I would like to nominate Guido Stein for OSGeo Charter membership.

As most people should know, Guido was co-chair of the Boston LOC for 2017.
And, as was expected, he did an amazing job. The conference was a complete
success and Guido's touches were everywhere, with the detail and effort that
he puts into things. He is currently working efforts to establish a US local
chapter of OSGeo. He is a valuable member of the community and he should be
recognized as a charter member.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] "Hostile Takeover" -- what do we mean by this?

2017-08-30 Thread Jody Garnett
Gotcha, that is indeed a trouble, the cro role is tough.

I love this positive conversation - wish we were doing it the week before
elections to alleviate concern.

This is one of those things were a link (or the full text) may be required
for future emails.

With the words of wisdom from Frank, Jody, and others -- is it fair to
say that Charter Members have the responsibility of voting, as well as
"preserving the integrity of the OSGeo Foundation"? That seems a less,
well, hostile, way to express the main idea that seems to have come out of
 this discussion.

This is good, but as a reminder: the reason I brought this up to
discuss-list originally was to give voice to concerns of new nominees --
who do not necessarily see our "guidance for candidate selection", only the
brief email from CRO asking if they accept the responsibility of
"protect(ing) against hostile takeover".

I don't think we've fully addressed that original concern here yet.

 Hi discuss,

In the notification emails from CRO to new charter member nominees, the
 following is included (emphasis mine):

*"(Charter Members) have the following responsibilities: (1) annually
vote for OSGeo Board Members; (2) annually vote for new OSGeo Charter
Members and (3) be aware of and protect against a hostile takeover of
 OSGeo."*

I have had more than one nominee of mine contact me asking what exactly
this means. I agree with their concerns: this is strange language to use,
is not reflected in our bylaws, and frankly does not fit the image I
presented when I first contacted them asking if they would accept a
 nomination.

It may be a language barrier or simply a misunderstanding, but can we
clarify what is meant by using this kind of verbiage, and consider a
 re-wording?

 Thanks,
 Sara

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Fwd: Nomination of Rob Emanuele as OSGeo Charter Member

2017-08-30 Thread Jody Garnett
Very much agreed, Rob Emanuele has been one of the most amazing additions
to our community in recent memory.

He started organizing events his first year and does a wonderful job
advocating open source spatial to new groups. I have been impressed by his
passion, dedication and fearless attitude that goes well beyond his role at
Azavea (although they are a pretty fearless bunch). I especially like quiet
enthusiasm for individuals and projects that inspire those around him.

I'd like to nominate Steven Ottens as OSGeo Charter Member. He is a long
time member of the community, founder and former board member of the
OSGeo Dutch language chapter. He gave talks and workshops at several
FOSS4Gs and also contributed to projects like OpenLayers, MapBuilder and
MapQuery.

Cheers,

I encourage everyone to look at the larger page, some of this is covered

Hello,

this time I follow the process: http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Election_2017
* nomination was confirmed with Tönis
* email: Tõnis Kärdi tonis.ka...@gmaail.com
* more information: http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/User:Tkardi

I would like to nominate Tõnis Kärdi from Estonia for OSGeo charter
membership.

Tönis was present at FOSS4G 2016 and FOSS4G Europe 2017 and it was great
to discuss with him. He gave talks on FOSS4G Europe and was involved in
the code sprint.

And he has now the chance to create an Estonian OSGeo Local Chapter and
build up a great local community.

Tõnis has been active in the geo field for approximately 15 years but is
a relative newcomer to the world of osgeo and works with open data and
open source GIS solutions at his work at Estonian Ministry of
Environment IT Center (KEMIT).

http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/User:Tkardi

Would be a pleasure to welcome him as a charter member.

2017-08-30 Thread Margherita Di Leo
Hi,

If I may still chime in, I don't think this keeps the meaning of what was
originally intended, I would add diversity to integrity. In an extreme
example, if you consider the risk of green aliens taking over osgeo, those
aliens may have integrity and still if they are too many, they would
naturally start to represent the interest of their planet. Diversity is
IMHO what would keep the balance.

Dear all,
it is pleasure for me to nominate Manuel Grizonet [1] for OSGeo Charter
Membership.

Many people know very well Manuel for the huge activities he is leading
for years in OSGeo. Manuel is involved in the development team and is
PSC member of the OrfeoToolbox that has been successfully incubated this
year.

Manuel is also taking part in the organisation of the OTB HackFest each
year where the OTB community can meet. Other communities can join too
and are very welcome at this event, I got the luck to participate in
such a kind of event and I have to say that I was amazed by the great
work they do there. During the hack fest, users and developers meet to
share their use cases of the software, discuss the next steps for the
project, but also the issue they may face using this or that part of the
project and so on. It is just a very nice and efficient way to have
feedbacks from the community and to meet often.

Manuel is very open to discussion even when, like I do, you have only
question to ask him and not much to offer.

I am confident that Manuel will be a great addition to the OSGeo Charter
Members list.

All the best,

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] "Hostile Takeover" -- what do we mean by this?

2017-08-30 Thread Luigi Pirelli
Hi Sara,

without having a deep knowledge of decision took at higher levels,
IMHO OS and particularly OSGEO worlds were already faced this kind of
"hostile takeover". Not necessarly as "takeover" but trying to do some
product protocols as OGC standards (think to lidar formats, map
servers corporate products years ago).
We are in a historical phase with GFOSS is growing more and more,
probably stressing his "almost" horizontal nature to something new...
but what is this "new" or "different"?
In QGIS world, probably due the nature of historical components
(mostly europeans), we structured the organization also to
avoid/reduce these hostile effects... is this a intercultural
difference or a real think to be aware?

tnx to rise up this aspect.
