Hm OK.
In the comments area of that bug, Dean mentions CUE sheets as a
possible solution. How about a plugin (or whatever) that writes (or
rewrites if one is already present ) a CUE sheet on the fly with a
modified start and/or end time for the selected track(s)? SQ UI wise,
you would simply enter the new start and/or end times using the
keypad... the web interface could be fancier.

the Bookmark plugin is a way to save the current track with its current
time index intact. Mainly, this is for long audio books that you may
not play all in one sitting.

The Song Scanner plugin uses the BAR type input feedback, splitting the
current song into 100 parts so that you can have a very obvious UI
while you skip forward or backward to the specific place you want to
jump to in the playback.

Very cool. Now... if only you could save these
"bookmarked" start/stop times on a track by track basis, you'd have a
very

clever solution to Bug#731
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=731) while leveraging the
existing UI.

The way the bookmark plugin stores the time index would be prohibitive
to store track by track. If the desire was to mark a start and stop
for just the current track, and loop it (for something like learning a
phrase of a guitar solo), the scanner plugin might not need too much
work. however, I'm given the impression that this is not what that bug
is after, nor does it seem like a plugin would be accepted as a
solution.

This is intentional. They made Browse Music Folder really hideous in
order to make it really fast. It is faster, but since it's also
unusable to me now, I've had a net performance decrease, since I have
to go through other browsing methods, which are slower than Browse

There is no feature to hold scan until release.

pressing FWD or REW skips tracks.
press-and-hold goes into scan mode, 2X 4X 8X etc.
play, pause, or stop get you out of scanning mode.
pressing the FWD/REW for teh opposite direction of the curent scanning also
breaks out of scanning mode.

The above functions should be working with FLAC files for the SB2, and mp3/wav
for any Squeezebox

slimserver can't possibly correct for everything magically. give a chance at
finding out the cause, then its easier to determine what, if anything, needs to
be fixed in slimserver. Every fix begins with somebody having a problem that
can be reliably reproduced by those who can fix it. Every problem that has been
fixed along the way, including many that you have benefitted from is due to
other users who have helped provide details of the cause. This time, it looks
like it has to be your turn. Pity, yes, but the effort is appreciated.

It's a real pity, maybe I'm the only one with the "title (artist)"
problem, where only the artist is displayed on 80% of the tracks. (It
also seems random, on some CD's, 8 of the 10 songs have no title now,
but 2 seem fine, despite the CD being ripped in one go). I'll try and
see if I can find a pattern, but to be honest I would really rather
spend my time actually using this device for it's original purpose -
listening to music rather than debugging it.

If I bought a TV where some things worked only 20% of the time, it
would be a scandle.

I have a faster Windows XP machine (1.5mghz P4, 1gb RAM) and still get very
frustrated by the same problems you have (I have almost 800 albums held in
flac format). For me the 6*** SlimServer version is even slower than the
5.4.1 version. Listing music is frustratingly slow (although, oddly,
sometimes it's not!) and using the remote has become virtually impossible
(takes ages to do anything and the music stops playing whilst it drags
itself to perform any commands).
I love my Squeezebox but I'm definitely not very in love with Slimserver. My
feeling is that it does not work very well on Windows, although other XP
users state that it works fine for them which leaves me quite stumped,
and still (after almost a year) unable to be satisfied by the performance of
my Squeezebox/Slimserver combination.

I've just ordered a 3.2mghz PC and am hoping this sorts out my problems and
that Slimserver, for the first time since I have been running it, works as I
expect it to.

Hmmm. I had no problem downloading, but WinZip isn't able to open it.

I don't have playlists that refer to other playlists, however, I
believe I do have links that refer to other folders within the
library. Maybe that's my problem.

They will suffer a bit during rescan. It is a very CPU intensive process, in
order to get it done in as reasonable amount of time as is possible. Audio
playback is buffered and is considered higher priority over menu response,
especially during a scan. In fact, I'd even suggest there is a level of
argument in favour of blocking animation and remote control input during a
rescan.

No, no, no, it's wrong. This PC is one of the best accessible that I
ever seen. Open it with your hands, no tools required; there is a
sleigh that you can insert with the HD and the engineering of all the
parts is perfect (is made by HP is not a clone!). By other hand the
space is enough only for one HD and so forget to assemble a multi HD
raid solution.
Another solution can be the Compaq iPaq PC: a quite similar PC, small
as the HP e-pc but with integrated power supply (I don't ever hear how
much noise it produces).
I suggest this PC also for another use: running Skype.

Re: [slim] Should Library Scanning Bring Server to a Halt

2005-07-27 Thread kdf
Under normal circumstances, it should not overload the CPU for a night. I have
about 10,000 tracks and that takes about 15-20 minutes for a full rescan from a
cleared library. It depends on whether I'm running just a folder scan or
adding in iTunes and MusicMagic scans on top.

What can cause extended scan times are things like playlists that link to other
playlists, or shortcuts/links that point back to other locations within your
music folder. The former case is fixed in 6.2 nightlies, and should be into the
6.1.2 nightly in a day or two
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1826). The latter has not yet
seen an acceptably complete solution:

[slim] Should Library Scanning Bring Server to a Halt

2005-07-27 Thread Todd Fields
Scanning my library (about 40GBs of MP3s) has always taken
awhile with any version of SlimServer (since the SLIMP3 days.)
However, I've noticed that starting with version 6 (I'm
currently using 6.1.1), it now completely consumes my server's
resources. The PC acts as though it is locked up and my
Squeezebox displays a message that it's lost contact with
SlimServer. I usually just let it run overnight and eventually
it finishes the scan (not sure exactly how long it takes but it
is quite some time) and then everything operates fine. It's not
that big of deal as I don't rescan often and I just let it run
over night but I am just curious if this is normal behavior.

