[OSGeo-Discuss] [OSGeo in GSoC 2023] Call for Project Ideas - GSoC 2023 | Deadline - Jan 31, 2023

2023-01-18 Thread Rajat Shinde via Discuss
Dear All,

Greetings! Wishing you all a very happy new year.

It is the time of the year to start preparing for OSGeo's participation in
the Google Summer of Code 2023 [1]. With the great success of GSoC 2022
projects [2], we are highly excited and motivated to invite the OSGeo
projects (Projects, Incubation projects, Guest Projects) to begin compiling
the project ideas for GSoC 2023.

In order to participate in proposing ideas as a project under the OSGeo
umbrella organization, you just need to send us (admins: ) the URL for your project's GSoC ideas Wiki page. If you are
participating for the first time, then you may visit [3] for reference.

*Please remember that every idea should indicate:*

   1. A title
   2. Brief descriptions of projects that can be completed in ~175 hours or
~350 hours of your GSoC contributor’s time (and labeled appropriately)
   3. 3 Mentors' Details - Name, Email (Primary and Supporting mentors)
   4. For each project, a list of prerequisites, a description of
programming skills needed, and an estimation of the difficulty level
   5. A test for the students to submit to your evaluation. The test aims
at evaluating if the student is capable of the project, so please design
the test having in mind the basic skills required to complete the project.

The organization application period starts *Jan* *23, 2023* and will be
open till *Feb 7, 2023*. So, we expect all the URLs by *Jan 31, 2022* (~12
days from now). Here is the complete GSoC 2023 timeline [4].

*Note*:
1. GSoC 2023 follows the new changes introduced with GSoC 2022. We
sincerely recommend going through the announcement mentioning new changes
[5].
2. If you floated ideas in GSoC 2022 but couldn't progress ahead, then it
is a great time to start working on those ideas again.

Thanks, and please forward the information to your respective project's
mailing list! Always waiting for further queries. :)

(PS- A call for contributors to the OSGeo project ideas with instructions
on interacting with projects will be sent soon, so please be ready for
welcoming new members to the community.)

Cheers,
Rajat for OSGeo GSoC Administration Team

[OSGeo-Discuss] New Year Wishes - Message from the OSGeo Board

2023-01-04 Thread Rajat Shinde via Discuss
Dear OSGeo Community,

We trust you are all doing well and we wish you a happy new year, full of
happiness, peace, and power to achieve whatever you plan.

Let us take a moment to reflect on the last year and congratulate ourselves
for the amazing work we accomplished as a community.

After a 2-year break, our community enjoyed a successful FOSS4G 2022 in
Florence, Italy. A big shout out to the FOSS4G 2022 LOC (local organizing
committee) for their immense hard work.

Now, we are excited to support FOSS4G 2023 [1] which will take place in
Prizren, Kosovo. We wish the best to the LOC, the FLOSSK in their work and
echo they have our full support.

It is extremely satisfying to see that our community is expanding. This
year, we had 37 new members joining as Charter Members [2]. A warm welcome
to all and we look forward to your continued contributions in 2023. OSGeo’s
official Telegram channel [3] was reactivated just after FOSS4G 2022 for
enhancing connectivity. It is also bridged via OSGeo’s matrix - so you can
communicate with everyone if you want to use IRC, Element, or a matrix
client of your choice [4] - as well as the Telegram client. Please join in
if you haven’t already (https://t.me/+CPX1K4L0uuY0MDA0). 

The board elections were also conducted successfully with Ariel Anthieni
joining the board and replacing Dr. Michele Tobias who decided to not run
again. We thank Dr. Michele Tobias for her timely and productive
contributions to the Board. The new board [5] convenes for the first time
in January 2023.

With the intention of being closer to the community, in 2022 the OSGeo
Board started to send a succinct summary of meetings. We hope that in the
rush of every day’s work, the community members can find out in a 3 min
read what the board has been up to. For a more direct line, the meetings
are held on an open platform and are open for public participation. The
meeting minutes for the last meeting can be found at [6].

In 2022, we progressed with starting and concluding various initiatives and
signing new MoUs. This truly strengthens our community, so we plan to keep
it up in the year to come!

In name of the whole board, I wish you all the best for 2023!

Cheers,

Rajat

Dear all,

Please join us in congratulating the 6 successful
OSGeo Google Summer of Code 2022 contributors who have successfully passed

In the 2nd year of its inception, the 6 OSGeo GSoC contributors presented
their work in a special session during the FOSS4G 2022 [2]. We will share
the recording of the session soon.

