Tore,

Dean is referring to the Windows Event Viewer. If slimserver crashes, you will
get a message in there. to find this, click on the start menu

then
start->settings->control panel
double-click Administration Tools
then double click Event Viewer

look in the 'application log'

[slim] Lost contact to Slimserver for v.6.1

2005-04-21 Thread Tore Johnsson
Hi Dean
Is application log only in version 6.xxx or will it be even in version
5.4.1.
In that case where do I find it in the Slimserver 5.4.1. and version 6.?

I have earlier tried http://serverip:9000/log.txt but as I said when
Slimserver was crashed there were no log.
Kind regards
Tore Johnsson

Hi Tore,

Ok, I didn't realize that SlimServer was actually crashing.

There should be a logged event in your Event Viewer under the
Application log that would have details which would probably explain
the issue.

[slim] Help: Volume Problem with Sync

2005-04-21 Thread AV_Guy

When I sync my SB1 to SoftSqueeze the volume on the SB1 jumps around
between tracks. It doesn't do it every track but it often jumps both
up and down at the track change. This is happening despite having the
volume sync feature turned off.

I'm running the latest firmware (V40), SlimServer 6.0.1 and SoftSqueeze
2.0b5.

I've also noted it doesn't seem to sync Internet Radio. I assume that
might be normal?

[slim] Help!!

2005-04-21 Thread Chris Glushko
Help! I'm going nuts!!!

So I figured out that Slimserver 6 ignores protected
AAC files which accounts for 16 of the 17 additional
tracks that iTunes shows in my music library.
However, I cannot figure out the last track that is
missing.

Is there anything that would make Slimserver not count
a track that is in iTunes besides it being a protected
AAC?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks-

[slim] ITunes Confusion

2005-04-21 Thread Patrick Dixon

What does the use iTunes library and the various settings in the base
slimserver actually do? Is it different to the iTunes update plugin?
Does one depend on the other?

I'm trying to use iTunes playlists with slimserver, and I can't see any
of them in browse playlists. I've set the iTunes xml file location and
the iTunes Music directory (which is outside the normal slimserver
path) correctly (I think). I haven't installed the plugin.

I have slimserver V6.0.1 branch running on FC3, iTunes on XP.

I'm obviously doing something wrong - can someone point me in the right
direction please?

it seems that this is AlienBBC related. The default value for Web page cache
age is 30 (according to the description), but the value isn't being loaded to
the form (probably becuase the default value isn't being written to the pref on
startup). When you submit teh musicmagic change, this will also try to submit
the blank value in teh Web Page cache age prefs. Blank is not a valid value
for this pref. As a workaround, enter 30 and click change. Then you wont have

you will need a user key for musicmagic, in order to enable the API server in
musicmagic. Slimserver communicates with that server, and will uncheck the
musicmagic plugin as long as that communication fails.

This depends on the version of Java you are using. In Java 1.5 open the

Any chance of implementing a TRUE real-time browse of the music folder
tree? I'm realizing that this is how I generally find and play music
anyway and SlimServer, with its semi-broken cataloging of tracks just
gets in the way. It seems to use some odd combination of tags and
directories rather than just directories. I see a number of directory
trees being flattened at some point in the tree. For instance, instead
of seeing a dozen directories (albums) under D:\Music\Ultra-Lounge\ I
get 118 mixed up tracks when I browse to that directory.

It might also be nice if it could break out of the "Music" folder and
permit browsing of all drives and directories. For instance, if I tell
SlimServer my music is at D:\Music, then it means I can't play a tune
through the Squeezebox from E:\Rips until it's moved into the music
folder. It just strikes me as oddly inflexible when directory browsing
would be so simple to do.

I'd even go so far as to suggest that it would be a very welcome option
to have the ability to completely turn off the database/caching of
tracks by SlimServer and give the user the ability to _only_ browse
through directories (once again - actual directories and files, rather
than SS's best-guess interpretation). This would enormously simplify
both the interface and the work that SlimServer needs to do.

How does one make a surround wav? For example, I'd like to rip some audio
off a DVD or two and play it (in surround sound) via the SB. Please advise
exactly how one can do this.

