Yes - you'll need to restart, then wipe and rescan. It's imperative
that the LC_CTYPE matches the file encoding of that when the CDs were
originally ripped. Thus, if you originally ripped and had no
LC_CTYPE, that may have defaulted to en_US.ISO-8859-1. Setting your
LC_CTYPE to en_US.utf8 won't be able to read those files then!

ahhh, all my files are ripped on my windoze system. all access to/from
slimserver via a samba share with "character set = ISO8859-1" so maybe
it's best to stick with that charset for now...

If I set the variables accordingly it should work with ISO8859-1, right?

Worked fine before I moved to the v6 branch...

Thanks guys for your kind words! But the real kudos go to Andrew for

[slim] SB2 Pause/Resume

2005-07-18 Thread bossanova808

Hi

Whenever I pause during play, and leave it paused for longer than a
minute or so, if I then un-pause the music will play to the end of that
song and then stop. I have to hit skip for it to move to the next song
on the playlist.

This is repeatable, and I presume it is a bug, but I thought I'd just
check if it was some sort of expected behaviour?

I'm using slimserver 6.0.2, win xp sp2, squeezebox 2 wireless (happens
when wired as well as I recall).

Cheers for any help

Question: Who wants a learning SB remote?

- I'd buy one, but no more than $20

- I'd buy one, but no more than $100
- Nope, not interested at all
- Future versions of the SB should have this as standard

Happy with my Harmony. I have a number of devices which came with
learning remotes (such as my cable box, dvd player, etc). All of them
are significantly lacking in one way or another, and thus not truly
universal. The Harmony is the only one I've found which is both
universal and usable (can't get on with the Pronto at all).

If my SB2 remote could turn on my receiver and change the input selector
on it, I could run everything from just the one remote and I'd be a
happy man. Of course, I could just buy a universal remote and train it,
but I like the simple & dedicated layout on the SB2 remote.
Who else is out there that would like to be able to buy (as an optional

I personally have no interest in another remote, but a file with clean
codes for use on the Philips Pronto would be most welcome.

As Dean pointed out, IR blasting in coming, which will make the SB2
itself a universal remote.

[slim] SlimServer on ReadyNAS600

2005-07-18 Thread WSLam

Infrant released a new firmware for their ReadyNAS600 NAS last week.
Along with the upgrade is an optional component users can upload to the
ReadyNAS. SlimServer 6.02!

Finally, a VERY easy way to run SlimServer in a NAS without any
hacking.

The process is very simple. Upgrade your firmware as usual, then
download the additional SlimServer component. Upload SlimServer like
the firmware. The ReadyNAS needs to reboot twice (after firmware
upgrade, then SlimServer).

Upon the second bootup, SlimServer will be up and running! The whole
process took me less then 10 mins.

http://www.infrant.com/support.htm#download

It's just 6.02 as usual! Seems to work very well.

My only gripe now is to find a way to truly silence the ReadyNAS. Any
idea?

This surely is a great way to run SlimServer. JAVA takes up too much
resources on Windows desktop imo. I much prefer to run SlimServer on
another computer other then the one I use day to day...

[slim] An alternative to SB's headphone output -- the PA2V2

2005-07-18 Thread ephemere

In the following thread, I documented significant audible RF
interference on SB's headphone output. Slim Devices checked and
verified this problem.

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=15102

I'm assuming this problem isn't going to be fixed anytime soon. In the
meantime, I'd like to find a way to use headphones with the SB. This is
my second SB, and I plan to use it only for semi-portable headphone
listening around the house. (My first SB is permanently connected to
my home rig via its digital outs.) The only solution seems to be to
use an external headphone amp fed by the SB's line outs. (Note to
self: test the line outs to make sure they're clean.)

So over the weekend I did some research to find a headphone amp with
the following qualities:

- small and light enough to velcro to the SB
- runs on batteries (don't want an extra power cord as I move the SB
from room to room)
- has a built-in battery recharger
- runs for a long time on one charge
- cost isn't out of line with the cost of the SB itself

I could only find one device that satisfies all of these criteria.
It's called the Pocket Amp 2 - Version 2, or PA2V2 for short. It's a
tiny handmade headphone amp that is claimed to run for 100 hours on a
single charge of 2 AA NiMH batteries. It's 2.6 x 2.6 x 1.1 inches, so
it should fit nicely on the flat part of the SB. It also has good
reviews from http://www.head-fi.org. It costs $60.

I'm ordering the PA2V2 today. When I receive it and try it out, I'll
post again with the results. Hopefully, this will happen before my
30-day trial period expires.

their blazingly responsive turnaround in finding and committing to
implement a solution. This attention to detail is well above and
beyond the strict call of duty.