A big thanks to the OSGeo mentors for their constant guidance and

[OSGeo-Discuss] Announcement: Special session for OSGeo Google Summer of Code 2022 Contributors in the FOSS4G 2022

2022-07-01 Thread Rajat Shinde via Discuss
Dear OSGeo GSoC Contributors,

We are elated to share with you that following the trend that started in
FOSS4G 2021, the International FOSS4G 2022 conference organizing team has
allotted a special session for all the OSGeo GSoC 2022 participants. This
is a wonderful opportunity for all of you to share your work. The schedule
of the session can be accessed here [1].

In this regard, we request you to be prepared for your talk. You can
include an introduction of your work, the state of the project before you
started working, your developments, and most importantly, your experience
while working with the OSGeo community.

*Next Steps:*
1. For us:

   1. Adding all of you as speakers to the session.

2. *For you*:

   1. *You might have already received an email from the FOSS4G 2022 team
regarding your registration details. If not, kindly let us know urgently.*
   2. Acknowledge this email as soon as you read this (even "I am in!"
works :-) ) so that we know that you know about the announcement.

We thank the FOSS4G 2022 team for their support and for giving an
opportunity to the students to showcase their work to the global open
source geospatial community. :)

Kind regards,
OSGeo GSoC Administration Team

[OSGeo-Discuss] [GSoC 2022 - Call for Contributors] Announcing GSoC 2022 with OSGeo | Instructions and What's New with 2022!

2022-01-31 Thread Rajat Shinde via Discuss
Dear All,

Wishing you a happy New Year and hope you are doing well.

(Disclaimer: It's a long email so please read patiently.)

After the successful wrap-up of GSoC 2021, with all the 12 projects
successfully completed and the contributors presenting their work in FOSS4G
2021, we are ready for GSoC 2022 [1] with OSGeo.

*If you are a contributor interested in contributing to the geospatial open
source with OSGeo as an umbrella organization, then this is high-time to
connect with the projects of your interest and interact with the project
community.*

GSoC 2022 comes with new structural changes, so we recommend you to follow
the official announcement (link 3 below) in detail. Citing below the
significant changes for quick reference-

1. Starting in 2022, the *program will be open to all newcomers of open
source that are 18 years and older*, no longer focusing solely on
university students. With folks around the world changing careers,
returning to the workforce, learning on their own (outside of academic
programs) we see an opportunity to reach a plethora of excited individuals
who want to learn more about open source and be a part of our amazing GSoC
communities.

2. GSoC Contributors will also be able to *choose from multiple size
projects ~175 hour (medium) and 350 hour (large)*. We understand not
everyone can spend 30 hours a week on a coding project for 12 weeks but
they would like to be a part of these communities with the help of mentors.

3. We are building increased *flexibility around the timing of projects* -
there is an option to extend the standard 12 week coding time frame to a
maximum of 22 weeks. This is to allow for folks who may realize that
spreading the work over say, 16 weeks, is a more realistic goal with their
current life situation. Or for contributors who have life happen in the
middle of the program and they can’t work on their projects for a few
weeks, but they can come back to it after a month to finish it. Hopefully
this makes it easier for GSoC Contributors and mentors to be able to
navigate together when obstacles occur and the GSoC Contributor can
successfully complete their project.

Also, we strongly suggest to go through following links for getting overall
understanding of the program-

1. GSoC 2022 Timeline -
https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/timeline
2. GSoC Contributors/Student guide -
https://google.github.io/gsocguides/student/
3. Official Announcement of GSoC 2022 on Google Open source Blog -
https://opensource.googleblog.com/2021/11/expanding-google-summer-of-code-in-2022.html
4. OSGeo Project Ideas for GSoC 2022 -
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code_2022_Ideas (Keep checking
this frequently)
5. Link to FOSS4G 2021 video presentation explaining the entire process for
contributing to OSGeo with GSoC - https://youtu.be/Flr1tcrcAvE

Please note that this is a heads-up for the contributors to get started
with the interaction, and the official process will commence post OSGeo's
*acceptance* (not application) as an organization to the GSoC (Org.
application starts - Feb 7th, 2022; List of accepted mentoring
organizations published - March 7th, 2022).

Please feel free to reach us at gsoc-admin (AT) osgeo (DOT) org for further
queries and we excitingly look forward to welcoming you to our amazing
OSGeo community.

(PS- A call for project proposals to the OSGeo projects, community projects
and guest projects with instructions on preparing the project ideas page
shall be announced soon.)

Stay safe!
Kind regards,
OSGeo GSoC Administration Team

[OSGeo-Discuss] GSoC 2021: OSGeo Accepted as Mentor Organization!

