[slim] "Now Playing" instead of title

2005-08-12 Thread Wallaby

Hi guys, this is my first post here since I took delivery of my SB2
about a week ago. The SB2 is great and and has surpassed my
expectations.

I've got a small issue and I'm not sure if it's something I've done or
whether it was the upgrade to Slimserver 6.1.2. Anyway, the SB2 display
is defaulting to the words "Now Playing" but before it used to display
the artist and title that was playing. I can change it to display the
artist and title with the keypad but it changes back to "Now Playing"
(presumably after a refresh). I'd obviously like it to display the
artist and title of the currently playing music - can anyone tell me
what I need to do to get the old display back

I'm sure there's an easy solution, so I'm sorry and thanks in advance.

regards from downunder

Scott

This is a good start - I even posted in the wrong forum:-O. Can an
administrator move this to the beginners forum - sorry.

[slim] Suggestion: Power Nap Plugin

2005-08-12 Thread MeSue

I thought this would be a neat plugin if someone wants to take it on.
Unfortunately, I don't have the skills to do it myself.

Power Nap plugin - sort of a combination of sleep timer and alarm
plugin.

In web UI, set up amount of time for sleep timer to run when Power Nap
is enabled (default of 15-20 minutes would be good) and amount of quiet
nap time before the alarm comes on. Also probably need to be able to
specify the wake-up volume and maybe a playlist.

When the plugin is activated, the current playlist starts playing for
the amount of time specified, then music fades out, and after the quiet
time, the alarm comes on.

Obviously I can do this by manually setting the current sleep timer and
alarm, but it would be cool to do it quickly by just setting Power Nap
ON or pressing a button on the remote.

[slim] Wanted To Buy: Squeezebox 1 Wired?

2005-08-12 Thread davejay

I still love my Squeezebox Wired, and in a few hours or days I will have
twins (a boy and a girl). Once they arrive, I thought it would be nice
to have a machine that can loop a playlist of whitenoise and whatnot in
their room, and of course thought "another Squeezebox" -- but since I
could technically accomplish the same thing with a CD player, spending
$200 is a bit hard to justify to my wife.

Anyone out there have a Squeezebox Wired they're looking to sell
(perhaps to partially finance their own purchase of a Squeezebox 2?)

[slim] 0 Songs

2005-08-12 Thread JSonnabend

I've written some code to populate slimserversql.db from an external
Access database. Everything works fine -- I'm able to browse artists,
albums, etc. and play music without problems. The only small hitch is
that Slimserver indicates:

"Your music library contains 1238 albums with 0 songs by 1966
artists."

I can't browse or search for songs, but the songs are all there when I

thanks, did some searches for firewire san and it seems like that's overkill
for me since i really never plan on connecting to the drive using more than

however, i found this infomative page about sharing firewire drives between

Does anyone have any experience with mediafour's MacDrive? i'm thinking i

Another option to experiment with is UDF. It is traditionally intended
for optical media, but it can be written to hard-disks as well. I know
at least for Linux such tools exist. I think you definitely have to
partition on the windows box.

Firewire also allows for more than one host at a time to talk to a
given device, you may be able to mount it on more than one machine
read-only, or even read-write on one machine.

Search for "firewire san" for more info on doing this.

SlimDevices has a master plan to fix all this. Python, Java? A tidy
C++ core maybe? I'm not holding my breath.

Like many of the people who have written on this thread, I have also
thought that separating the stream-serving and web-interface portions
of SlimServer into separate processes would help performance
dramatically. Over the last couple of years I've pretty much given
up using the web interface because of poor response, and very
frequently the device UI freezes for 10-100 seconds while trying to
navigate. I've just resigned myself to wandering away for a while
and coming back in a minute or two.

These are definitely problems that were once unnoticed, but have
grown as my library has grown, now at a large 120 GB / 25,000 tracks
on an admittedly aging 450 MHz single proc G3 Mac that's dedicated to
SlimServer. On one hand, I'd love it if my server was more robust,
on the other hand, I'm running two Slims from a 25K song library on a
7 year old computer with annoyances I've learned to live with.

