Re: [IxDA Discuss] Masters Programs in Interaction Design (NYC - was Kansas)

2009-01-27 Thread Ray
Thanks Michael.

I'm still trying to figure out the best way to feed my brain. I'm
not sure I can swing a full time program right now anyway but it's
great to know there actually are some local options if the degree
track is the way I want to go.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Masters Programs in Interaction Design and Design Management at University of Kansas

2009-01-21 Thread Ray DeLaPena
As a long time system designer/BA/PM/SA/generalist type guy trying to
transition my career to IxD/UX I've been struggling to find a remote
curriculum because there shockingly seems to be no program in New York
City (at least that I'm aware of) -- never mind a program for people
working full time.

While I see the benefits of studio design study and the apparent
inability of such a group activity to be available virtually, I have
a big problem with the idea that we can't find a way to use
technology to impart the necessary skills and education that qualify
someone to perform these design activities. Unfortunately I don't
yet have a solution to that problem, but I certainly resist the idea
that it is insurmountable.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Practical UX tips for developers

2008-07-18 Thread Ray Shah
Last night there was an excellent presentation made at the NYJavaSIG
It was at Google's 9th Avenue Offices, there were well over 200 coders there.

Building a *WOW* User Experience in Java

Sorry this is after the fact.
Ben said he would post his slides on his site: http://www.feature50.com/ but
they're not up yet.

Best,

Subject: [IxDA Discuss] Practical UX tips for developers

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has done presentation for developers to show them
why is UX design relevant for them (not just designer's job) and offer them
practical tips. I've found many presentations on why UX is important, but
haven't found a lot tailor to the developer audience. I'm interested in
pratical tips that developers can apply to their work.

Thanks in advance!

Qixing

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Should external links really open in the same window?

2008-07-09 Thread Ray Shah
With respect to tabs, I really like the ability to turn a tab into a new
window. Safari 3 has this feature, Firefox 3 does not as yet.

Nielsen's point is still valid in certain instances. In the case of PDAs
/phones a new window is not possible, I think. Observing some less tech-savvy
people I work with, I think tabs are somehow less frightening than a whole new
window.

So there are two unknowns here (in the web environment at least) that are
beyond our control. How will the platform behave and what does the user
(reasonably) expect.

It would be interesting to see a reappraisal of this issue by Nielsen.

Best,

Ray

If you want to do comparisons, then you might want to have an item
created in a new window. Tabs are great, but sometimes you want to
compare items using multiple windows. There might also be some legal
reasons for completely separating one source from another source.

[IxDA Discuss] FW: How to improve graphic design skills?

2007-10-12 Thread Ray Sharma
Are you after:

1. How do I better use the tools I have to produce compelling graphic
designs (sorry I wanted to answer this one)
2. How do I personally become more creative in my designs?

1. Remember your tools help to speed up the production of designs and
do not replace the creative inspiration required. They can however allow you
to 'play' with ideas much more efficiently and quite often can lead you into
other avenues of creativity you never thought of quite quickly. The more you
understand the tools the faster you can turn around ideas, however those
ideas should have sound foundation initially.

2. Becoming more creative is more personal and as others have said
takes experience and a passion to excel in and as a HCI professional I would
guess your designs should have a fair amount of purpose to them. Reverse
engineering is a good place to start:

a. Take designs that interest you, ask others what they think
of your choices (begin to understand whether what you like appeals to others
- if not ask them why - what do they like?);
b. Dissect designs, what makes them work, what is it trying to
tell you or help you achieve (separate the functionality from the form);
c. Take designs and recreate them. Then improve or modify them
keeping the same essence of the design - review it with others which do they
prefer, what elements of your design do they like or not.

I guess I can keep going, however there is a common trend here - good
design, in my mind, appeals to others and answers a need (be it graphic
design or any other design field as appose to art)- so constantly getting
feedback and understanding it (or getting hired is good too!) is a good
start. With greater experience you will need less confirmation of your work
as other let you get on with it and a personal style evolves.

Workshops and course can be good if they are not just about the tools but
help you develop your creativity and appeal to others. If they just let you
get on with it and the only feedback you get is from your tutor (no matter
how good they are) I feel you will get less out of the course.