2021-03-09 Thread Rajat Shinde
Dear All,

We are delighted to share that OSGeo has been accepted as one of the
mentoring organizations for the Google Summer of Code 2021. This will be
our 15th year participating as a mentoring organization starting 2007
onwards (Congratulations to all of us, this is indeed a great achievement).

The list of accepted organizations is at [0].
Our OSGeo GSoC 2021 application is available at [1].

Please note the Student Application Period opens *March 29 - April 13,
2021, 18:00 UTC*.
Students interested in participating with OSGeo are recommended to start
discussing the application ideas [2] with the OSGeo mentoring projects.
They shall register and submit their applications beginning March 29 till
April 13, 2021. All proposals must be submitted before the deadline of
April 13, 2021, 18:00 UTC.

We still have time for more projects to participate with ideas [2].
It is an amazing opportunity to:

   - Add functionality to your projects.
   - Attract more contributors participating in the projects; sometimes
   they become long-term contributors. :)

If you wish to participate, please send your project ideas list to us at
the gsoc-admin (AT) osgeo (DOT) org.
OSGeo projects, Incubating projects, and Community projects are welcome.

Stay tuned for further instructions on the next steps, and let us be
prepared for another geospatial GSoC with OSGeo!

Yours,
OSGeo GSoC Admins Team

[OSGeo-Discuss] [OSGeo @ GSoC 2021] Call for Projects to Prepare Project Ideas Page for Google Summer of Code 2021

2021-01-28 Thread Rajat Shinde
Dear All,

Greetings!

It is the time of the year to start preparing for the OSGeo's participation
with the Google Summer of Code 2021 [1] and we need your help for the same.
With a 100% success for all the GSoC 2020 student projects [2], we are
highly excited and motivated to invite the OSGeo projects (Projects,
Incubation projects, Guest Projects) to begin compiling the project ideas
for GSoC 2021.

In order to participate in proposing ideas as a project under OSGeo
umbrella organisation, you just need to send us (admins: ) the URL for your project's GSoC ideas Wiki page. If you are
participating for the first time, then you may visit [3] [4] for reference.

Please remember that every idea should indicate:

• A title
• A description
• 2 Mentors' Details
• A test for the students to submit to your evaluation. The test aims
at evaluating if the student is capable for the project, so please design
the test having in mind the basic skills required to complete the project.

The organisation application period starts Jan 30, 2021 and will be open
till Feb 20, 2021. So, we expect all the URLs by Feb 10, 2021. Here is the
complete GSoC 2021 timeline [5].

*Note:* GSoC 2021 comes with some new changes in the program. We sincerely
request to go through the announcement mentioning new changes [6].

Thanks and please forward the information to your respective projects
mailing list!

Kind regards,
Rahul and Rajat

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Can someone test a program with point clouds?

2020-04-18 Thread Rajat Shinde
-- Resending it again with reduced size, please ignore if received twice. --

Thanks for the detailed instructions.
Initially, I tried with a huge point cloud scene but it was getting
difficult to visualize so then I sampled a small subset out of it. The
subset is having a valley sort of and hence it was expected to produce
steep triangles. All the experimental results are in the attached zip file.
The experiments were done for Release 0.3.3
<https://github.com/phma/perfecttin/releases/tag/0.3.3>, 0.3.6
<https://github.com/phma/perfecttin/releases/tag/0.3.6> and 0.4.0rc1
(master).

As mentioned, the spikes are visible in 0.3.3 but it gets pretty smooth and
smaller in 0.3.6 and 0.4.0rc1. Please check it. I have also added some
screenshots for visual comparison.

Not sure about the attachment size on the mailing list, so the results can
also be accessed here
<https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1D9fAAooisQCO5BH_Ir12pyLe84Cqmy0z?usp=sharing>
.

I hope of not missing out on anything. Please let me know if I did.
I would love to see Dr Steer's reply; he is really point cloud heavy and I
have been following his articles lately. :)

Kind regards,
Rajat

Hi Pierre,

I would be very happy to do it. My PhD thesis involves LiDAR Point Cloud
processing and these days I am fully covered up with LAS/LAZ files. Though,
I have not used PerfectTIN till now, but I can see the earlier releases
available at https://github.com/OSGeo/perfecttin/releases.

Please suggest me on how to proceed.

[OSGeo-Discuss] GSoC 2020: Adjustments to the Timeline and Around 1 week remaining for Student Application Period

2020-03-24 Thread Rajat Shinde
Dear All,

We hope that you all are healthy and safe and taking good care of dear
ones.
Due to COVID-19 pandemic, there has been some adjustments done in the GSoC
2020 timeline by the Google OSPO team.

