[OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo 2020 Board of Directors elections: campaign period

2020-12-02 Thread Jorge Gustavo Rocha
Dear OSGeo charter members,

We have five candidates for the board of directors [1]. We are grateful
to all of them for making themselves available for this job.

Without knowing the candidates and their proposals for the next two
years, it is difficult to vote. We invite you to look at candidate
manifestos [2].

Please use the Discuss mailing list to ask your questions or to raise
your concerns. The candidates will share their perspective on those topics.

If you missed our annual general assembly (which was online this year
[3]), this is your opportunity to "have your say".

Best regards,

Jorge Gustavo Rocha and Anne Ghisla

[OSGeo-Discuss] 2019 OSGeo board of directors election - voting period extended

2019-11-30 Thread Jorge Gustavo Rocha
Dear OSGeo members,

The 2019 OSGeo board of directors election is still running.

Unfortunately, today our LimeSurvey instance was down, from early
morning (first problem reported at 5:56) until 18:00 (UTC time).

Fortunately, our SAC team was able (even on a Saturday) to put it back
online. Thank you to Markus and Regina (she did the magic!) for
recovering LimeSurvey.

Due to this inconvenience, we extended the voting period until tomorrow
night, Sunday, 2019-12-01, 23:59 (UTC time).

Please cast your vote, if you didn't do it yet.

Best regards,

[OSGeo-Discuss] 2019 OSGeo board elections - invitations sent

2019-11-27 Thread Jorge Gustavo Rocha
Dear charter members,

The voting period for the OSGeo board of directors has already started,
according to the 2019 elections calendar [1].

The invitation was sent from our LimeSurvey instance, on Tuesday
morning. We updated more than 50 emails addresses since the previous
election.

Unfortunately, 15 emails were not delivered (for different reasons, but
mostly rejected by smtp filters). We resent them this afternoon. We hope
they will arrive to the destination.

In any case, if you didn't receive an invitation, please contact the CRO
at c...@osgeo.org. We will send the invitation using another smtp server.

Happy voting,

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Invitation to participate in the 2018 OSGeo Charter Member elections

2018-10-20 Thread Jorge Gustavo Rocha
Hi Cameron,

Thanks for the feedback. The list is available at:
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/New_Member_Nominations_2018

You can reach the link from https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Election_2018

In the LimeSurvey form, there is a link for each nominee that points to
this list. Before you second a nomination, you can see why that person
was nominated. For those who have written profile, there is also a link
to that.

Have you tried the form? Please do it ASAP and tell us if we need to
improve something.

Thanks,

Jorge (CRO helper)

[OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo Christmas card

2015-12-16 Thread Jorge Gustavo Rocha

Hi,

I really would like to have a OSGeo Christmas card, to send to our local
chapter members and to add it to my email signature.

Since some of us can make such wonderful maps, maybe someone can create
an OSGeo Christmas card. Any volunteer out there? Maybe Till can create
one that includes FOSS4G 2006 :-)

Regards,

J. Gustavo

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] FOSS4GNA - Someone is watching you :-o

2015-12-16 Thread Jorge Gustavo Rocha

Hi Jeroen,

Thanks for your constructive message. Ian was very constructive also.

Maybe I spend too much time coding and I miss a few emails. Did Jeff
resign? What have we done to upset him so much?

Regards,

Jorge Gustavo

Thanks Ian for this email! I fully support what you are writing. It is
very much time to stop the negative sentiments around LocationTech,
FOSS4G conference offers that had LocationTech as a partner and so
forth. Constructive collaboration is all we need within OSGeo AND with
others in the (geo-)community.

I’ve heard negative sentiments about the FOSS4G 2017 selection process.
As a member of the Conference Committee I would like to state here that
I am convinced the LocationTech issue was not as decisive for most
members as people outside the committee seem to think. It was an aspect
discussed thoroughly, as were other aspects of the proposals.

I hope the Face to Face meeting end of January by the OSGeo board hosted
in our GeoCat office will be constructive and positive from all angles.
But at this stage I also call upon the OSGeo Board to come forward with
a statement that helps to unify the OSGeo community and give directions.
There seems to be a vacuum in the leadership right now with Jeff’s
sudden resignation that should be filled as soon as possible.

Greetings,
Jeroen

This negative "bashing" of other organisations has to completely stop
because it is having a massive negative impact on OSGeo.

We've recently lost a respected former board member (who has resigned
his charter member status) and the OSGeo president, both in relation
to how we've conducted ourselves in relation to other organisations in
the community. These internal losses are not due to there being other
organisations in the geospatial world, nor how they are acting - but
instead our losses are due to how we ourselves are thinking and behaving.

