[IxDA Discuss] Thoughts about Wonder Wheel?

2009-06-08 Thread Ashim
Has anyone used the Wonder Wheel feature in Google search? (On the search
results page, go to 'Show Options' Wonder Wheel)
I think its a totally different way to approach search and also a great
visualization to display related search results.
Thoughts?

Neat, hadn't seen that before. Thanks for sharing.

Sadly I found the results irrelevant to the stuff I was searching on.

Funny I just created a semantic network visualizer this weekend. I was
wondering how/when it could apply to normal search and wiki's.

The search options are only showing up for some - shame, looks interesting
that.

This reminds me of Kartoo, and old search engine that tried to use a visual
device to link search results, Just checking and it's still going:

http://www.kartoo.com/

It used to default to the visual display, but it looks like you need to use
the icon at the top to the left of 'options' to display them now.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Young Designer Seeking Advice

2009-06-08 Thread Rich Rogan
Hi Matt,

All the best with your endevour and new career! Here's my 2 cents worth:

1. What Interactive Job titles should I be applying for?

- Beginner/Intern Information Architect/ Interaction Designer/Prototyper.
I'd get anything you can to get in the door, even Business Analyst.

2. Can you recommend any studios in NY or SF that would be good to
start a career in Interaction Design.

- The job market is pretty tight in NYC, I'd imagine SF is tight as well. An
idea is to network like a madman, and see what's available. Don't be
discouraged if the pickings are slim, get something and take it from there.

3. What professional and technical skills should be built upon before
applying to a Studio that works in Interaction design (web site
design, mobile applications, user interface, and interactive media.)

- Knowing how to prototype is a great start - Basic JavaScript, DHTML,
XHTML, CSS, Cross browser/platform/device knowledge. Build anything for
browsers and devices, it always looks good if you have an i-Phone app to
show, even if it does virtually nothing but look good.
- UML/modeling is good - Activity Sequence diagrams are useful, Visual
Vocabulary has some nice tools.
- Read up on the classics, know the basics, Old school Jacob Nielson,
(lately he seems to be getting Alzheimer’s), Tufte, Jared Spool, Old school
Alan Cooper (dido to Jacob Nielson). There's got to be 50 good writers in
this field over the past 20 years. Note this field is very new, but some of
the older books are the most relevant.
Good Luck!

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Young Designer Seeking Advice

2009-06-08 Thread Vicki Splaine
Hi Matt,

As a fellow New Yorker, I would highly recommend that you look into R/GA
(www.rga.com).

They are an interactive agency located on 39th Street, between 8th and
9th (Hell's Kitchen area).

When I was in the process of transitioning from Web Design to
Interactive Design, R/GA was the first place that I worked, and it was
an amazing experience. It was like getting thrown into the deep end of
the pool and being forced to swim for my life (a very valuable lesson).

The company is very young, lots of recent graduates (so you would fit
right in with the culture), and the talent there in every discipline is
exceptional. The company is also HUGE on collaboration, so you will
learn from more people than you could ever imagine.

As Rich mentioned, the market is very tight right now. R/GA also offers
a Paid Intern program, which might be a good start. The interns
normally work for a year or 18 months with all disciplines (design,
interactive design, programming, etc), and then choose the area that
they want to move in to. It's a great way to get your feet wet, and get
your foot in the door.

Best of luck to you in your search.

Subject: [IxDA Discuss] Young Designer Seeking Advice

Hello All,

I graduated from school about a year ago and have been working as a
independent freelance web designer. I am in the process of doing some
career planning and would really appreciate all of your feedback, as I
would imagine there also many other people out there like me.

Basically, I received a design education (BFA @ The School of Visual
Arts) and have been a tinkerer in Web Design since high school (1998).
Since then, I have followed new technology, studied and learned new web
programming, worked in a small interactive/communications design studio,
and have been trying to learn all I can about careers in Interaction and
Digital Design.

My goal for September is to be starting my career at an Interactive
Studio or Agency in New York or San Francisco.

My Questions are:

1. What Interactive Job titles should I be applying for? or which are
most suitable for someone with 1-2 years of professional experience in
Basic Programming and Front End Web Development?

2. Can you recommend any studios in NY or SF that would be good to start
a career in Interaction Design.

3. What professional and technical skills should be built upon before
applying to a Studio that works in Interaction design (web site design,
mobile applications, user interface, and interactive media.)

Thanks in advance for everyone's help!

Best,

Matt

[IxDA Discuss] User Assistance (was Get started tutorials)

2009-06-08 Thread Jared Spool

On Jun 8, 2009, at 1:46 AM, Ted Kilian wrote:

I am looking for good examples of get started tutorials - by which I

the optional tooltips that guide you through an online application
for the

run
across it in websites as well. We are proposing to replace existing
video

tutorials with this approach and I am looking for examples, studies or
opinions that support or refute this decision.

My sense is that the future of help for new users is to provide
these sorts
of optional, in-context tools rather than create and maintain a
separate
training video or tutorial. Rather than leave the functional flow
to learn
how to use something, this approach walks users through the process
so that
they are using while they are learning. It also means if the
application is
changed, all that is required is the additional in-context elements,
rather
than redesigning and producing a new video, which can become
relatively

expensive and complex.

[Not answering Ted's question, but instead talking about a bigger
problem that I think IxDs are struggling with.]

So, this is the third request in as many months for a basic
introduction to user assistance.

User assistance (http://is.gd/T98M) is a branch of online design that
has been worked on by really smart people for more than 30 years,
going back to the early work by Jack Carroll (http://is.gd/T9jA, known
for his work on minimalism) and others.

There's even an excellent annual conference on the topic (http://is.gd/T9bu
 - note: I was the closing keynote this year and have presented at
many of them before).