[slim] New SB2 Surprise

2005-04-21 Thread slim

Well my SB2 arrived today and I
must say it lives up to the expectations.
Installation was flawless.
Wireless network recognition: no problem at all
My favourite plugins (RSS and
Biography) also working.

'Spousal Consent' raised about
100% upon seeing the Analog VU-meter screensaver.

But the biggest surprise of all
was the DTS-Surround.WAV streaming through the wireless connection with a full
100% buffer and not a single glitch!

Thanks again for
this!

Nope, why should there be? I understand full UTF-8 support (including
display of Chinese / Japanese tags on the player) was in the pipeline.
I was just wondering if there was any news on that.
The rest was just random musings on how to tide us over those "??" tracks :)

Sorry this took me a million years ... I haven't been using
softsqueeze in a while and just forgot. FWIW, I still get dropouts
with the version included in 6.1-trunk. Console "log" (last few lines
copypasted) is for most recent sourceforge .zip version, though. In
the meantime I've discovered how to enable a buffer %age on my
physical sb2 - it only goes below 100% at song changes.

> Do the dropouts happen at the same time '[Full GC ...]' is displayed [...]

No.

When a dropout occurred I switched to the player ASAP and hit pause,
then copied as many lines from the console window as were still
visible. Thus the dropout should be close to the end of the file - I
couldn't see anything special though.

All I was suggesting is that the difference in DAC's could be a major
part of the picture. His daughter could hear a difference and that is
one major component that could help explain the difference.

I never said directly that the SB2 was inherently superior (in fact
going out of my way to give the listener in question the benefit of
the doubt). I may have inferred that by referencing a hypothetical
"$0.99 DAC" but in my case I think it was obvious that $0.99 DAC is
simply code for generic $<50 CD player DAC. If this CD player were
something of particularly high quality then I suspect the OP would
have mentioned that.

Personally I can't tell the difference between any of them. I think
my SliMP3 playing MP3's sounds great.

[slim] Errors with recent 6.1 nightlies

2005-04-21 Thread Jeff Moore
(All on Mac OS 10.3.9)

I had the 20-April 6.1 nightly installed, and when I tried to fire up an
MP3 stream (http://wnycfm.streamguys.com) from an iTunes playlist, the
server fell over with this message:

Can't call method "songBytes" on an undefined value at
/Library/PreferencePanes/SlimServer.prefPane/Contents/server/Slim/Player/Protocols/HTTP.pm
 line 504.

I was able to reproduce it twice, the second time right after startup.

FYI, a non-fatal message in the same log:

'`plugins/Podcast/myPodcasts2' is not the same as
'`plugins/Podcast/myPodcasts' at
/Library/PreferencePanes/SlimServer.prefPane/Contents/server/Slim/Web/HTTP.pm
line 1688

I loaded up the 21-April 6.1 nightly and tried to make the server fall
over again. The server stayed up, maybe because the problem got fixed
yesterday or maybe because I wasn't able to follow just the same path
through the playlists. The only error I now see is:

Use of uninitialized value in string ne at
/Library/PreferencePanes/SlimServer.prefPane/Contents/server/Slim/Web/Pages.pm
line 945.
Use of uninitialized value in string ne at

...when navigating to the formerly-fatal stream via the web interface.

Okay, so this doesn't need to get out of hand. In fact, I did check the DAC
cost and it was $8. But, right, the one in the SB2 is definitely good.

Did we ever establish which CD player is being used for comparison? Maybe
the DAC isn't $.99 (as if that really matters anyway).

In my comparisons, the SB2 analog out isn't as good as a high end CD
player's analog out. However, the digital out is definitely comparable.
Also true is the idea that different isn't necessarily better. My ears,
however, tell me the SB2's digital out to my receiver's DAC has more open
sound and more high end detail. Also, when playing a HDCD (turned to FLAC)
my receiver knows it's a 20bit signal. When I play the same FLAC through
SB2's DAC the difference is very pronounced.