Yes, GSoC 2020 is still happening with the following significant
adjustments to the timeline:

1. 3 weeks to review student proposals (updated from 2 weeks)

   - Adjusted duration for Student proposal review is now *March 31-April
   20.*

2. Extended Community Bonding period to 4 weeks (updated from 3 weeks)

   - The official coding period starts *June 1. *The Community Bonding
Period will be from *May 4-31. *This will allow enhanced mentor-student
interaction and will help the student in getting familiar with the project
   community.

Please note that there is no change in the Student Application Period
(which has already started on March 16). The deadline for submitting the
final project proposals by the Students is unchanged i.e. *March 31 1800
UTC*. The updated timeline is available at [1].

We have already started receiving student proposals for feedback and
comments and are expecting more responses in the coming days. Thanks to the
students for sharing their proposals.

@Students: It is high time for start preparing your draft proposals and
sharing it with the community for feedback and comments. Don't forget to
update adjustments in the timeline if you have already prepared the draft
proposal. The final proposal should be submitted after logging into the
GSoC Dashboard. Please take a moment to get well-versed with the Dashboard
to avoid last minute hassle.

Finally, nothing is more important than health and safety of human life.
Please continue taking good care of yourself and loved ones.

Stay safe and keep sanitizing your keyboard!

With kind regards,
Your OSGeo GSoC Admins

[OSGeo-Discuss] GSoC 2020: Students Application Period Begins Today (March 16, 2020 18:00 UTC)

2020-03-16 Thread Rajat Shinde
Dear All,

The student application period for GSoC 2020 begins today i.e. March 16,
2020 18:00 UTC. The application deadline is March 31 18:00 UTC. Please
refer [1] for timeline.

*@Prospective Students:*
It is a high time to refer to OSGeo Ideas page [2] and student
recommendations, particularly application instructions [3]. It is
recommended to start preparing your draft of the proposal and share it on
the OSGeo discuss and OSGeo SoC mailing list at the earliest to receive
feedback and comments. Remember to provide proper sharing access to the
document so that comments could be added to the proposal.
Please don't wait till the last moment as it becomes very difficult to
provide feedback for all proposals during the last period. The final
proposal needs to be submitted from the GSoC Dashboard.

*@Mentors:*
There is still time to subscribe as a co-mentor. It is must to have at
least 2 mentors for every project idea otherwise the proposal will be
discarded irrespective of the quality of the proposal (Due to COVID-19
outbreak, it is also possible to have 3 mentors for projects so that one of
the mentors is always available for the discussions). Please remember that
the GSoC mentors must be of age 18 years or more following the new change
introduced in GSoC 2020 program. If you have not signed for becoming a
mentor or have not received the invitation yet then please fill in the form
[4].

Looking forward to a great time ahead.

*Please forward this email to your project communities*.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] GSoC 2020 need new Lead Admin to take over

2020-01-27 Thread Rajat Shinde
Dear OSGeo Community Members and OSGeo GSoC Admins,

Greetings!

Sincere thanks to all the Admins for their constant help and support
throughout the past years in organizing the Summer of Code. For me, GSoC
plays a very important part of my career and I feel it would be same for a
lot of us.

Having mentioned that, I personally believe that it would be sad if the
GSoC is not continued. I feel that this also calls for an opportunity to
people like me who can jump into new shoes under the guidance of ex-Admins
to carry forward the continous open-source contribution in the geospatial
domain under the umbrella of the OSGeo.

So, I would be honored to be a part of the GSoC Admin team. It would be a
great learning experience for me and a progressive step moving ahead in my
life. In the past, I have completed GSoC 2017 as a student under the OSGeo
(MapMint project). I also got an amazing opportunity to co-mentor the
projects for MapMint in 2018 and 2019. Unfortunately, I missed out the
opportunity to be a part of the OSGeo representative committee for the GSoC
Mentor Summit in 2019 due to visa issues. Currently, I am mentoring for the
OSGeo Google Code-in.

Before taking this step, I wanted to be sure that I would be able to carry
forward this responsibility and hence, I tried to do a bit of research on
the basis of conversations stored in the Archives. Please be assured that I
am making a well thought decision, and my commitment in this new endeavour
is 100%.

Thanks!

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] GSoC 2019 Results!

2019-09-04 Thread Rajat Shinde
It is indeed great news.
Congratulations to all the students and the mentors. :)
It could not have been possible without the help and support of our superb
OSGeo GSoC Admins.

I am also thankful to the community for giving me the opportunity to
represent OSGeo at the GSoC Mentor Summit 2019. I am looking forward to a
great experience at the summit.

Thanks to all for the great Summer of Code.
Kind regards,
Rajat
