Re: [IxDA Discuss] Practical UX tips for developers

2008-07-18 Thread Santiago Bustelo
We have recently done a 45' presentation for software architects and
developers at Microsoft´s RAF 2008 and MIX Essentials, Buenos Aires.

Summarized translation available at:
http://www.icograma.com/articles/raf2008.en.php

Additional notes about rhetorical strategies used:

INTERACTION DESIGN IN THE 21ST CENTURY

We shared childhood dreams and passion for technology with the
audience,
set an ambitious goal (a better world),
and established interaction design as an understandable and
achievable mean for the audience to that end.

THE CAVEMAN PROGRAMMER

The demo was received with open laughs and guilty smiling nods.
Displayed atrocities were a 'little secret' we shared with the
audience.

After the demo, the audience was aware that something was wrong.
But no one was able to point out what the problems were.
We had them interested in knowing the answer.

THE USER

"Huffman encoded design" (or "huffman encoded interface") is a
metaphor we found appropiate for programmers to understand interface
design tradeoffs.

Last night there was an excellent presentation made at the NYJavaSIG
It was at Google's 9th Avenue Offices, there were well over 200 coders there.

Building a *WOW* User Experience in Java

Sorry this is after the fact.
Ben said he would post his slides on his site: http://www.feature50.com/ but
they're not up yet.

Best,
Ray

Subject: [IxDA Discuss] Practical UX tips for developers

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has done presentation for developers to show them
why is UX design relevant for them (not just designer's job) and offer them
practical tips. I've found many presentations on why UX is important, but
haven't found a lot tailor to the developer audience. I'm interested in
pratical tips that developers can apply to their work.

Thanks in advance!

Qixing

Hi Qixing,

I have a presentation I've given to quite a few .NET user groups (devs) and
at one architect conf (minus the .NET stuff):
http://dotnettemplar.net/downloads/good-experience-dotNet.zip

Up to Slide 28, it is introductory/rhetorical stuff for UX. Slide 28 starts
talking about devs/architects applying it to what they do, and there are a
few slides specifically around .NET tooling (because it is for .NET UGs).

I think the two core areas for devs/architects are internalizing/changing
their core orientation (from tech to people); for that I have the core
principles, which no doubt could be expanded. The other core piece I think
they can use today is UX patterns. Those would be good starting points for
them to launch from. I also typically recommend LukeW's book on forms, as
that's a big %age of the typical biz dev's work, and it's an easy read.
Actually, I have a little post
herealong
those lines that is geared at Web devs.
I appreciate any feedback/suggestions for improvement.

Not a presentation, but from what I've read from Eric Schaffer's
book "Institutionalization of Usability", developers can better
concentrate on producing better inner-workings of applications
instead inundating themselves with design work better left to be
refined by an Interaction Designer or UX Designer.

Take it a step further and tools such as UI Libraries will help round
out standards making widgets and controls consistent across the brand.

The fear here for people in UX/IxD is that developers get too
creative in designing the controls - and once one person does this,
everyone does this in an organization, leaving every bit of UI
inconsistent. I know because I've seen this happen and it's not
fun to correct after the fact.
