It is my pleasure to nominate Gabriele Prestifilippo as a Charter Member
for OSGeo. Gabriele is involved in the OSGeo community for some years
now. He started by collaborating on the OSGeo Live to include the NASA
WorldWind project, and since then he contributed to many open source
software projects and still is an active developer for some OSGeo projects.
He was a student in the Google Summer of Code program last year with
OSGeo, working on NASA WorldWind, while this year he helped by
volunteering as a GSoC mentor.
He represents a valuable resource for our community. His enthusiasm and
passion for OSGeo software make him an excellent candidate for becoming
an OSGeo Charter Member.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] 2017 membership process reminder

2017-09-07 Thread Jody Garnett
Thanks Vasile & Jeff:

In today's osgeo meeting we discussed how to handle nominations that are
light on details (some nominations only work if you know the person).

Can I ask the people who have seconded a nomination with a "+1" to provide
additional details on what positive attribute the candidate displays in the
our community to be considered as a charter member.

For reference here is the positive attributes
 list
from the membership process page:

*Recommended membership selection criteria include:*

   - *Members should believe in the general goals of the Foundation. To
support and promote the use of free and open source geospatial software,
education and data in a collaborative manner.*
   - *Previous participation in or support of OSGeo activities*
   - *The person should already have made a contribution to free and open
source geospatial software, education or open data.*
   - *The person should be willing to put in time and effort on the
Foundation, perhaps joining committee(s), or volunteering in some other way
   that gets the Foundation going.*
   - *Members should be prepared to work constructively and positively
towards the goals of the Foundation. Good teamwork skills are an asset.*

*Membership nominations should strive to promote diversity:*

   - *Nominate members representing a diversity of geographic regions,
diversity of projects, diversity of programming languages.*
   - *Nominate members representing and diversity of interests (e.g.,
   corporate, hobbyist, educational, scientific).*
   - *Nominate members representing a diversity of humanity including
   gender and race *

Thank you to everyone taking part in the nomination process, it is great to
see our community growing!

Additional information, since I did not provide any reasons for my support.

Gretchen has done wonders for open source advocacy and outreach, her blog
posts and twitter activity reach and inspire so many. She is also a
supportive member of our community helping out with the recent
website/rebranding most notably with the cartography employed for the
website and style guide.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] 2017 membership process reminder

2017-09-07 Thread Jeff McKenna

Hi everyone!

A reminder that today is the last day for nominations, so that means
"anywhere on Earth" today you can still submit nominations to
c...@osgeo.org Note that we will accept *confirmations* from these
nominees for another 24 hours after that (each nominee must accept the
nomination by replying to our direct message).

Thanks all! It's been great to see the passionate leaders from all
over, supporting OSGeo.

Dear all,

I would like to remind you that the rules/steps for 2017 OSGeo new
charter members nomination[1] are described in the Membership Process
wiki page[2]. To summarize, if you want to nominate a person you should:

1. confirm with the nominated person first;
2. email c...@osgeo.org with their name, contact email and paragraph
describing why you are recommending this person as a Charter Member;

The CRO will verify with the nominee that they are willing to stand for
nomination and then will send the nomination to disc...@osgeo.org.

I'm sending this reminder because some nominations did not follow those
steps. More specifically, some nominations were sent directly to this
list, CC-ing or not the CRO. All those nominations and the seconded
votes will be considered after nominee confirmation to the CRO that is
willing to stand for nomination (confirmation emails already sent by CRO).

2017-09-07 Thread Jody Garnett
Can I ask the people who have seconded this nomination to provide
information on what positive attribute Dr. Anujit Vansarochana displays in
the our community to be considered as a charter member.

For reference here is the positive attributes
 list
from the membership process we are following:

This is a reference to my own ignorance of Dr. Anujit Vansarochana
activities and no slight is intended or implied. I have tried to search the
discussion email list, geoforall email list and osgeo wiki to learn more.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] [SoC] GSoC 2017 Results!

2017-09-07 Thread Vicky Vergara
Hi all
This is an unordered list of congratulations, it was a team work, with
three components, and no component is less than the other.

I want to congratulate the GSoC administrators team.
A mentor follows the weekly reports of the own project, and you follow
all
That is a huge task.
PS Thanks for supporting us with your valuable comments and reminders.

