Re: [IxDA Discuss] Can anyone point me to research about hiding interface elements?

2010-02-11 Thread Francis Rowland
I don't know of a study as such, but something solid to back up your
argument could be #6 in Jakob Nielsen's Ten Usability
Heuristics, namely Recognition, no Recall.

I mean, if something is actually hidden, the user *might* stumble
across it, but after that, what? They would have to RECALL where that
area was in order to display that piece of the interface again.
That's surely asking too much.

I don't know how much clutter we are talking about here, but
minimising interface areas seems like a better approach.

The suggestion that users will find hidden areas intuitively seems a
bit optimistic to me, too... Intuitively, I wouldn't move my mouse
pointer around apparently empty space, thinking Oooh, maybe this
would be a good spot for a button... !

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Forms design / labels inside the fields

2010-02-10 Thread Francis Rowland
Hi Maciej

Everyone had given you good feedback already, but just to stick my
oar in...

From what I have read and seen demonstrated with eye-tracking
heatmaps (but not from first-hand experience), label placement inside
text boxes can cause a bit of trouble. People often look for labels to
the left of a text box, for example, so it might be weird when it
isn't there. Plus, and form element that appears to me completed
already can sometimes be ignored (in fact, thinking about it, I have
seen that in a test).

However, you or I probably wouldn't be deterred by that kind of
label placement, so it depends on experience. As Christina says, test
test test.

Jarrett and Gaffney have some really good stuff on forms in their
book, too. I think they would say that if the form is well design
overall, and the user is engaged in a dialogue with the form,
then the label placement is not such a big deal...

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Localized UX research in France or doing research in another country and language

2010-02-09 Thread Francis Rowland
Hello Jeremy

Another place you could try asking this question is with the France /
Luxembourg UPA people. They are pretty active and might be able to
offer you some guidance.

Their contact page (all in French... ) is at:
http://www.flupa.eu/contenu/contact

It includes an email address, as well as a contact form.

You could just try winging them an email in English, and see what
happens. If you have no luck, give me a shout, and I could email them
in French, on your behalf. I'm on their mailing list, but otherwise,
they've never heard of me, mind you! :).

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Search Pattern Library

2010-02-01 Thread Francis Rowland
Fantastic... and what great timing. Only last week, I was hunting for
patterns, and all I found was pretty screenshots of input boxes with
a Search button next to it.

I look forward to checking this out.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Marriott.com breaks the mold...

2009-12-15 Thread Francis Rowland
Yep, interesting approach to squeezing all that stuff on screen.
I will play devil's advocate, though...

Not so delightful when you turn off JavaScript.
Yes, it still functions, but some of the display is broken - not at
all what I would call graceful degrade.

Imagine you're a PA, making a booking for your boss on this website
from within your corporate network, where systems support insist on
having JS disabled (it does happen, right?)...

That huge long form on the left is quite daunting, and the feature
boxes are all over the place and difficult to read.

Probably not the user experience Marriott are aiming for in that
case.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Search interface design and usability

2009-12-08 Thread Francis Rowland
You bet... specifically for search interfaces, you should have a look
at Marti Hearst's book Search User Interfaces

http://searchuserinterfaces.com/

Her book is also freely available (electronic) on that website...
which is cool, since it is a subject I am diving into at the moment!

good luck