Every question that's been asked to this list about tutorials, demos,
tooltips, and online assistance has been answered many times before by
the UA community.

I realize that IxD is a new field, but how do we integrate the
excellent work that's been done before instead of trying to reinvent
it? Sounds like a good design problem to me!

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Thoughts about Wonder Wheel?

2009-06-08 Thread Damon Dimmick
I think the wonder wheel is a great idea, but it seems out of place in
the google search page. That's probably more of a well, how the heck do
we tack THIS thing onto our traditional search problem.

But the upside is that it serves as an evolving mind map of a search and
lets you easily retrace your steps to get back to search contexts you
may have missed (and to let you choose a more narrow context for which
you might not have anticipated the best wording). To me Wonder-wheel is
to Breadcrums as Subway Map is to spooling a string behind you in order
to retrace your steps if you get lost.

It is not very useful for basic searches, but is excels for searches
about topics which I know little about. It basically provides me with
suggestive context for my searching, and is more useful than a linear
suggestive-typing feature in a search box.

As for the aesthetic, well, that's a different matter. It looks awkward
jammed in there to the right of the results filter menu.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] What is an Experience Strategy?

2009-06-08 Thread Murray Thompson
Hmm... to me, 'offering' has that duality: it could mean one
instance or the consolidation of many.

I was thinking that a circular reference to 'experience' might not
be too bad. But in the end, an experience resides within an
individual. Through an experience strategy, we can make efforts to
direct that experience towards something we'd like them to have with
our organization, but can't control every part of it, much less
provide or offer it to a person. So 'experience', at least on its
own, probably won't work either.

Why not just get rid of the parentheses: instead of '(product or
service) offering', use 'product or service'? Or maybe even
better: 'products and services', as an individual product or
service doesn't often stand alone from each other with respect to a
person's experience?

Most of us know how to enter time without typos; the only tricky part is
dealing with times between 0:00 and 12:59 that are unmarked with am/pm.
So it seems like the simplest approach would be a text-entry box with
decent validation and a hint (e.g., You can enter time like 2:30pm or

[IxDA Discuss] How to transition seamlessly to a new design from an old one?

2009-06-08 Thread Bhooshan
This is my first post, since I have been an avid reader of ALL the
advices and comments from intellectual people over here. But a small
question popped in my mind when I came across a website that was
redesigned and I was completely lost. Pardon me if this query has
been answered before.

It's an employee intranet portal which had been operational for
around a decade. The UI wasn't changed one bit in all this time.
Later the organization decided it was time to move on and did the
best they could with the UI design. For a few weeks the new
(completely overhauled) design lived beside its older cousin and the
users had the choice to peek in while still continuing in the old
mode. One day they launched the new avatar.

Now this overhauled UI has a new information architecture - complex
if one is accustomed working in the order scheme of things. Links
that were easily spotted previously had been moved around and/or
hidden under heaps of fancy labels. When I went looking for one
frequently visited section, it took me a good 10 minutes to find it!!
That's unacceptable and a waste of employee time.

My question is, how does one accomplish the difficult task of
introducing a new design? how does the organization shift seamlessly
from the older version UI to the new one without any surprises for
the user? how can the user begin using a new system starting from
where he left it earlier? Thanks in advance for all your help.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] How to transition seamlessly to a new design from anold one?

2009-06-08 Thread Sarah Kampman
We recently went through a similar redesign. Through extensive card
sorting and usability testing of new and experienced users, we found
that keeping the old (albeit non-ideal) terminology was often the best
compromise. Experienced users just got too lost if we renamed functions
and topics that they had used for years. The exception to this was
functions that even experienced users had trouble finding/understanding,
which we renamed using card sort results as a guide (then re-tested with
other users).

As we have fairly low turnover, these experienced users make up a very
high percentage of our audience, so keeping some of the status quo was a
better overall decision than a 100% overhaul. We also did substantially
more user testing of the navigation/terminology changes than a typical
design change, which corrected some mistakes early and gave us
confidence in the changes we did make.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Click Dummy

2009-06-08 Thread Jordan, Courtney
I've not heard of it either - but I have a few guesses.

Just from the semantics, I would guess that they mean a mid-fidelity
HTML prototype, where you can actually click option buttons and buttons
and checkboxes and select things from list boxes and change screens,
etc., but that there is no other code to make it do something. So, for
example, in a recommender tool, you could click a certain path of option
buttons to show/not show questions and get to a certain recommendation
screen, but you could click any other path and get to that same rec
screen, thus it is a dummy, it always behaves the same, regardless of
what one clicks.

However, I did a quick google search and it came up with this click
dummy:
http://www.medien.ifi.lmu.de/fileadmin/mimuc/mmi_ws0304/exercise/uebung4
/dummy_js/no-sound-index.html. This then is for testing purposes, it
would seem, rather than for mostly getting buy-in from the client.

Since it's obviously not a widely-used term (google had that 1 relevant
link), I would get clarification on what they really want before you
continue (especially if you're putting together a bid on the project).

Let us know what you find out!

the internet. Included in these plans is to provide a recording of the
stream that will remain accessible after the event. Details to follow.

[IxDA Discuss] Carousel reference implementations?

2009-06-08 Thread Joshua Muskovitz
Does anyone have pointers to reference implementations for carousels
which deal with acceleration physics?

On a more general note, are there reference implementations available
for standard gestures (pinch, stretch, twist, etc)? I would hate
to have to reinvent the, um, carousel...

2009-06-08 Thread Seamus Byrne

When: Wednesday, June 17th. Starting at 6:30pm until 8:00pm

issues that impact on the out of box experience and present some recent
case studies examples.

Frank Long's Bio:
• Director of Frontend.com