OSGeo should positively support all elements of the geospatial
community including users, developers and also other organisations to
the fullest and best of our ability. By doing this we become stronger
(instead of weaker) and will remain useful, relevant and of interest
to the community who will continue to invest their energy and efforts
with us and recognise our unique value and position.

In relation to LocationTech - similar divisions exist across the
entire Open Source world (take a look at LibreOffice and OpenOffice,
or MariaDB and MySQL). The broard "FOSS4G" community (encompassing
both OSGeo and LocationTech) is not alone in facing this, and my hope
is that OSGeo can once again be a beacon to the rest of the open
source world and show how best to embrace these differences,
understand the strengths and weakness in both camps, and work together
for the positive benefit of our diverse community.

You were doing fine until above. The rest of your post is indeed
very relevant and useful and argues correctly for sanity instead
of knee-jerk accusations (until the above assertions, of course).

The point is, there seems to be a fairly strident Location Tech
bashing going on, and it is getting to be tiring. Let's stick to
keeping OSGeo a fun, useful champion of free and open geospatial
without becoming anti-anything-free, partisan and possibly irrelevant.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Which web project supports clipping/intersection?

2015-07-15 Thread Jorge Gustavo Rocha

Hi Dan,

Maybe you can also check some more generic and powerful library like
OpenLayers [1,2] or Leaflet [3].

To use OpenStreetMap data, you can start play with Overpass API [4].

It is also wise to clip the features on the server side; not on the
client side.

I hope it helps,

J. Gustavo

Hi all, as a long time desktop developer, I'm now building web mapping

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Is there a javascript library that can perform basic geoprocessing on
geoJSON features?

We're retrieving features from OpenStreetMap and need to clip/intersect
features...

Thanks in advance,

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo Governance

2012-05-27 Thread Jorge Gustavo Rocha

Hi,

+1 on the current decision model. If the discussions are made in an open
fashion, as being done, everyone as the possibility to express the
opinion and bring the new issues to the discussion. Maybe we need more
people paying attention about what is going on, but we don't need
another level on the hierarchy.

Jorge

Hi Arnulf and the whole OSGeo Board,

+1 as a vote of confidence in the board and in this decision by them.
Please keep things moving and if you feel things need a broader
discussion I'm sure you will let us know. I do think notices of
decisions like your email are very helpful to keep us up to date with
what decisions are getting made, and making it clear, like you did, that
they are a notice to inform OR a request for comment should resolve
an confusion by potential readers.

Thank you for the update.

Dear Members of OSGeo,
we have an important issue on governance coming up again and again. It
suggests that OSGeo Board decisions should be complemented by votes from
the Charter Members when important and strategic decisions have to
be taken. Something like this:

[snip]

For such important decisions, I think that it would maybe
worth making Charter members vote too, just like to get an
major orientation decided by 120 people instead of only 8.

[snip]

Initially this sounded like a good idea to me so we discussed this in
Denver and then again in Seattle at the last f2f board meetings plus on
the list and during regular IRC board meetings. We have come to a
different conclusion and want to explain why and ask for comments.

Introducing another level of voting introduces a hierarchy to OSGeo
which we have so far avoided and which we should - in my personal
opinion - continue to avoid. We have committees for all important areas
of work. If we lack a committee any member can suggest to form it. Most
decisions are taking in the committees and they are pretty open to
everything. Some committees function better, some not so - but this is
entirely up to the regular members who make up the committees.

We have a functioning board of directors for some of the day to day
operations and to approve or reject decisions taken by committees. This
is a health check and makes sure we do not go astray. The board is
recruited and elected by trusted Charter Members. This is their role and
it is their only role. There is not need for another role at this level.
If any regular member wants to become active, go for it. Same for ex
board members. Whenever they think the current board is wrong they can
say so. And they can suggest how to do it better, just like any regular
member.

Whenever a committee does not function but a decision has to be taken
the board steps up and takes over. This is one reason why we have the
board, to keep rolling. All other decisions, especially strategic and
important ones are taken by regular members who do things.

By introducing a new level of decisions - for example the Charter
Members - we gain nothing. Instead we introduce an artificial hierarchy
which does not help anybody. Instead it will discourage regular members
to speak up and become active. And it is anti do-ocratic because it is
easy to say yes or no to a motion but so much harder to formulate that
motion in the first place. We need people who creatively bring up new
things and not decide over what others have done.

Thank you for your attention,
Arnulf

PS:
Apart form this only very few Charter Members actually speak up at all -
a big thank you to those who do! Running a Charter and Board election is
always a major pain and takes weeks to complete. It is impractical to do
this more than once a year.
