[OSGeo-Discuss] Earth Observation Open Science and Innovation

2018-03-12 Thread Hogan, Patrick (ARC-PX)
Dear Open-Source-Minded Gentle Humans,

I wish to draw your attention at once to two areas of possible interest.

1. One is an elegant technical description for ^how^ EarthServer is able to
tame ^Big EO Data.^ Think datacube!

Fostering Cross-Disciplinary Earth Science Through Datacube Analytics
https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-319-65633-5_5

Note the platform of choice for www.EarthServer.eu to see this indubitably
dense data, none other than https://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/

ESA has also standardized on the WebWorldWind platform, a platform ESA and NASA
are advancing together, for the benefit of all!

The WorldWind virtual globe has been there as Open Source, years before any
other, having been around now for well over 15 years. The mission then, as now,
has always been to get the planet onto one-page for spatial data "because that
goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills."

2. If you want to accelerate at the speed of enlightenment with your spatial
data, power up with this super-charged starter app, OS all the way!

Thanks Till, I grabbed the list from the wiki (
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Sponsorship_Opportunities_2018) and
finally made the news announcement. See earlier email discussion
.

To be cross listed sponsors need to ask, there is an example of just such
email on the how to sponsor
 website page.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Student application period for GSoC begins today

2018-03-12 Thread Helmut Kudrnovsky
Dear Community,

this is a reminder that student application period starts today at
https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?msg=GSoC+2018=20180312T17=136

The application deadline is 27 March.

Students are reminded to use the template at
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code_Recommendations_for_Students#Template

It is also important that students don’t just submit their proposals, but take
the time to discuss the proposals with mentors and the community in developers
mailing lists, and modify them according to the feedback. Remember that the
earlier you prepare your proposals, the more time you have to get feedback and
therefore the more chances to get selected.

Usually last minute, never discussed proposals are not even considered.

Remember that GSoC is a highly competitive program, so demonstrate your skills,
be proactive!

[OSGeo-Discuss] GIS applied to municipality management: Certification and links to the complete free course

2018-03-12 Thread Mario Carrera

Hi all,

the certification of the course about Geographic Information Systems
applied to municipality management as well as the links to the complete
course are now available.

This certification period is opened after the publishing of the last
modules of the course, but it will be open continuously, so that any
user can get it at any moment when the different modules are finished.

The course is totally free, through 24 videotutorials where the
different tools available in gvSIG Desktop for municipality management
are shown, apart from how to use gvSIG Mobile, the mobile application
for census, inventory, inspections... management. At the end of the
course there are several modules about gvSIG Online, the integral
platform to create Spatial Data Infrastructures, that allows to manage a
municipality internally in an efficient way as well as to publish
cartography to be consulted by the citizens.

To get this certification, a complete exercise must be completed, and it
has a minimum cost of € 30, necessary to cover the expenses related to
the evaluation and certification. The user will get two certificates:

  - Course completion certificate, which will include all the
information related to the training contents acquired.
  - Official gvSIG User certificate, having completed the 90 credits
necessary for this.

Both the information about the certification and the links to the
complete course are available from the gvSIG Blog [1]

and relatively new event and local chapter. However, we are expecting, and
working towards, up to 100 delegates for our one day event.

There will be sponsorship opportunities available - please see our event

then colleagues in Portugal FOSS4G-Europe 2018 (July 17 to 19th, 2018).

The pace of spread of Open ideas in Geo around the world is truly amazing and
I thank all our colleagues globally for their help and support for Open

Later this week ( 8th to 9th of March 2018) , OSGeo:UK will be bringing
together all those interested in free and open source geospatial software for
FOSS4G UK 2018 [1] . I would like to send my thank you to all our amazing

Dear Jody,

many thanks for this information! Indeed you missed one upcoming event.

In parallel to the OSGeo codesprint from 21.-24.th of March the FOSSGIS
conference will take place in Bonn. We have 450 attendees and with that
one of the bigger events in our OSGeo-calendar.

We have quite some sponsors:

https://www.fossgis-konferenz.de/2018/ (scroll down)

What must we do in order to get these sponsors cross listed as
OSgeo-sponsors?

Thanks, Till
