[OSGeo-Discuss] Grand Rapids / West Michigan OSGEO members?

2011-04-05 Thread TJ Maciak

  Hello,

I recently attended the GIS In Action as well as the Open Source GIS Unconference at Portland State University and was very impressed by the Portland "chapter" of OSGEO.  I talked with the members there and it was suggested I try to find like-minded people in Michigan and see what can be done to either meet with an existing group, or try to form a new one if none already exists.

I am based out of Grand Rapids and was wondering if anybody on this list serv is from W. Michigan and if you could contact me.   I would even be interested in hearing from people outside of W. Michigan if they meet semi regularly to find out more information about their meetings.

  Thanks,

Is it possible to get such infrastructure from osgeo? Some people in
GearScape mailing list suggested to ask here for a trac instance and
even to apply for incubation. I like the incubation idea but I guess
we're not so big yet. Would it be possible at least to start by being
hosted? I think GGL2 is somewhat innovative and it could be
interesting for osgeo to include such a project if it ever succeeds.

Fernando,

Yes, OSGeo does sometimes provide mailing list, Trac and SVN services for
non-OSGeo (ie. non-incubating) projects. For mailing lists the barrier is
quite low. For Trac/SVN you need someone on the system administration
committee who is willing and able to do the work. That proponent then
makes a motion on the SAC mailing list, and once passed provides notice
to the board in case there are concerns. Generally speaking the hard
part of the process is finding someone willing and able to do the work.
The rest just slightly delays things.

We (on SAC) are generally more supportive of projects that we think have
a prospect of going through incubation at some point or that are closely
related to existing OSGeo projects.

Best regards,

Fernando,

You might also look at http://code.google.com/ or sourceforge, both
provide these services if you can not get a SAC advocate for your project.

Best regards,

[OSGeo-Discuss] Google Summer of Code: second call for students and mentors

2011-04-05 Thread Anne Ghisla

Hi all, and sorry for cross-posting,

this is a reminder that students application period is closing soon, on
April 8th 19:00 UTC :
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?month=4&day=8&year=2011&hour=19&min=0&sec=0&p1=0

So if you would like to participate as student:
  * read the list of ideas of your favourite projects
  * contact the developers to show interest for one or more ideas or
to discuss your own idea
  * most important: submit your application to Melange before the
deadline! It's better to write an almost perfect proposal than
to have no application at all. Remember that you can edit the
application up to the deadline, and answer mentors comments up
to April 22nd.

A reminder for OSGeo projects and mentors:
  * be sure to list all nice GSoC ideas on the relative page, and
have available mentors for them;
  * advertise GSoC on your communication channels, and be available
to discuss ideas with would-be students
  * Remind the students to put the proposal into Melange. If it
isn't in Melange it doesn't exist.

Here is the link to apply, for both students and mentors:
http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/org/google/gsoc2011/osgeo

Looking forward to see more applications!

[OSGeo-Discuss] Does osgeo provide infrastructure for non-incubating projects?

2011-04-05 Thread Fernando González
Hi all, I'm new on the list so I'll introduce myself. I'm Fernando
González Cortés and I'm currently developing GearScape[1], which is a
little GIS application that provides a geoprocessing language to
process spatial data. Currently we're developing a new geoprocessing
language from scratch, called GGL2, that will be easily connected to
other GIS applications, for example with gvSIG[2]. We've just
published the first milestone[3] and, as it is a bit difficult to use
yet, we've created some videos[4] (english subtitles) so that
everybody can have an idea of what we're working on.

So far, the new language is being developed by Víctor González Cortés
and I (yes, brothers) but recently some people got interested on it
and we're trying to build a developer community. The first step is to
create a work group to learn GGL2 technologies so we need a mailing
list and a public SCM (we work with a private one currently).

Best regards.