I also congratulate the students,
Your efforts improve the open source community, and in this case in
particular, it improves the OSGeo community.
Working "iong distance" its not an easy task; there are no schedules, there
is no one behind your back,.
With the technology, in the future, I can see that home office will be
trendy, and with this program you gained more traits to be a successful
independent person.
PS. You can be sure that your code will be cared for. But if you keep on
contributing you can also take care of someone else's code

Fellow mentors:
It is always rewarding to see how students evolve from novice to master on
the topic they worked on.
The students learned to write Proposals listened to Suggestions & Comments
(PSC) to make the development.
That is what makes projects moving.
Congratulations for the outcome!

Vicky

 Forwarded Message

I would like to nominate Tina Cormier for OSGeo Charter Membership.

Tina was a star of FOSS4G2017 in Boston, presenting a workshop (‘Geo
with R? Yes We Can!’) and three talks (‘A Journey through R for Geo’, ‘R
in the Z-dimension: Processing lidar data for free’, and ‘Two laptops
and a bag of thumb drives: Knitting together a global community using
FOSS4G’)

She has taught workshops in countries all over the world, from Peru to
Nepal, as well as her home country the USA. Workshop topics range from
programming in R, using QGIS, to processing lidar with open source tools.

Tina promotes open source actively on Twitter and is now working with
OSGeo-Live project on R quickstarts, and lidR package on improving user
friendliness.

Tina would be an asset to OSGeo as a remote sensing data scientist who
works in academic research and industry, and helps represent women, R,
LIDAR, and power user communities.

Ben Caradoc-Davies is a longstanding member of the GeoServer
community - first with his role at the Australian research group
"CSIRO" and more recently as a independent contractor from is native
    New Zealand.

As a contributor Ben has demonstrated excellent leadership
(volunteering with the GeoServer Project Steering Committee and
GeoTools Project Management Committee) and mentoring of new
contributors by answering questions, offering encouragement, backed
by kind words and constructive reviews.

Ben is exceptionally generous with his time: willing to take on the
day to day challenges of running a project, leading meetings,
issuing multiple releases a year, and stepping in for emergencies.
The team has come to depend on Ben's dedication to quality watching
out for the build servers and monitoring the travis automated
builds.

Ben is also takes on some of the harder open source challenges for
the foundation as a whole. In my time as an OSGeo board member Ben
has helped clearly articulated our legal questions, and taken part
in meetings with our legal council.

I also had the privilege of organizing a foss4g-au event with Ben
and follow his open source advocacy work in Australia.

Although it is perhaps not a character reference I personally
appreciate Ben's coding and communication skills. His ability to
contribute code in a consistent, professional manner, and his
communication skills make working on the GeoServer project that much
    easier.

Dear OSGeo community,

it is our pleasure to announce that 13 GSoC students have successfully
completed the program this year! You can find out more at:
https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/organizations/4660070039158784/#projects

We would like to wholeheartedly thank all the mentors who dedicated their
invaluable time and experience to this program, you are the core of GSoC!
Thanks also to our students, we are sure you learnt a lot and also had some
fun, and we hope you decide to remain in the OSGeo community becoming active
developers and the future generation of GSoC mentors!

If you participated this year as a student or as a mentor, please take the time
to leave us your feedback, as we try to improve the experience each year. We
created a page
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code_2017_Improvements where you
can leave your comments and suggestions, please feel free to expand it, or to
contact us directly to discuss your ideas. We are also collecting your
questions and topics that you would like us to bring to the mentor summit
(13-15 October, where Rohith Reddy and Margherita Di Leo will represent OSGeo).

Our activities don’t end here! You’ll soon receive our call to participate to a
virtual meeting to discuss about OSGeo’s participation at “Google Code-in”, a
program addressed to kids aged 13-17. We are very excited about that!

Meanwhile, read more at: https://developers.google.com/open-source/gci/

That’s all for now! Stay tuned..

[OSGeo-Discuss] Shapefile to GPX conversion

2017-09-07 Thread Andrea Giacomelli
Hi - I initially posted this to qgis-user, but in fact there will be a
broader solution so I am relaying this here.

I need to provide GPX data, derived from some shapefiles, to be used and
edited in the Garmin Basecamp package.

I have tried with the basic export option via "Save as GPX" from QGIS
(2.16)..
the resulting GPX is uploaded, but each feature of my initial layer in
interpreted as a separate track, which makes usability on the base camp
side difficult.

I would like to ask if you have encountered the same issue (with that
package or other GPX viewers) and if you have identified a solution, either
with specific flags via the QGIS Save as GPX option, or with a different
workflow.

TIA for any feedback, and best regards