I'm running XP Pro on an Athlon 2100+ with 1GB RAM. The PC is
dedicated to SlimServer and runs nothing else other than
antivirus software.

your slimserver music library. Run Slimserver as the Administrator.
Rescan your library to pick it up. Run slimserver as a local user
under XP. Delete the shared directory, but not the shortcut. Browse
albums, or rescan.

I won't have time to recreate the problem. It's running fine now.
Hope it helps.

trunk

the trunk, after 6.1.1 release is back to experimental status.

Not a problem.

Ok, running from the command line with the suggested switches. Will
let you know what I see if it happens again.

Thanks. Also if you're running trunk - best if you report on the dev or beta
forums, as it will hit more relevant eyes that way.

Same problem with both LAN (Cable) and WLAN

Do you use the firewall on your slimserver machine? You'd need to open
ports 3483 & 9000. SliMP3 used imho only 3483.

Or did you block access to the server's web interface for some network
addresses (Server settings/Security)?

1. Nope, searching for known artists.
2. Under the Search Music section, I am using the "search music" link
which brings up a single text field where I enter what I'm looking for
(as opposed to using the "Advanced Search" in the same section).
3. Web interface = default. Browser: Crashes both with Mac OS X Safari

2005-07-27 Thread Paul Runyan

Thanks for all the very useful suggestions. I had thought that the Mac
mini would be a nice lightweight solution for a lightweight problem but
now even that seems like using a chainsaw to cut butter.

I hadn't come across the NSLU2 before or the posting in a previous
thread about before Josef's post. The idea of it really appeals to me.
>From reports it has no problem serving audio to one or two SB2s, but I
would guess that driving the web UI is were any speed problems would
really be noticable. I haven't heard anyone mention how responsive the
web UI running SlimServer on the NSLU2. It would be interesting to find
out.

[slim] Is there any software version that will actually work for me?

2005-07-27 Thread Justme

I love my squeezebox, but slimserver is simply driving me made. The
first version I downloaded hardly worked at all, and although new
releases have fixed some of the problems, they always introduce new
ones.

I currently have 6.1.1, and I upgraded from the previous version, as I
couldn't fast forward or rewind (If I did, it would just begin skipping
and jittering endlessly, even if I changed songs. The only way to fix it
was to restart my computer). There were plenty of other problems such as
slow response time for browsing etc, although this was imporved from the
previous version.

Now, how can one live without fastforward or rewind? When friends were
around, they would fall in love with the device and decide on the spot
to buy one, but changed their minds when they saw all the software
flaws (I tried to add a new track I just ripped, and it simply wouldn't
see it).

Now with 6.1.1 the fastforward/rewind is better, at least in the fact
that I don't have to restart my computer to stop the jittering. It's
still a problem as it doesn't actually fast forward through the song,
it just jitters when I press the button and then continues playing
after, but no further in the song.

Great.

But now my big peave is that the display simply won't see most of the
track names. This is driving me mad. All my mp3's have names and the
artist. In Slim server I have it set to display "Title (Artist)". This
worked in the previous version, but now about 80% of the tracks only
show the artist. It makes it impossible to bowse or search, and of
cause, on "show playing" it usually just has the artist name in
brackets with no song title before that. This has not only annoyed me
to endless lengths, but it has discouraged another two friends from
buying this device.

Has anyone seen this problem? Or is it just me.

Another problem with this new release is that it is so much slower than
the other. Yesterday a friend asked to hear a particular song from
Placebo. Great, normally this should be a 10second operation to begin
the song, but it took 10minutes for first the "browse artists" to list
the artists and a further 5minutes to scroll to the band in question,
then of cause with no song titles and three CD's to go through testing
each song, we just gave up and put the damn CD in.

I have a win XP PC, not the fastest at 1gig Anthlon, and 1gig RAM, but
hey, it works perfectly with hardcore photo editing software and
massive audio software, just not slimserver.

[slim] Re: sony PSP as remote

2005-07-27 Thread Milhouse

The latest version 2.00 PSP firmware (available today for Jap machines,
"soon" for US) includes a web browser (from NetFront) and it works very
well with Handheld (Fishbone is just about usable too).

Unfortunately Handheld suffers from the same "Browse Artwork" bug as
NetFront 3.2 on my iPaq - the first and second album artwork display
OK, then subsequent album artwork repeatedly overwrites the second
album image. A minor issue however, but would be nice to see fixed :)

Version 2.00 at long last includes WPA-PSK/TKIP which is working a
treat with my Linksys WRT54GS (running Alchemy firmware from Sveasoft
but should be fine with stock Linksys firmware also).

PSP firmware download details 'here'

However I think the 'Nokia 770'
(http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,1522,,00.html?orig=/770) would probably
make a better remote control - using the analog joystick on the PSP to
navigate along with the relatively small and low res screen means it's
sometimes a chore to find what you want - a larger screen with
touchscreen capability would be my ideal.

the trunk, after 6.1.1 release is back to experimental status.

try running it from command line, or editting the command line for the server
link to include the --logfile c:\mylog.txt argument. maybe add --d_plugins
--d_info --d_parse just for interest. there are some plugins that are

I'm also seeing SlimServer crashing on a very regular basis. Virtually
any time I come back to my server after a couple of hours I'll find
SlimServer no longer running.

Version was r3789, Perl source running on Windows XP Pro with SQLite.
Only the Date/Time plugin is enabled. The music directory is on a

local disk and I have no playlists, no cue sheets, no linked
directories.

The server crashes while idling - no music playing, no open browser
window pointed at the server. Nothing is being posted in the event
logs.

I've updated the installation to r3802.

Can you run slim.exe from a command prompt?

That way any output will be shown.

Thanks.