Phillip

Re: [slim] Re: Unwanted 'synchronisation'

2005-04-21 Thread Vidur Apparao
The behavior you describe is consistent with my speculation of what
might be happening. When SlimServer completes streaming a track to the
SB2, it should close the streaming socket for that track. This is an
indication that there is no more data for that stream (the data itself
does not contain an end-of-stream marker). If, and only if, the
streaming socket has been closed, the device sends a decoder underrun
message when it finishes decoding the audio - this can be several
seconds to minutes after the socket has been closed, depending on how
much audio fits into the SB2's input audio buffer. The decoder underrun
message is an indicator to SlimServer that it should start streaming the
next track.

I'm speculating that the server isn't closing the streaming socket for
some reason, resulting in a severely delayed decoder underrun message.
The patch with the debug output hopefully will help me figure out why.

To answer a couple of your points:
These players were synched once, when I first got the SB2 maybe a
couple of weeks ago. It didn't work quite how I liked (when synched the
players introduced short gaps between tracks which weren't there if not
synched) so I disabled it after like 20 mins. The server has been
upgraded at least twice and bounced many times since then.
To clarify a little about what happens when the SB2 stalls - as it's
approaching the end of the track everything is normal. Then, roughly 7
or 8 seconds before the end, the display locks up but the music still
plays to the end of the track. The display remains stuck until it wakes
back up again when the SB1 changes track. If I use the remote while it's
locked I can skip to the next track manually and it works fine. But it
will lock up again at the next transition.
The network is wireless, but with good signal strength and the bitrate
is ~1mbps (FLAC).
I should also point out that the SB1 playback never has any problems,
and if the SB1 isn't playing, neither does the SB2. This only occurs
when both players are playing at once.

Even if we settled on $5 (probably low) -- that's still over five
times the cost of a $0.99 DAC. There's lots of room for improvement
there.

Is it possible she just prefers the sound of the $0.99 DAC in your CD
player over the high-end DAC in the SB2? :-)

In all seriousness, there will always be differences unless both
sources are supplying the same digital signal to the receiver.
Because the CD player has a different DAC with different
characteristics those differences are just the way it will be.

Can your daughter explain which sounds *better* to her and why?
That's asking a lot for a 13-yr old, but she may have a very fine
acoustical sense at that age particularly if she hasn't blown her ears

Re: [slim] What can I do to get the best sound?

2005-04-21 Thread Mike Hartley
Andrew,
Different vs Better is a tough one. Just because your daughter can tell the
difference between the two doesn't tell you which is producing the best
sound fidelity to the original lossless source.

I'm not being critical here. I'm just pointing out that sound preference is
a VERY subjective thing. I have seen blind listening tests where people
graded actual bit-perfect recordings LOWER than the same recording in a
lossy format. One explanation the reviewer came up with is that possibly
you could here imperfections is the master that were masked by the lossy
compression.

If you have a good receiver with digital inputs and a good DAC, try running
each device seperately on the digital connection and see how they sound.
They should sound identical to each other. One thing I neglected to ask you
is what type of CD player are you using? Do you know what type of DAC chip
it is using?

I am using analog inputs, and both devices go to the same receiver. The
sb2 was defaulted to a lower volume, which I changed.. My receiver must
be sensative to this. The sb2 sounds much closer to the cd now, though
my 13 year old daughter still has no problem picking out the cd in blind

In addition to Mike's questions, are the output levels the same for
the CD player and SB2? SB2 may default to 20/40 (50% volume) which
apparently often results in perceived lower quality when compared

Connecting to them via USB can be a complete bugger. I bought my wife
one a week ago and haven't managed to get it working via USB2 yet - you
just get errors saying something like "the connection failed for some
reason". Searching various forums shows that the Karma seems to be
extremely temperamental about which USB configurations it will work
with. But hey, it's not as if we wanted to put files on our 20Gb MP3
player... ;-)

PS USB1 does work for us, and you can also use Ethernet to put files
on the device, but that's not really the point.