I do sometimes renice the slimserver process down to -10 or -19 to
squeeze a little more out of it, but since it's a dedicated box it
doesn't do too much.

I've also noticed that some hooks for a mysql DB option are there
somewhere, yes? I've certainly considered switching to that in the
hopes I can squeeze some more performance out.

[slim] Softsqueeze flaky with Live365 streams, Squeeze Network sound streams

2005-08-12 Thread Bradley

Found a problem with Softsqueeze that causes it not to play a stream
even though it says it's "Now playing".

This seems to happen with virtually all Live365 streams as well as the
Squeeze Network's Natural Sounds. The problem does not happen with
RadioIO or Shoutcast.

There is a work around to get it to play -- clicking the pause button
once or twice (after you know the stream is already buffered), usually
will get the stream going.

I normally wouldn't notice this problem (I just moved and my
squeezeboxes are still packed), but I'm using Softsqueeze on my PC a
lot until I fully unpack and setup my SB's and stereos.

Anyway, I hope this can be fixed easily. I'm currently using
Softsqueeze 2.0b11 (but it also happened on 2.0-10

Dave,

I agree with you - the NSLU2 is a lot smaller an investment to worry
about when hacking firmware etc.

How are you finding the performance of your NSLU2? I've set one up and
the menu navigation from the SB2 is definitely slower than when I was
running Slimserver on OS X. After testing with a handful of albums,
I'm in the process of copying the rest of my music over (~1 songs).

Based on what people have said about rescan issues with Slimserver
6.1.1 I've opted for 6.0.2. Have you found rescans to be particularly
slow? I think tonight I'm going to crack the NSLU2 open and up the
processing speed - this I hope will have a positive impact on both
scans and menu navigation...

That should be fine.

Just make sure the iTunes Update history file is saved somewhere on the

No updates while the XP box is off indeed, but all you'll be missing is
updating of the iTunes smart playlists I guess.

This may mean that I have to rethink and rebuild the setup I've got.
The idea was to be able to run the SB2 from the server, without
depending on the itunes-box.

Ah.
You have to run the script on the machine with iTunes as it's going to
use COM to talk to it directly.

No, I'm running it on the same machine that runs Slimserver. All the
iTunes-data is stored there, but iTunes itself isn't installed on this
machine.

Arjen,
Are you running the script on the machine with iTunes installed?

[slim] itunes update error

2005-08-12 Thread arjengerstel

Hi,

I'm trying to get the itunesupdate plugin working.

My setup:
- W2K3 server running Slimserver 6.1.1 and iTunesUpdate 1.3.4
- Itunes runs on a Windows XP machine, but itunes library is stored on
the W2K3-server.
- Slimserver uses iTunes (works fine).
- iTunesUpdate Direct Updates are off.

The iTunesUpdate does write an itunes_hist.txt file, which looks
normal, as far as i can tell.

Running the updateituneswin.pl script produces the following messages
for each of the played files.

==logTrackToiTunesWin()
Attempting to make connection to iTunes...
Win32::OLE(0.1702) error 0x800401f3: "Invalid class string"
Win32::OLE(0.1702) error 0x800401f3: "Invalid class string"
Failed to launch iTunes through OLE!!!
Track not found in iTunes

Any ideas to get itunesupdate working would be greatly appreciated.

If you want easy you won't be using the remote to make and save large
playlists. Use the web interface.

As a new SB user, I'm astounded that this isn't standard behaviour. One
of the reasons for buying it was to make it easy to create a 'Party
playlist', a 'romantic playlist', a 'background music' playlist... etc
etc

Re: [slim] Slimp3 "initializing..." freeze up

hi. i have tried to figure this out in as many places as i can look

now i need HELP!

slimp3 is stuck on "initializing..." wether plugged into ethernet or
not. When i hold any key on remote and plug unit into power, i get
"Slim Devices Bootloder V." and that message just sits there.
nothing shows on the dhcp server.
i cannot get the mac address to show up either.

if you press and hold a button on the remote while you plug the power
back in, does it go into update mode?

can you then try to redo the firmware update
(even just reloading the same firmware you already have on there).

what server version have you been running, and what OS?
