Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Is GmapGIS open source?

2021-03-26 Thread Dan Little
There is always cost to making software.

James is pointing out the meaning of “free” in this context. There is an
implication the software is also free of cost to use for an end user.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] us election data

2020-11-23 Thread Dan Little
There isn't a real "national rollup" of this data that will be readily
available. You will need to go to each state's Secretary of State
website and get that date. Quality and formats will vary. Minnesota's
is quite good:

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] FOSS4G 2018 sponsorship

2018-02-25 Thread Dan Little
IBM, Google, and I believe even Microsoft have all sponsored various forms
of the conference over the years. There are commits in repos from ESRI
employees. Python, gdal, and other projects are used directly in ESRI
software. Sponsoring a conference is a pretty small, but visible way, to
show support.

I'm actually a +1 for this. Changing to "The OSGeo Conference" would
give the description right on the tin and ensure that OSGeo remains

Maybe you can also check some more generic and powerful library like

It is also wise to clip the features on the server side; not on the client

 I hope it helps,

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] linux distro preferences

2014-11-17 Thread Dan Little
I've used the lot of them and some more times than not, it has come down to
client requirements for which distro needs to be used.

I will ring a voice in favour of CentOS. Maybe it's really in favour of
RHEL which is where I've spent quite a bit of time. And really, I think
I'm in favour of using RPM. I've found myself much happier using RPM to
build deployable packages for clients, including localized RPM-install
databases, than I have been using .DEB deploys. It could be that I don't
have the zen of Deb down yet, a complete fault of my own, but RPM has been
easier, it seems, for that type of work.

That said, when I'm whipping up a light-weight sever or running things on a
laptop, I'll gravitate towards one of the Debian/Ubuntu variants such as
Mint, Bohdi, or raw-Debian for server stuff.