Re: [slim] Re: Unwanted 'synchronisation'

2005-04-21 Thread Vidur Apparao
The debug log definitely shows that the SB2 seems stalled from sometime
after 22:40:16 till 22:46:39. The former time is when we finish
streaming the FLAC track to the player, though it may be many seconds
before the SB2 actually finishes playing the track. The latter time is
when SlimServer receives a decoder underrun event from the SB2, implying
that the input buffer of the device is empty and it's ready for the next
track. Again, there should be a delta between the first time and the
point where we get the decoder underrun event - this represents the
audio in the SB2's input buffer which can be several seconds to minutes
long, depending on the bitrate of the audio and the bandwidth of the
network. However, that delta definitely shouldn't be over 6 minutes.

A question - were these two players synchronized and then unsynchronized
anytime prior to grabbing the debug log? I've attached a small source
code patch that provides a bit more debug output. If you need help
applying the patch, feel free to contact me off-list at vidur | at |
slimdevices.com.

Greg, the log you posted to bug 1289 isn't as clear about what's going
on. If you're able to recreate with the attached patch, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks for your help!

they use an Hitachi hard drive, which seems to have a known problem with the
read arm getting stuck to the platter. On some units, the drive will lock up
on occasion and requires a reset by paper clip, or even hitting it hard. I've
only run into the problem twice in 4 months of owning it, and one of those
times did actually fix itself (and showed a message about a corrupt file, so
I'm not sure it was really the same problem). Definitely not a device you want

In addition to Mike's questions, are the output levels the same for
the CD player and SB2? SB2 may default to 20/40 (50% volume) which
apparently often results in perceived lower quality when compared
directly to a higher level source. Raise the SB2 device volume to
100% before doing listening tests, use the receiver volume control to

Re: [slim] My SB2 arrived yesterday !

This sounds promising - I am hoping that using a battery power supply
for the SB2 will further improve the sound quality so I do not have to
buy an external DAC. My standards are high so maybe I'm overly
optimistic but the DAC is a PCM1730 and they are using separate
crystals for 44.1 and 48 sampling rates along with a 64meg buffer.

Andrew,
A couple of questions come to mind:

1. Are the SB and the CD player hooked to the same receiver?
2. If so, what type of conneciton are you using (analog or digital/Optical
or Coax) for the CD Player?
3. What type of connection (analog or digital/Optical Co-ax)) are you using
for the SB?

It is really up to you.
I do it 100% reversed from you.
genre/artist/album/
with each track separate in the directory with names like
08 - Chestnut Mare

Just a note, the tagging, which are fields like artist, song title,
label, genre, etc. are completely separate from the physical
layout of the wav/flac/mp3 files on your disks.
There is no requirement that the physical disk layout
have anything to do with the metadata tags

Yes Max it will preserve file structures. I have my lossless files
stored in a directory structure, i.e., Artist\Album\Songs and by

I believe this product lets you select the FLAC files you want to send
to your MP3 player and then will do the conversion on the fly and
convert them to MP3 for your player. This allows you to not have to
mirror your FLACs as mp3s. A downside of this is that it is windows

RE: FW: [slim] Re: Problems/Frustration with Softsqueeze/SSH

2005-04-21 Thread tdmcgurk
Tom,

I saw that the other day. It looks very exciting.

Imagine, with just a little interface work we'll be at the point where a
laptop-type device will be *really* useful in automobiles. It could replace
or greatly enhance dedicated entertainment systems (wouldn't it be great to
be able to access your entire collection over a broadband connection?) and
GPS/Nav systems (with the added benefit of having them up-to-date,
interactive and made more useful by the addition of real-time traffic data.)
Heck, shouldn't there be a system whereby one can quickly send out a notice
of an accident or a traffic slowdown that will instantly pop up on the
moving maps of other similarly-equipped drivers? Or perhaps one could
automatically upload telemetry data that'd be aggregated and processed to
generate maps that display traffic speed for everyone, and that data would
be used to compute course changes if more efficient routes were available?
The possibilities are endless, and boggle the mind.

W/r/t the how-to, I'd suggest that three things be addressed in a
step-by-step manner.

