[OSGeo-Discuss] Open Jump User survey : OSGeo India

2008-07-04 Thread RAVI KUMAR
Hi All,
at OSGeo the Indian chapter Open Jump is the most used and evangelised software
along with GRASS GIS.

1. It is used as a GIS that can be spread to the beginner and expert alike.
2. We have a mock exercise 'Locating a site for a Nuclear power plant', using a
set of
layers, which endears GIS to the user.
3. Project with OpenJUMP: For the parliamentary constituency of Rajahmundry
we have used GRASS, OpenJUMP and ILWIS extensively. This is going to be
    presented at FOSS4G 2008.
4. OpenJUMP + PostGIS
For Geologists we teach 'Mineral Prognostication',  with Mock Exercise
data
    which has become very popular.
5. OpenJUMP + Inkscape
For Geologists to make cartographic outputs acceptable in standard formats.
Thanks to the 'Vertex symbols plugin' and Printer plugin.. OpenJUMP is THE
GIS
    for Geological maps.

Mock Exercises: Soon would like to add the mock exercises freely down loadable.

Cheers
Ravi Kumar

We've had 14 responses to our June OpenJUMP user survey so far. I
think the number of responses have slowed down. I'm going to close the
survey on Friday morning. I'll try to get the results posted Friday
afternoon.

If you want to participate in the survey please do so before Friday morning.

Thanks,

The Sunburned Surveyor

You had mentioned to me earlier about GDAL/OGR from the infamous
Kyngchaos package, right?

Yes.

Do you have the command gdalinfo and ogrinfo

Yes:

refsvik$ gdalinfo
Usage: gdalinfo [--help-general] [-mm] [-stats] [-nogcp] [-nomd]
[-noct] [-checksum] [-mdd domain]* datasetname
refsvik$
refsvik$ ogrinfo
Usage: ogrinfo [--help-general] [-ro] [-q] [-where restricted_where]
[-spat xmin ymin xmax ymax] [-fid fid]
   [-sql statement] [-al] [-so] [--formats]
   datasource_name [layer [layer ...]]
refsvik$

- they will be your best friends soon.

I am not completely sure how these two specific programs from the gdal
package relates to the challenge of outputting a png from 2 shapefiles
(map and legend).
