[IxDA Discuss] Research: Usability of rate / review forms?

2009-06-16 Thread Ellen Beldner
Hi all --
Can anyone point me to research about the design of "Rate this service /
Rate this product" types of systems or forms?

Searching for the keywords is proving to be impossibly broad since the terms
aren't very specific, and I'm not sure how to best narrow down the search.

I'm just trying to get a baseline understanding of how well different
approaches work best; should free-text responses be at the beginning or the
end of the form vs. objective ones; etc.

Cheers,
Ellen

[IxDA Discuss] Job Posting: UE Designer / Information Architect at Silicon Valley startup

2008-04-14 Thread Ellen Beldner
Chai Labs (www.chailabs.com) is an early stage stealth consumer
Internet startup started by folks from MIT, Stanford, Google and
Cisco. We are backed by top Venture Capitalists and angel investors
(including Marc Andreessen [co-founder of Netscape] and Reid Hoffman
[co-founder of LinkedIn], and are based in downtown Mountain View, an
easy walk from Caltrain. We are solving meaningful problems and
creating products that will be used by millions of users worldwide.

We are looking for a strong UE Designer to play a key role in design
and development of our product offerings. As an integral and early
member of our team, you will contribute significantly to our culture
and growth.

You probably have a few years of experience and should be comfortable
doing conceptual and product design work, in addition to design
production within a software engineering context.

As at all startups, you should be comfortable assuming the various
roles in the UE field that are needed to deliver good UE.
 * You should be data-based and willing to do what it takes to gather
usability data, including running simple qualitative studies and
literature reviews.
 * You should be a proficient visual designer -- able to judge visual
design and make good layout and visual hierarchy decisions in your
work. Direct experience in graphic design and branding is a plus.
 * You should be technically proficient, able to communicate
effectively with webdevs and engineers about what the UI needs. You
should be able to learn enough about new technologies to understand
their UI limitations and affordances.
 * Experience in managing contractors -- especially visual design and
webdev -- is a bonus. Some of the team is geographically disbursed, so
you should not be put off by telecommuting-type working styles and
communication methods (videoconference, email, shared online
documentation, etc.)

Salary is comparable to a midlevel design position at any established
Bay Area software firm. Plus, as one of the earliest employees you'd
get a significant equity stake in the company.

If you are interested in learning more about the company and position,
please contact Gokul Rajaram ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).
