/12/07/pattern-library-brown-bag/ where
one of the commenters thought I was being snarky about Ajax (except I
loves me some Ajax!) and another thought this was not useful or
interesting for people outside Yahoo (although I'm constantly peppered
with questions about exactly this - how we manage the library and
review new patterns here), so I kind of chalk that up to the fact that
the yuiblog audience is largely developers looking for coding insights
and not so much designers.

What's strikingly missing is the notion of anything like personas: model
users chosen to resemble the ones who most need to use your site
successfully. These "People who are especially good at usability
testing" may or may not ressemble the people you want to build for.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Bad Changes In The New GMail Version

2007-12-10 Thread Lisa deBettencourt
I love gmail but have gone back to the previous version because of the
feature where when you hover over someone's name, you get this GIANT contact
card which obscures half of the content of the email below it. This is
especially painful when I'm reading the IxDA list. I click on someone's name
to collapse their post to read the next one but the contact card for the
original person covers the top of the second post (and so on). Argh.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] What tools do you use for prototyping?

2007-12-10 Thread Rik
Hi Everyone,

I'ts been a while since this topic was started but there's
something you guys might be interested in.

At Eight Media (Arnhem - NL) we are always looking for the best tools
in prototyping.
We've tried alot of different tools from software (omnigraffle) to
paper and whiteboards.

Working on a whiteboard I thought it would be cool if we had little
web-objects you could drag around, for placement and best practises.
I started looking around for these magnets but couldn't find a
manufacturer.
When asking around, I found more webdevelopers would find these
magnets a good tool to use.

So I've started printing form-objects on flexible magnets.
Last month I've launched: www.guimagnets.com to see if more people
would be interested.

I am really curious on the response and feedback on this project and
want to ask you to give your thought on it.

My goal is to:
- Create (the best) magnets with GUI-objects on them, for designers,
development-teams, geeks and their kids :)
- Supply differents sets (form-objects, web-icons, web-objects,
banner-sizes, navigation-objects etc.)
- Add a whiteboard-like material (so you can write on the magnets)
- Listen to user-feedback in order to create the best solution.

Please let me know what you think of the idea and give me some
feedback and thoughts in order to improve the quality of the product.

Cheers!

Rik Schot

Very good idea and it seems nicely implemented on catalogchoice.org.
Anything available for the rest of the world? :)

PS. Very interesting how on many web sites, the only way to find out the
geographical scope of the project is to go to the Register page and see if
there is a 'Country' drop-down. But this is for another thread :)