When I bought my first SB1 a while back, one of the reasons I picked it

I don't think that a few extra buttons would do justice to controlling

I use a Pronto - and its infinately customisable and now replaces my 7

[slim] Re: RF interference in SB2's headphone output

2005-07-18 Thread Andrew L . Weekes

-Just another example of why I love the folks at Slim Devices.-

Agreed! I've said it before, but I'll say it again, the guys at Slim
Devices are refreshingly open, it's great stuff.

For a techy aside to the problem, it's very common for electronics to
demodulate RF signals. You cannot hear the RF (even as an 'audiophile'
I wouldn't argue that!) but what you are hearing is the effect of the
electronics turning into an RF detector (i.e. radio receiver).

It only really happens in junction devices, so bipolar transistors are
worse in this respect than FET's, which have no actual rectifying (i.e.
diode) junctions. For that reason FET-input amps are much better in RF
environments than bipolar parts. Heavily degenerated bipolar parts
perform better (in this respect) too.

With AM transmissions you can actually demodulate the audio content (or
data content) quite readily, which is why AM CB radios, or amateur radio
/ PMR transmissions are more prone to obvious audio breakthrough.
Because the method for decoding FM transmissions is different, you
often just get the effect of the carrier affecting the item, since the
data or audio content is harder to demodulate.

Low level (low current) stages and high impedance areas of a circuit
are most prone to this problem (e.g. phono stages, high impedance
op-amp inputs etc.), and the problen can manifest itself as direct
effects, or the effect of the stage being driven into non-linearity by
the RF.

What I suspect, based on experience (but haven't analysed in detail
yet) was happening here is the headphone amp cable was acting as a
reasonable antenna and the RF was getting back into the headphone amp
chip, which then gives it a direct path back to the input stage (via
the chip's feedback loop).

Good to see it fixed though and I'm happy to be of assistance!

Andy.

If you want to do it yourself the parts are about $0.02 each (we can

I have two computers that house music, and each has slimserver

Often, I will create a playlist (usually with foobar2k) and save it as

If save that file to my playlist dir on my other pc, the playlist will

Is there another way/format that I could adopt that would look for the

[slim] Re: RF interference in SB2's headphone output

2005-07-18 Thread seanadams

I have a solution for this now (thanks to Andrew Weekes for the
pointers).

It looks like the signal is actually being picked up by the headphone
cable (not internally). It goes into the 1/8" jack and then gets
amplified back out by the headphone amp. The behavior seems different
depending on the type of phones - Sennheiser HD 600 phones only exhibit
the problem if the cable is actually wrapped around the antenna, whereas
Sony MDR-7506 picks up the signal easily. YMMV.

Anyway, the fix is pretty simple but it does require soldering: attach
two 33pF caps to ground on the headphone jack - make sure to keep the
leads as short as possible - surface mount caps are best. This
eliminates the problem for my test case, irrespective of antenna
arrangement etc.

If you're comfortable doing this yourself, I've posted some
step-by-step instructions here:

http://www.seanadams.com/sb2_headphone/

Otherwise please contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you want to have
the repair done by us.

Will this fix be incorporated in units you ship in the future?

How much will it cost to have this done? And is it same to assume it
won't invalidate the warranty?

Thanks.

[slim] Re: RF interference in SB2's headphone output

2005-07-18 Thread ephemere

More information

I tried this again last night, and there is audible interference even
if the external antenna is removed. It's at a much lower level, but
still audible during quiet passages.

Also, with the external antenna installed, the interference gets louder
as the signal gets weaker. It's already audible at 100% signal
strength, but at 30% it's audible even during the loudest passages of
music.

Yes - you'll need to restart, then wipe and rescan.

It's imperative that the LC_CTYPE matches the file encoding of that when the
CDs were originally ripped. Thus, if you originally ripped and had no
LC_CTYPE, that may have defaulted to en_US.ISO-8859-1. Setting your LC_CTYPE
to en_US.utf8 won't be able to read those files then!

[slim] Re: Using the slimserver cli from perl

Actually, I already had done. My last posted attempt is a reworking of
that very script. :-) Have you ever tried printing $response? It
generally doesn't work for me. Don't waste any time on it though -
I'll have a closer look at things tomorrow.

You don't need $socket->autoflush (1); any more, by the way. From
cpan: As of VERSION 1.18 all IO::Socket objects have autoflush turned
on by default. This was not the case with earlier releases.

[slim] Translators: please update StringEditor plugin!

2005-07-18 Thread Michael Herger
Thanks to Robert's complete Czech SlimServer translation I became aware of
a problem in the upload part of the StringEditor.pm plugin. It would often
time out and cut-off large parts of the translated file.

Please update to the latest version 1.4 which fixes this major and some
minor problems:

http://www.herger.net/slim-plugins/detail.php?nr=461

And thanks to Robert's and Néstor's translation the plugin is now
available in English, German, Czech and Spanish :-)
