Re: [IxDA Discuss] Required fields - one or the other

Here's a flawed example:

I don't like that the asterisk seems to be defined twice here.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Critique: Ranker.com

2009-10-07 Thread Sarah Weise
I agree with Neha. The site does not currently convey the "What's
in it for me" (WIFFM). Instead of the What, How, Why icons at the
top that users probably won't take the time to click on, it might be
beneficial to use this space to state the purpose and value in
relation to the user in 25 words or less... a "What you can do on
this site" area. Even something as simple as "Ranker lets you
create your own lists, and see others' lists" would let people know
what the site is and what you can do on it.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Consistent Usage of Log In/Log Out versus Login/Logout

2009-08-11 Thread Sarah Weise
There have been several postings about this topic on IXDA this year,
evaluating Log In/Log Out vs. Log in/Log out vs. Login/Logout vs.
Sign In/Sign Out vs. Sign in/Sign out.

Research shows us that small words written in title case (first
letter of each word is capitalized) - instead of sentence case (only
the first letter of the first word is capitalized) - are easier to
read. Therefore, I'd recommend either Log In/Log Out or Sign In/Sign
Out.

I tend to go with Log In/Log Out because it's just slightly shorter
than Sign In/Sign Out, but some people on this forum have stated that
they perceive Sign In/Sign Out to be more personal (have not seen
research on this though).

Re: [IxDA Discuss] "His/Her" vs. "Their" in website copy

2009-07-24 Thread Sarah Weise
Who are your users? Is this a formal website, or is it something more
casual?

If it's a more formal website or something with a serious tone (such
as a health-related site that a user would rely on to provide accurate
information), you might lose credibility with some folks by using
"their."

Not sure how reliable that Grammar Girl site is that someone else
posted, but here's what it recommends:

"Rewrite your sentences to avoid the problem. If that's not
possible, check to see if the people you are writing for have a style
guide. If not, use he or she if you want to play it safe, or use they
if you feel bold and are prepared to defend yourself."

Re: [IxDA Discuss] "His/Her" vs. "Their" in website copy

2009-07-21 Thread Sarah Weise
"Their" implies multiple partners (and multiple birthdays). Plus,
it's grammatically incorrect.

Could you say "Your significant other's birthday:" as a
compromise?

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Type ahead vs. auto fill

2009-07-09 Thread Sarah Weise
Typically, auto fill is when you type into a open-ended search box
(google, for example) and it automatically guesses what you want to
say as you type.

Type ahead works slightly differently. Go to Endless.com, Click on
"Womens", then start typing a brand into the "Brand" area in the
left navigation to narrow your results. This feature automatically
pulls up the items from the pre-set list of brands that match what
you are typing. It's not actually filling in your words for you.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] In search of: form design pattern

You may be able to put all the sections on one page, with sections
collapsed by default -- or just the first one open. Click to open
each section and answer the questions within. Make sure each section
has a clear, descriptive title though!

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Difference between Heuristic Evaluation and Expert Review

2009-06-19 Thread Sarah Weise
I also sat in on the UPA session in Portland last week where an
esteemed panel spent a full 90 minutes bantering about the semantic
differences between a heuristic evaluation and an expert review.

Honestly, the difference is so small that does it really matter?

Any review is better than no review - whether you're using
Nielsen's 2,000-something heuristics, a sub-set of those, your own
set of heuristics, or heuristics with your own experience (which is
probably based on heuristics you picked up somewhere along the lines
anyway).

My "expert" recommendation: to stop arguing over semantics and
start actually making websites and applications easier to use.