1) Finding, downloading, installing and setting up the SSH server on an XP
system. There's a lot of command-line stuff that's not very clear to your
typical GUI-user. A small example - the "-l" flag sure looks like "- ONE".
If you're not messing with this stuff every day, that little issue could
shut you down completely. Also, I believe that the accounts/password
transfer examples are written for an NT system - the steps don't line up
exactly for XP.
2) Configuring a (typical) firewall for access. You witnessed my struggles
here, which could be avoided by a simple picture (or clear examples like
"put 22 in the box for forwarding port".) Typical users would even struggle
to determine the IP address of the machine running the slimserver - it might
help to lay out a way to find that information easily (is that obtainable in
some way other than resetting a SB and walking through the setup manually?)
3) Configuring softsqueeze to access the slimserver. A screenshot would be
nice, but even a box-by-box walkthrough would be helpful.

The biggest problem from my perspective was that every resource I found for
setting up SSH and/or the softsqueeze assumed that one had a strong working
knowledge of UNIX, and therefore skipped over, or gave very cursory
treatment to, steps that would be obvious to someone with that background.

As always, just my $.02.

Best,
Tom

RE: FW: [slim] Re: Problems/Frustration with Softsqueeze/SSH

2005-04-21 Thread tdmcgurk
Tom,

Thanks for your help. I managed to get it working - I think the final key
was forwarding to port 22 of the SSH server.

My system is using EVDO (wireless broadband) on a laptop, which enables me
to access my music collection almost anywhere within my hometown (and quite
a few other towns too). I'm excited about the ability to stream music
anywere (like my car, for instance). Sound quality seems great so far.

you up and running. They were posted with the release of SoftSqueeze 1.0,
not that much has changed in the SSH tunneling feature of SoftSqueeze2 but

You need to set you router/firewall to forward Port 22 to the local network
IP address of of your XP box running SSH and Slimserver. You don't need to
forward any other ports through the firewall. The point of SSH tunneling
is that all traffic and ports needed are tunneled through the single open
and secure port.

It should be. It is just a generic text file that hold all the settings
that SSH uses when it starts up.

When you enter the IP address of the SSH Server, make sure that you are
using the IP address assigned to your WAN/Router by your ISP, not the IP
address of the XP box on your local network.

Let me know if any of that was helpful. If not, don't worry we'll get it.
Lots of people use this feature everyday so it is just a matter of trouble
shooting your setup and getting you enjoying your music collection from
anywhere with an internet connection.

How did you create the mirror? There's a few of us trying to do this
sort of thing at the moment.

*

Download and install dBpowerAmp Music Converter at:

http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

Use the program's file selector to choose all of your flac files and
let the program convert them en masse to a separate folder or drive.

I have lossless files on a USB external drive with mp3 files mirrored
on my main drive.

Here at Meridian, we use a VFD in our G Series products, but it has
much coarser dots and we don't get 'grayscale' out of it. Actually, I'd

How much of this is simply due to the difference between a 10Mb/s and
100Mb/s wired connection I don't know, but the SB2 just seems overall
faster, more responsive and more solid.
SB2 has a much bigger buffer memory which will continue playing for a
while even if the server crashes. This was a little confusing, when it
happened for the first time. But this also helps playing, while some
intensive or slow tasks are blocking the server.

Audio quality is great (coax S/PDIF) and I /love/ the display! We

I decided that it was worth it to just mirror my FLAC files in mp3.
The entire mp3 mirror at --preset standard takes up less that 1/4 the
space of the FLAC library. Then I don't have to go through any
particular gyrations to quickly load a few dozen odd mp3s onto a
portable player as I'm running out the door.

[slim] My SB2 arrived yesterday !

2005-04-21 Thread dominique . roland

First of all, I would like to congratulate Slim Devices team for their
excellent work, both for the design and for the the service's
qualities.

- First good impression was to discover the quality of the black case.
I ordered a platinium one and decided to switch for the black one,
further to Slim's proposal. I am really impressed by the feeling of
quality given by this low cost device!

- Second good impression was the setup of the system. 10 minutes and
the slimbox was working on my wifi network!

- Third good impression was the sound quality. My Classe DAC1 decided
to die two weeks ago and I had to connect the SB2 to my Bel Canto Evo2i
using the analog outputs and I got here a big surprise. The sound's
quality is more than acceptable! it is pretty good!

I will now do my best to promote this excellent product in my country.
